Hi everyone, not much to tell really, but I'm just an old soul who is out of step with the rest of the world, with my passion for old oil lanterns, old cars and appliances of the 19th and 20th century. Just good honest fun, information on care, restoration and what to look for, when shopping for an antique or vintage kerosene lantern!
Hey Rob, very cool that you got to go to the photo shoot! And get up in the cab! What a great experience. We went out and paid a visit on Sunday; every time she comes out I try to get out see her. As far as your feelings about her go, yeah, I totally get it. Totally get it. Thanks for putting this video up!
I went through the Freedom Train when I was about 4years old!!!! It was at Forbes Field in Topeka Ks. UP 4014 is going to be in Hays Ks next month, about 23 miles away from me!
Thanks Rob. In our current time when people are rushed you have a way of bringing us back. So happy for you. I know the feeling my grandfather was a brakeman for southern railway late 30's through the war. He would tell us kids the train stories, they are priceless.
Great content as usual, Rob. Winfield made some interesting lanterns. I don't have a Winfield cold blast yet,but hopefully, being in Ohio, I will get lucky eventually. I have a Winfield hot blast called PEARL. I have not found very much information on this lantern.
Just picked up a really nice untouched Dietz No 0 HY-LO...😁😁😁 on Bay From 1913 to 1920 the Hy-Lo lantern had un-reinforced, (smooth,) round tubes. I will check date out when it gets here...
Great video .. globes and lanterns super nice. Delivery on my B day next week ..4 more WT kirkman globes ..2 tubular hot blast and two no 2 globes ..w.t kirkmans Amber's are real nice
Reading the title reminded me of how the convex shape of the globe is manufactured in that shape to work as a magnification glass for enlarging the flame to amplify the actual light output. Recently playing with this principle, I've learned that I can take a hand held magnifying glass and hold it in front of the globe and direct concentrated light as well as a modern day electric flashlight, for looking down dark hallways or dark corners. I'm a well read person, my mother was a college technical librarian and I am presuming this knowledge has not been published, because I've never read about this method being used. Recently I was able to utilize it while camping to shine a fixed spotlight down a dark trail going to another part of my camp so I did not have to carry a light in my hands to see my way in the dark. Because I discovered this method on my own, I wanted to share it for what it's worth.
I’ve only recently come upon your channel and I much appreciate your content in these posts. I like the friendly way you engage the camera, it’s as if you’re sharing time with a friend in a most comfortable way and with all the hubbub of this political season, I like to just kick back and enjoy your conversation. I have only just gotten the lantern bug, really only in the last two weeks, and have purchased three lanterns. My wife, we will celebrate our 51 wedding anniversary next week, just rolls her eyes and says “… what! another collection!!!” I collect OTR, yeah I saw your video with April, wind up Victoria’s, also Edison cylinder players, stereograph photos and a whole lot of other “stuff”. I like to live in our present day world but find recreation in previous decades. BTW, I was moved to make this post as just last week a 97 year old dear friend of ours was called home. He was a naval veteran of WW2 and Korea. We were in the VFW together and he had some swell stories. As he would tell them, he would inevitably become teary eyed thinking about someone who left us too soon. Anyway, wanted to let you know how much I appreciate and enjoy your videos…keep em’ coming!
Just found your channel great content. Just inherited a Rayo hot blast No.75 struggling to find a wick size… my lantern works good and is good shape but need to replace wick. Any info is very helpful thanks.
Great video brother. Thank you for sharing. Your knowledge and expertise I have an opportunity to buy a dietz number #3 Pioneer The street lamp for $600. It has been reconditioned.Should I get it
I understand your desire to travel after dark with the non-airconditioned Dodge. I have a personal policy that any of my cars which have a broken A/C get parked until it is fixed! That is a very nice lantern. Interesting story about it, as well. As with most commercial, institutional things - I expect those were used on the job until they were 'used up' and not worth selling once they were outmoded. I bet they were so used up that they were just tossed. That is probably why so few are left. That is funny about the cork coming out of your whisky bottle. I expect in this weather it would be best to keep that inside the Monitor Top as opposed to on top of it LOL!
great story rob. my brother, who lives in Sunnyvale met his wife in a ballroom dancing class in the 90's. they just shipped their youngest off to college.
That is a really nice pre world war 2 Dietz comet from the 1930’s you have there! 👍 Yup I have a pair of post war version of the Dietz comet with the rising cone burners in each!👍 Great little lanterns to use when I go camping!🙂🙂
That patch corner !!!!! I have a few lanterns that don't like the Fitall size.. either taller or shorter... I have a Defiance tall globe #2 and a squat globe #2 ... It's a great duo. I find squat are better to carry as less light goes upward.. both are bright!!
Hello from romulus Michigan brother thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise and for taking us on your adventures through the dark with lantern light
