I love the fact that your son is interested in the genealogical aspect of the property. It doesn't seem like many of the younger generation have that interest.
I think those other flowers are irises. They're gorgeous. A lot of old places have lilies and irises. They are both beautiful! Thanks for sharing your journey.
I wish you much success in your journey of restoring your family's homeplace. It must be so exciting. I'm not in Virginia. I"m in West Virginia. My family's roots run deep here, too. Of course, we were once part of Virginia. My family is mainly from Summers and Monroe county. I found out a few years ago that my roots go back here a very long way. There are two of my family's working farms on display in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. I had no idea I was even related to the people that owned the farms. I am their direct descendant. It's so cool finding information like this out. I love being in touch with my family's roots. I love learning about their personalities, what was important to them, etc. I felt a connection to my ancestors when I was standing on land that one of the farms was situated on. My cousin and I both felt that attachment. We felt so at peace. I like hearing about other people's journeys to find their roots. So fascinating. I hope you are able to recover fully and quickly from your injuries.
Found your channel through Facebook. I love what y’all are doing here! My roots run deep in Southside, VA, mainly along the Mecklenburg-Brunswick county line. Looking forward to following along with y’all on your journey.
Glad you're well enough to make another video. Did you have the surgery yet? Please let us know when we can come help get that porch away so the threshold can be fixed!
Fascinated with the cemetery! I knew about facing east especially in my area of Appalachia. I had commented on Facebook that my son worked for Kentucky Archaeological Survey 20 years ago and part of his work was excavating at Camp Nelson, Henry Clay’s home, and Shaker Village in and around Lexington, Kentucky. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Amazing! Love their positive input. If I remember correctly when visiting Mt Vernon decades ago, areas around the out houses turned up some pottery and other archaeological finds. Discarded items at the time. I guess it’s confirmed there was/is a slave cemetery. Good luck and wishing you speedy healing from your injuries.
I assisted in some of the renovations on Hickory Hill Plantation in Ashland, VA and the house had large 18"x18" wavy glass panels. We had to order 'rolled glass' replica panels to maintain the period look. The rolled glass panels were so expensive ,due to the size, I had to be meticulous installing the glaze points to limit chipping or damage.
I played in a cemetery all the time as a child. I had my favorite people I would talk to them. Tell them what was going on. I have never been afraid outside daylight or dark in or out of a cemetery. Now I will not walk into a dark room, for any amount of money. And yes there is a light on in when I sleep.
