The first time I sloped a sailplane was a day I’ll never forget. It scratched a lifetime itch I didn’t know I had.. It fulfilled all of my childhood conceptions of soaring an airplane. Your video is perfect, not intimidating, explains the basics. I’m in central California in a place called Seacliff so to not take advantage of all that free and clean ocean breeze would be silly. I used to walk my 3 toddlers to the beach, launch the plane and soar for hours while picnicking.

My reading tells me from the old Technisub Jaguar Piccolo manual to use Technisub lubricant and if that is not available use S.A.E 30 weight motor oil, 25cc worth to keep all things lubricated. Modern Nitrile or Viton o-rings are petroleum impervious and just a side note on pneumatic's, they are based on hydraulic rams such as dozers, tractors, back hoes etc.... Instead of a hydraulic pump, fluids cannot be compressed, only moved. It uses compressed air filling one chamber to to displacement of the spear mass in the other with oil behind it lubricating the piston and barrel yet at the same time the film is microscopically thin. The piston seals wipe the barrel or air tube squeaky clean on both the air side and the water/spear shaft side. , so if any eco-perverts need to pinch that, either pack up and go home or go to a traditional band gun, nature itself has more natural, not man-made, bio-contaminants than that micro film of petroleum lubricity. Hydrogen sulfide being released into the atmosphere from the rotting garbage you throw into the landfill every week might be one of those including the exhaust emissions from your house furnace and car put up into the atmosphere. Leave it alone, anything green and growing will take care of it. Exxon Valdez - Prince William Sound are you kidding me?

Hi I have the same glider and i was wondering what modification you did on the wings?😊
@PaulGarbettNZ
@PaulGarbettNZ 6 месяцев назад
Just taped on some foam-board as an extension for the ailerons. You could use cardboard or something similar. Gives the glider a bit more control. This one is a bit unresponsive until going fast.

Hi Paul! Indeed you have plenty of great places! A lot of height and wind! And spectacular views. Thanks for this tips also. Landing seems to be the masterpiece of soaring. With public it seems to gets even more difficult, but you are a master :) I have heard about the motor/propeller brake from colleagues on the airfield on motored planes but did not believe that. It seems to work on gliders where with motor off the prop is folded back and it´s more aerodynamic then turning it on 1%. But I suppose (if possible) flaperons, spoilers, or crow or a combination would slow it much faster down. Now I have some fears about that turbulence sections behind too... But until I go really slope soaring it will be enough time I think... I have bought a couple of gliders. One is a FlyFly Fox 3000mm without motor. I have seen a guy on RU-vid flying her pretty nice on a gentle small beach dune in Denmark. But probably that is masterclass too. So better I put a motor there just in case. Also it need a lot of ballast without one. I was thinking of being towed by a motor plane on our airfield. But that place is difficult to fly. Just flat and around many trees and forests. So there is almost just one landing attempt when unpowered... xD
@PaulGarbettNZ
@PaulGarbettNZ 8 месяцев назад
Hi. Thanks for your comments. Yeah planning the landing really is the tricky part. There are a lot of cliffs around here that are suitable, but less where you can land. Landing down in front in the wind is desirable if possible, but otherwise you just have to do the best you can in the bumpy air up top. Sometimes if you stand in the wind you can catch it as it comes past - i've had to do this a few times as well. But its easier if you have a friend who can catch it. I've thought of having a trailing piece of string to act as a sort of arrested hook i can catch on the way past but still working on it.
@ficosk8
@ficosk8 8 месяцев назад
Hi @@PaulGarbettNZ ! Your channel is cool but I´ll try to not watched more videos since I get wanderlust or homesick (Chile)... That thing with the hook would be fun :P I have seen drones that can land on strings... To have a friend with to free hands would be the best :D I´m thinking to buy a smaller 2m wingspann speedglider for the slopes. I found a guy in my town who gave me an idea where to go nearby. It´s a place I´ve go up with my mountainbike many times but I haven´t think of... Cheers to NZ!

Hi Paul, Your videos have got me into spearing with the Pneumatics, Thank you! I am confused about my guns with my Salvimar power regulators. I have a 100cm Darkside as well as 100cm Predathor plus. But i am only 5'9" and it has been a real chore to load them. I do it but it is NOT EASY! So can i load my guns in reduced power then switch to high power for a high powered shot?> Then when there is no spear in the gun can i switch again to low power and repeat without any damage? I am confused.....
@giicllc8819
@giicllc8819 Год назад
Paul i just experimented with 2 pull handles attached with a string to one another. IT WAS A GAME CHANGER!! I can esaily load the 100cm now, no issues. I saw a video short Salvimar video on the idea, in the video he had 4 handles to a string, all i needed was 2, Totally Enjoyed spearing today with the 2 mode Handle!!

@PaulGarbettNZ Год назад
Yes you can load at low power. Usually these guns have a one-way valve for low power. You can load it in multiple stages, over multiple pumps of the spear. Eg you push the spear in half way then relax. Next time it will be easier as you have stored that energy. Or rather, the gas goes through the valve and stays there. Next pump will be easy to about half way, then push a little further to 3/4. A third pump will be easy to 3/4 then one final push to click the spear in. You can then switch to full power. Or back for half power. Alternatively, you can load on the land with full power by using the ground as support. Then shoot on low power, where it is easy to reload again in the water.

Hi , nice review! Have you shot any solid kingies with it? I live up in Kerikeri and am considering the 99 cm model for kingies, what do you recommend? Cheers
@PaulGarbettNZ
@PaulGarbettNZ Год назад
I would recommend it yes. Good range for those bigger fish which don't swim that close to you. Try and shoot them in the head so they wont drag you around. You can put 30-50m braid on the reel which helps.

Hi Paul, It has been a while since we talked. What did you use to make your extensions on your elevator and ailerons? Hope all is well with you over there in a land far away Daniel USA
@PaulGarbettNZ
@PaulGarbettNZ Год назад
Just foam board. It is quite expensive over here. Like $10 a sheet. We really are spoilt for choices of where you can slope soar here. I was at a cliff recently with this big glider, and at one point it just kept going up and i couldn't fly down faster than the wind was pushing it up. I didn't want to go too fast because it might rip the wings off. And every time it came down it speed up so much that it ballooned up again. It was getting about 150m above me and i actually thought i might loose it to the heavens. So i just had to dive straight down at hundreds of km per hour speed and risk it all. Finally i got it out over the ocean and levelled off very slowly to not exceed the G limit and i recovered. there were birds taking the thermal hundreds of meters up into the clouds.
