Welcome to the Free Range Art Farm! We keep bees, goats, and ducks on our little 10 acre farm.
I'm Thomas a 50 plus software engineer who loves to work with his hands. My wife Lulu is the artist. She and I live on a bit over 10 acres in Northern Virginia. We have a dog, a cat, 10 ducks, and a couple of Nigerian Dwarf Goats. We moved to the country in the fall of 2018 and are slowly building out our homestead. We are also potters and I like work on and restore old cars.

Khung dòng chảy này sẽ tiết kiệm được nhiều thời gian của người nuôi quy mô nhỏ nhưng nếu quy mô lớn thì hơi bất tiện tại phải mang hộp đựng mật đến từng tổ ong
Could’ve taken a piece of material like what your B hood has, and rubber band it around the top of your jug, and the honey with a dripped through the material into your jug
Hey, thanks for reaching out. No, I've been busy with lots of other projects. I'm still keeping the bees, but everything takes three times longer when filming and I just haven't been bringing the camera out. All is going well for the most part in the apiary. Pulled some frames the other day in 95F weather. No fun at all.
@@FreeRangeArtFarm life is busy please take your camera out even if they are short videos. Had a couple of issues with ours, had to requeen a few, awful weather has had a huge impact, no spring harvest which seems to be common in the UK due to adverse weather. Beekeepers have had to feed for fear of starvation which is rare this time of year. Hoping for a summer harvest but really the survival of the colonies is the most important
When I assemble a double nuc, I've started using 3/8" plywood for the center divider. It allows more room for 5 frames on each side. Still 4 up top of course.
Hives look to be in shade and woodland... perfect for ants and hive beetles. Hive looks slimed as well. Hope all those issues don't move next store. Freeze those frames for two days before adding to any other bees otherwise you are just transferring hive beetles and HB larvae to the new hive. Good luck with the next one.
Wow look at the ants! Those things happen. Always an opportunity to learn. Maybe the bees absconded prior to the ants arrival or maybe the ants ran them off. No worries. Thanks for sharing!
Ya, I was shocked by the amount of ants. This location is fairly new to me. I moved bees in last June and lost both colonies in the fall. Then moved these girls in the other day. It's funny how different it is being in a forest vs. just under trees in my field. This location is barely 1/2 mile from my main apiary and I have to manage them quite differently.
I try to keep the hives in the sun to keep the hive beetles down. As for the ants I always carry my torch to roast them suckers. I also put ground cinnamon on the inner covers to keep them out. Thanks Thomas!
Well done. great job managing the swarms and explaining what you were doing! Only thing I might suggest is to orient the comb in the same direction it came out of the trap. Hopefully the first one ends up with a queen. That second one I think is going to explode!!!
Great video, thoroughly enjoyed. We have gone queen right hives coming out of winter. Show start as weather has been diabolical in Wales. All on a double brood, that's a first for us so hopefully this year will be a success
It's best to shake off the frames into your box to remove all the bees before removing the comb, you took a chance of killing bees and most important your queen. Hope this helps .
@@FreeRangeArtFarm They will probably raise the brood but the angle of the cells is not correct so they won’t store anything in it. That’s what I’ve noticed if I put it in wrong. Thanks Thomas!
What are your thoughts about that comb in the future? Do you think the girls will tear it down and adjust the angle or will it be useless comb? I'm thinking they will fix it. It will be interesting to see how they handle it moving forward.
@@FreeRangeArtFarm Put it in upright the first time. Problem with newly drawn comb is that it tends to bee too soft for framing. It even looked like you had some queen cups started on one piece. Keep us posted as to what happens.
That disk doesn't seal well. Rotating it would work if it were in better condition. I taped it to make sure to block all the openings that the bees could escape through.
Lol... ya, the disk was drilled out so, none of the positions allowed for ventilation while containing the bees. I need to replace that one. Get those traps up. We are having a very active swarm season.
you don't have it ran properly for bears, the middle top wire needs to be ground....plus 2 mile charger is not strong enough for bear you need a 30 mile charger
I watch a bunch of beekeeping videos and some cameras actually attract bees and they are not happy. One guy switched cameras, two different reactions, why? Who knows.
I'm in Va. I've had a bunch of scouts checking out my swarm traps, but no takers yet. Keeping fingers crossed 🤞Thanks for sharing. What an amazing sight 😯🥰🐝
Can I assume that you live in or near Fairfax? We are near Warrenton, so basically your area. You should get something soon. Swarms are happening for sure. This is the second time we've been able to watch them move in. It's always an amazing experience.
