I really like the wood on the tailgate..been meaning to do the same thing. Those plastic ones they make that are hella expensive are slippery asf when they are damp or wet…WOOD is a much better option!
hey bro nice job i am going to follow what you did but ill be doing it on a vigo hilux ,also what color is you pickup painted in ,is it a factory color or custom ,am looking for a paint just like that, thank you
Not to be a criticism, but rather a clarification; please correct me if I'm wrong. I think you meant to say "I sleep [diagonally]" (not "vertically" -- otherwise you'd be sleeping standing up). And, while you're positioned diagonally, you're horizontal. Hey, I flunked algebra, so I'm not perfect. Sweet build, none-the-less.
Not sure if you’ll see this since the vid has been out a while, but would love to know if the main 1/2” board is one solid piece or 2 with the carpet stretching across for a single appearance? If the main deck board is 1, how did you get it in and still sit under the lip on the sides? Please and thank you.
I’m sure you have to sleep diagonally in that 5’ bed. I chose the long bed (6’) when I was looking for my 23 TRD Off Road, double cab with the premium and technology pkgs.
Super helpful man, thanks for sharing! I’ll be copying this on my taco now. I think I might add a piece of angle iron between my bed stiffeners to support the front lip of the plywood. Just a bolt on each side so still super easy to take out when I want the full bed.
I'm 6-2 and sleep in mine quite comfortably.. the secret is to have a passenger seat that folds flat.. makes a 74" bed, inside! You need the storage platform to be the same height. The other point, the sound bar is annoyingly low for turning over or moving about when the sleeping platform is that high.
Awesome video. I ripped my stock bumper off the other day on the trail. Im getting ready to build one and trying to decide on thickness. Are you happy with the 14ga? Or would you go thicker if you were to do it again?
We no longer have it as we traded in that jeep. But, I can say for the time we did it helped on about 4 or 5 recoveries. It never skipped a beat great winch for the price! If you’re on the fence I’d say run it🤙🏽
At the time it was still hard to get curtain materials sourced at my local metal supply shop so this was the best I was able to get. Fortunately it’s held up great even being drug across rocks🤙🏽
Really nice setup, especially as a budget option. I really dig it. Something that occurs to me is a couple simple hinges, about a foot of plywood cut to bed-width, and about three stubs of wood- you’d have a full length bed for two. I would probably want to splurge for fiberglass but your setup has a lot of appeal. I’d be interested to see how it would work with the “tent extension” things that can go on the back to give 6’ of room. I like the 5’ bed for the shorter wheelbase but I want more sleeping room.

Man with my 22 Tacoma 5ft bed, I thought it was gonna be impossible to sleep in my short bed. Your video is great and I will mimic this idea once my camper shell arrives. How is sleeping back there?
