I feel like they had their hands tied with brand identity. I also think that’s why they only made it in Coke Zero, so they could lean to that side of the brand and not infringe on Pepsi too much. Then they tied in that Coke Zero brand identity to the cookie packaging to not infringe on chips ahoy as you mentioned.
I disagree about the black packaging. I think it needs to stand out from the traditional blue oreo colors, without using Coke red, as that would take it too far from Oreo. That said, at quick glance...SEVERAL TIMES...in the grocery store, all i saw was a wristwatch on the label. And i was wondering if they had a promotion with a branded watch or something. I can now see that it's a bottle, but it still looks a lot more like a watch.
@@Boxitron Crazy how brands don't just ask normal people to state what they see first. I like to ask my mom or my kids, they're always honest and it's always surprising. Not that I take their advice but it helps get a new perspective on things. People see different things all the time.
Awesome format! It was great getting graphic & structure analysed. Can’t help feeling someone from marketing had a great idea then wanted to lead the design. But I’m sure you’re right that the brands involved probably got exactly what they wanted out of the campaign. Thanks both of you!
This probably could have been amazing, although the flavors were not. So maybe it's better that the design didn't sell more of it because that's a lot of unhappy customers.
Yo Adam! When you were talking about the tear off labels for shrink sleeves, what do you suggest companies do if there is a deposit return system? My local self-feed returner uses the UPC to see if the can has a deposit on it.
My advice for any young graduate would be to continue their education if possible and get a business degree as well. Designers have a shelf life and she’ll eventually have to run her own business.
As agencies are slowing down and so many creatives are being let go from brands there is an excess talent that’s not within agency that’s realizing they can specialize and earn as much or more doing freelance. Great stuff guys! @chriswilson5174 - Shout out to Matter Studio Bath, UK and @JamesCropperPaper-Packaging who worked to show how this was not just a concept but a nod to what is possible in the world of packaging design today :)
It's great that the Pact & other organisations exist to help nudge consumer behaviour. However, my experience is that there's a tiny number of consumers who care about the materials their packaging & product comes in so if designers aren't motivated to look into recycling for themselves there's no incentive for them to design better packaging. The question is how does the supply side get better educated.
Great question. Supply side has to want to get involved, but like you say the percentage of consumers that care enough to drive change is small. So we must tackle this in our own. For now. Discussions like this are a good starting point.
Love how Chris is happy working by himself & doesn’t feel pressure to grow by building an in house team. Great advice for people starting out & how teaching yourself can put you wherever you want to be.
It’s so true. With today’s hustle culture everyone feels like they’ve got to build bigger and bigger. But the reality is you can stay small and nimble enough to give yourself a happy life. Like he says we’re not in a race to have “was great at photoshop” on our tombstone. Life is about so much more than design.
Thanks for this video! Im studying to be a graphic designer and we need to create a packaging design for one of our projects. This helped me to understand the principles a bit better :)
@@packagingunboxd Im studying at North West University in South Africa, were doing a project to make a limited edition packaging design, I will propably check out more of your videos to help further in the project.
This was a great discussion, I have been feeling a lot of the same things you guys talked about here as a 41 year old designer! Thanks for doing this podcast!
We're all suffering in silence. No more! Old creatives unite! Anyone over 23 without 10 zillion followers an ice bath and 12 income streams is old these days.

it depends on what you want to do. If you want to start engineering packaging right out of school then yes. But having actual experience in the packaging industry, designing, manufacturing, and testing goes a long way. I never studied engineering at school, but through work I had my hands on manufacturing, material testing, and so many other opportunities that I've developed all types of packaging and built a long lasting career of it. Let me know what you're interested in doing, happy to help.
This video is from a year ago and shows you how to rename swatches to PMS colors and print correctly. There’s also a way today that you can import the Pantone books back in. I’ll be making that video soon.
