Hey everyone! I'm a 51 year old brown belt under Mike Codella (4th degree Renzo Gracie black belt). I began training martial arts with TKD in 1985. I went on to train Shaolin kung fu and Wing chun beginning in 1999. I began BJJ/kickboxing and MMA in 2008. I earned my purple under Marcelo Garcia in 2017 followed by my brown belt at Codella academy in 2023. This channel focuses on roll narrations infused with small gems of wisdom accumulated over decades of martial arts training. This is with the hope that practitioners will find useful information, to help add value, safety and a more open minded perspective to their BJJ journey.
As someone who just started it's hard to understand what it means to slow down I feel like I was trying to hard and then go to not doing anything still searching for that in between because last time the guy puts me in a triangle the first 30 sec if I slow down😂
You know you have your hands full when you start hearing that guttural grunting. It’s good to do these rolls to test yourself but I can’t say I enjoy them. I tend to only teach the ones who aren’t so full of piss and vinegar though. 53 year old a purple here.
I didn’t enjoy them until recently since I have more skill to handle them. As you said it’s a necessary evil. We need to know how to handle the untrained and athletic. Thank you for tuning in. Stay safe
@@Jitsover50 check out the lapel handcuff I posted. I caught a 25 year old in a comp in it last week. That is why I posted it bc he asked me to tell him what happened.
@@gruntlifex03x69 Started this year as well and turning 44 this month. The conditioning from it is helping relieve a lot of back and neck pain I've had, otherwise it's causing a lot of finger pain and my ego is dead on the side of the mats somewhere :D
I’m at a no-gi gym and I’m a 43 year old white belt with garbage cardio and no other redeeming attributes except the fact that I like bjj. But yeah, that’s what I look like after about 2-3 minutes of going live: drenched in sweat, breathing heavily and about ready to puke 😂 The higher level guys at the gym (basically everyone there) just let me cook and then tap me. I think a combination of the maturity and physical decline that comes with age has taught me to slow down pretty quickly.
@@lvn4x the fact that you like and one day May love bjj is what will get your through. I have no great attributes either. My love for it forces me to seek out the answers in framing and timing. I wish you an injury free journey
One of the biggest mistakes that jiujitsu clubs make is having white belts spar. I'm sorry, but in my experience it's counterproductive. It increases the risk of injury to themselves and the person they're sparring with. And they don't really learn the technique properly.
Stripes don't mean much. Now that I have been practicing BJJ for 6 years, it is amazing how easily it is to see people rolling and just by how they move, you can clearly tell if they are a white, blue, purple belt etc.
When you’re talking about standing up and fighting the legs instead of wrists, that is definitely my game, and I like to try to go up the centre as opposed to running around the guard. However against some of my training partners, especially when training gi, they grip my sleeves and kick me out with their feet. It’s a problem I’m working on as a 12 month white belt. Any vids on that specific problem J.O.50?
@@Jitsover50 they tend to hook their feet behind my heel near the achilles and send me backwards. I’m working em out slowly. Thanks for the videos mate, I’ll buy you a coffee. Appreciate your content 🥋🤙🎸
an analogy my professor shared with us at the end of a class yesterday that i think you'll like: "White belt is when you learn how to woodwork. blue belt is when you build your boat, purple belt is when you are pushed out / set sail into the ocean for the first time, brown belt is when you reach the other shore. black belt is when you choose to go back into the ocean again."
That's interesting. I always say "a blue belt knows jiu-jitsu". A purple belt has sneaky, athletic, explosive jiu-jitsu. A brown belt no longer has to be sneaky, athletic or explosive. A black belt can almost call the sub very casually."
@@Jitsover50 Agreed - i guess that translates to something like: "a blue belt knows how to build the boat, a purple belt can athletically row it, a brown belt is able to use the efficient technique to gain the same distance and a black belt is able to raise the sails and harness the wind."
Thanks for your positive commentary. Actually just exploring different gripping ideas and trying to not smash pass as much, which is my stronger suite. How about this- lets bet $20 if you can pass Jits over gaurd in 5min or less?
Just went to class and tried your tripode sweep like 5 times and it worked wonders lol, felt a very big satisfaction from it, now I understand why you use it so often, col vid as always!
I’m a former judoka rather than juijitsu but obviously there are so many similarities. I love seeing this kind of randoori where the more experienced player will allow their opponent to succeed when appropriate. It’s a proper learning experience for everyone. Really nice to see
I was quite impressed with Big Rhino there. For a white belt, he’s a good solid competitor, he was trying to use his legs and hips to get back position. Obviously needs to work on conserving energy and building into the round more steadily. Good job cooking him though my man, well executed round.
Thank you. He is a big drink of water. ha. Yes he has a good style and will bloom into a proficient player one day soon. A proficient practitioner is a blue belt in my eyes btw.
The black belt needs to go for other submissions against you. He is just spamming footlocks and is very one-dimensional. The fact he is a higher belt rank than you and isn't going for other submissions is pretty wack. It's like, "OK, DUDE, WE GET IT. YOU LIKE FOOTLOCKS AND I CAN'T DEFEND THEM THAT WELL. MOVE ON TO SOMETHING AND BE VERSATILE...".
A pass requires a pin of the far shoulder with control. Bummed I was competing today in Orlando but the plane had a failed engine so I spent a day waiting in the airport.
@@Jitsover50 yes very similar. I hate it too but just want to compete. Come down to train with us and do some footlocks. You will get lots of footage 🤣
Terrific video again thanks a lot. Your rolls with Funny Joe are always really educational and I appreciated the emphasis on not wasting energy for moves that aren't worth it, as a spazzy white belt these are the kinds of things I'm trying to remediate so I stop blowing out my limbs on moves that won't work or just don't give much value.
