That rocket from Hartson is one of the many goals I have etched in my brain knowing where I was, who with and what it meant to me at the time - genuinely thought we had a 50/50 chance for the final but more optimistic than realistic despite MON turning them into a team capable of beating anyone if they clicked on the day EG Juventus 4-3 in my top 5 games attended easily what a night that was
The referee that day was Dr Markus Merk from Germany. I had the opportunity to chat to him a few years ago and during our conversation I asked him what his favourite memory was during his long career. He said it was this game. Toward the end of the game the result was clear. Liverpool needed three goals to win (away goals rule back then) and there was only around 2 minutes of added time to go. However both sets of fans were singing YNWA at the top of their voices. He played an extra 6 minutes of added time, just so they could sing on. Incredible person.
Mido tool Zaki and completely ruined him. Mido retired at 29, fat and sad. Salah on the other hand is a model professional and a perfect role model for Egyptians.
real solid game of footie, no bollocking around from both Teams and a time when footballers got stuck right in. Im a Celtic man and a Liverpool man second.
Remember thinking this was the end of Liverpool. I'd never seen a team in a final look more clinical and dynamic than them. Cantona was patently superior. What on earth possessed Leeds to sell him to United. Years later Liverpool had the chance to sign Zidane. It wasn't to be until Klopp arrived.
For about 4 months, Zaki was truly unplayable. Got to wonder what he could have been if he'd had the professionalism and the work ethic to match his raw talent.
And that was the last time that season that Leeds won away from home. They and Gillingham were the only 2 teams in the 4 divisions not to win an away game.
As a reds fan from '87, who'd seen both good times ('87-'90) and lean times ('90-2001) that season was a memorable one. From blowing CL qualification on the last day against Bradford (with a 40+ Neville Southall in goal, no less) the season before to winning 5 trophies in a calendar year and qualifying for the CL, it was like a new world. Could (probably should) have had a league title (if we hadn't given 4 points to the worst Sunderland team in history) in 2002, beat the Mancs in the Carling cup the year after. But the wheels came off after that for Houllier by 2004. Little did we know we'd be only a year away from one of the greatest CL finals ever by then...but I think Liverpool as a PL force, certainly awakened in 2001.
