Hello, my name is ATSUSHI, and I am a physical therapist in Japan. I work at a national university hospital in Japan, primarily focusing on the rehabilitation of emergency patients. I understand that you, Kristen, are also a physical therapist, and I would like to exchange information about physical therapy practices overseas. I look forward to your response.
As a newly PTA grad who was fortunate enough to have well-rounded clinical experiences, I would suggest a student shadow a PT and a PTA at various clinical settings because the jobs vary immensely. At my inpatient rotation, the PTs were mostly typing all day and the PTAs were treating. This clinic had more PTAs than PTs. In outpatient, depending on the setting, PTs were able to be more involved in some treatments. In acute care, my rotation included a PTA and a PT as my CIs and the PTs’ job was immensely boring IMO. They repeated the same phrases day in and day out and just asked a bunch of questions. They rarely performed any treatments. I did work in a level 1 trauma unit so we were always busy. It may be different in other acute care settings. I only worked ortho, neuro, and trauma. I’m sure the cardiac floor was much different but still a lot of repetition. If that doesn’t bore you to death like it did me, then that might be good. Each person has different interests and all are needed. It’s often that one will go into school thinking they will work in a specific setting until they go on clinicals and learn more detail of certain pathologies and their treatments. I thought I wanted to work outpatient but I fell in love with neuro. The best thing is to know your learning style and interests and then pay attention to what interests you in school. I can’t emphasize shadowing/observation in multiple settings before applying to PT or PTA school. Plus, the bridge program is there for those who decide to expand their degree. I think the only reason I would pursue the bridge program is if I ever wanted to own my own clinic. Otherwise, I love the direct patient care I can give as a PTA and the leadership and guidance I can get from a great PT.
I feel like it doesn’t help me rewriting everything from a PPT on notability. It results in a huge amount of time spent on a passive approach, which I could be doing active study instead
Is physiotherapy a family oriented job I mean do we have to work long hours How much hours In a DAy do you work? After a bachelor degree do you think i can get a decent job?? Thanku so much for the video ❤
Hey Kristen! Love from India♥️♥️ I have a question that can we put the prefix Dr in front of the name and also can pt get a white coat ceremony during this coarse??
hello kristen, im currently doing my 2nd year in bpt and im from India. I’m looking forward for pursuing my masters from abroad. Could you please brief me about the exams and how can I apply? Thank you <3
What did your day to day look like in terms of studying? Like if there is a day when you have a couple pages of reading but no lecture, what did you do the rest of the day? I am starting at the beginning but am feeling like I am not filling up my hours of studying with just the reading or the lecture if there is one.
I would follow the study plan whether that be the lecture or readings for the day! then I would cross reference with my scorebuilders book to see if there was anything additional to review about the topic the FF content was talking about if that makes sense. hope this helps!
I have been getting left knee pain then the PTA I have been working with evaluated my knee and diagnosed it as patellar tendinitis then gave some exercises to do but left me alone the whole time. I was wondering if a PTA is even qualified to do this evaluation on his own ?
Great job on this! I’m a DPT and own a practice, and I would tell any young person NOT to enter this field. I do ok, but it is a constant battle to be paid. I only stay afloat because most of my patients pay cash because I am specialized in vestibular rehab. If you are not specialized( which takes extra time in school and lots of money) expect to be paid less than your nurse friends….or find a wealthy spouse😅
Everyone should have to watch this before applying to PT school. I’m introverted and didn’t understand just how people-facing the profession is until I started doing clinicals. It’s negatively affected my mental health and I don’t see it changing until I figure out an exit strategy. For now I work in acute care. I can go hide in a stairwell for 10 minutes whenever I need to! It’s sustainable-ish for me for now.
@@jimnguyen6337 Do you not understand what "introvert" means? Lol. As a personal trainer and potential future physical therapist who's also an introvert, I love interacting with people but it can be overstimulating and exhausting to do it for hours a day. I still love it but can see how it would wear someone out.
I am sorry to hear about your mental health declining. I suggest you consider teaching at some point and look for an online program. This often has less personal interaction until intensives. You can also conduct clinical research if you find an area that you are passionate about. I rarely reply, but your comments are profound and I hope you find peace soon. Your wellness and health are paramount!
overall, yes! I don't think I realized emotionally how tough it can be to deal with people and be "on" every second of the work day, but in the end I don't regret my decision and love my job :)
I’m a PT student right now thinking about going into pelvic health, I would love to hear your experience on everything pelvic health as a student! Going through your level 1 lab, figuring out if you wanted to do a residency, etc! 🙂
DPT's should be respected way more. I've bn to therapy twice, i must say the pt helped me out a lot more than the Dr. Did. He just prescribed me useless ibuprofen. The PT & PTA's actually helped me recover. With that said, i dont think this career field is worth it, unless you go PTA. its 2 years total, less than 10k, and decent pay in my area and the home health jobs are awesome (seems that way anyway). Im shooting for the PTA program this year.
It can be a helpful way to gauge strengths/weaknesses and a starting point! but also FF builds several practices exams into the study outline and says when to take them😊
Congratulations Kristen, I'm excited for you and your future as a DPT. I am adding this again from another of your blogs because this one pertains directly to salary so: For all of you DPT majors, being a very close friend to a PTs for years, it is very possible to make as much as other Doctorial professions in the medical field and even more, if and when you decide to own your own practice! I would advise working for some years under and with other DPT professional before ever branching out, but it is an excellent goal to strive for.
Thank you Kristen for all of your insight into becoming a DPT. I'm confused on which route to take. I have a BS in Biology but a low GPA. I thought about trying to get into the DPT program and had several virtual meetings with schools. I then thought that going to the PTA program would be shorter and I'll be working in the field sooner than going to DPT. I work in the emergency department (17yrs) and I"m tired of the flow. I managed to get 20 hours of shadowing a PT in the hospital that I work at (that's the limit which they offer). I'm gonna try to shadow at an outpatient location and then a nursing rehab. I'm trying to get into a different field because my heart is no longer in the ER. I started to work on the PTCAS but need to take the GRE and pay for the applications. I hope to get into a program this year.
Thank you for sharing this info! I'm a 3rd year DPT student & just took the PEAT. Planning on taking the NPTE in April and am starting to really plan and schedule my time for it. I think I might actually opt to sign up for final frontier!
