Why don’t you stack the two cants and get two 1/6 at a time?
@AlexQuintonHerringHimself
@AlexQuintonHerringHimself 7 месяцев назад
Cuz they heavy
@realhardwork
@realhardwork 3 месяца назад
Also cuz doggin down two cants on top of one another gets more and more dangerous and unstable as you take more width off of them.

Question, I have a few (4 total) bits seized up on my blade. I’ve tried Blaster soaking, heating with small touch, and soaking in diesel fuel with no luck. Do you have any suggestions on how to un-seize these saw bits. Any help is appreciated! Thanks
@AlexQuintonHerringHimself
@AlexQuintonHerringHimself 9 месяцев назад
Try wire brushing any rust or old saw dust from the cracks around the shank and bit and spray with WD40. After it soaks you still might have to wedge the blade where it won't move and tap the bit wrench with a wood mallet.

Just a tip but you don’t have to jab the can’t hook into the log…a simple snappy pull up will set it in just fine, but jamming it in will work too.

Been there and did that. I would like a closer look at your power unit. Is it a 471 Detroit? Or smaller?
@AlexQuintonHerringHimself
@AlexQuintonHerringHimself 10 месяцев назад
Yes, it's a 4-71 GM Detroit Diesel. I'll have to get a video with an engine overview at some point.

We have my father's 1922 Farquhar mill. We're lengthening the track to 60', and the carriage to 20', and adding another headblock. I've sawn 20' lumber, but the ends chatter when it gets narrow. With the new setup, I'll be able to saw 24' lumber with no problem, maybe longer for beams. Powered by a 1936 Caterpillar D13000, set on fast idle at 800rpm. Love the old mills.

Saw another sawyer using the RENS model P-4000 metal detector. If you loose a saw plate, it will be worth the money. Also was reading a comment that when he was a kid, the sawyer hit something and the that half moon part of the sawtooth ended up in his leg.

~150-160 hp when engine ran at ~1600 rpm puts the saw plate running at ~500-550 rpm.

Why not?? He's wearing the proper PPE. Ears, eyes, face, head and hands are all protected. He's even wearing boots. What were you expecting, a suit of armor? lol As for the machine, it predates modern safety regulations. It's a lot like vehicles predating seat belts, if it wasn't manufactured with it, it's not required to have it today. Personally, I think he's a bit overkill on the PPE. But hey, to each their own. lol

I did that same walk back and forth this past weekend cutting 20 ft 2x6s by myself. I know 2,000 ft ain't too much to brag on but it'll make for a long day sawing by yourself. Thanks for sharing with us and I'll look forward to seeing the next one.

Damn! hit the wrong button! When we were both broke, stationed in North Carolina, Cat would stand on the barracks porch and sing “Earnestly tenderly Jesus is calling, calling for you and for me 🎶 Guys would throw change at us, I would pick it up while Cat sang, and usually we would get enough to go over to the slop chute and have us a cheeseburger and a Coke! He had a great voice 😎Thanks for the memories!
