Unfortunately, this is far from common practice. Tree lines and grassy areas all over Iowa are being cut down and plowed under to make way for planting. While there are environmentally conscious farming practices going on, they are few and far between. Drive the countryside and you will see for yourself where the concern lies. Myself, I truly believe Good stewards of the land, is a term loosely used to make oneself feel good and actual good stewardship is something rarely found.
It seems like these metrics are just directly dependent on total farmed (altered) land. So, it's no wonder Iowa of all places could rank so high in categories like 'buffer strips' and the like. We have 'conserved' less than 1% of native land, as every possible hectare is sought to make money off of. Iowa is sick with this mentality. Our waterways are sick. Our politicians who happen to also be the primary beneficiaries of ag land use, are also sick.
My dad had grass waterways across our farm, in days before he was able to get farm tiled. In fact, he had a legal agreement with a neighbor who allowed us to join our tile system to theirs for the best drainage, that the grass waterways were to be permanent. A few years on, our renter installed the last tile in one field to finish the plan dad had. Then his partner in buying new tractor (too expensive for 1 buyer) plowed out the waterways to make bigger fields, workable with the largest equipment ever used on our farm. Dad no longer worked the fields by then. I can honestly say I never saw him angrier than when he found out the grass ways had been plowed. The damage was done, tho. Nobody ever replanted the grass. And a really wet year saw gullies begining where grass used to be.

What about use of filter strips, cover crops, buffer plantings, lower fertilizer inputs as a part of a overall strategy? Seems like you use the wetlands as an excuse for business as usual over application of fertilizer.
If your supply chain isn't working properly, it's broken. A more realistic, long-term strategy would be to reduce dependence on imports for important supplies such as computer chips and associated equipment, and reestablish our own lines of supply. Our current plan of exporting all raw resources to china, having them produce our goods, and then sell them back to us, is stupid. It's gotten so bad that we even outsource CDC work to china now. If we can't stand on our own, we are going to die. I find it bizarre that you guys believe patience and understanding are going to save us. It won't. China stole our lunch, that's why we're here.

We need to grow more than just soybeans and corn. The land in Iowa can grow a more diverse food crop. We need to also restore our natural wetland regions. We are loosing too much top soil. If we do not do that the land will turn into a desert. I totally understand the corporate faming is a profit only business but it is not sustainable.
