My favourite thing about Fred is every time he strikes up he uncontrollably let’s that high A Squeal into oblivion as if he has no control over it, then shortly afterwards delves into the most intricate piping known to man, leaving you flabbergasted that you doubted him even for a second 😂
I studied under Alasdair at a Balmoral School of Piping at Thomas Moore College in 2003 if I recall correctly. He was excellent and even saved me from a lashing from J. Reid Maxwell, which is another story entirely. Alasdair will always remain one of my greatest instructors, regardless of discipline for reaching someone regardless of HIS skill level. So many instructors are cursed with the "Knowledge" in my experience, civilian, military, or academic levels. Alsadair was one who could always reach anyone, regardless of ability. why wasn't there some fucking old guy talking through his whole performance like his drones are off and his playing is sketch and his tuning is funk and he's too old and his kilt is weird and he's gay as fuck.
I was at Winter Storm 24 and did a tuning workshop with Stuart. It was seven below 0 outside and the class went outside with him in front of the convention center so we could see how the pipes tuned at that extreme temperature. He tuned perfectly! He is amazing and the folks in the cars driving by in downtown Kansas City seemed somewhat puzzled amazed to see a group of people watching a guy play the bagpipes in that crazy weather!
