Hello, RU-vidrs. My name is Noah Stewart. I'm 26 years old, and I'm a film critic. I like movies from 80s, 90s, and more with different genres. I also like Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert, including Richard Roeper as well.
This was surprisingly a really good film. The casting of Woody Allen was genius and, as a matter of fact, the role of Z was actually written *for* him. I like _Antz_ slightly more than Disney's _A Bug's Life,_ but that film is very good, too.
Always love watching this film. Great subversive spirit to it. Also Ebert is totally correct about the fantastic ending scene in Australia - that ties up the whole story arc and spirit of the film. ‘Life sure does have a sick sense of humour don’t it?’ ‘Vaya con Dios’ 👌👏
In the early 90’s in the days of VHS - probably around ‘91/‘92 - me and some friends used to alternately watch Die Hard 1 and 2 all the time. I used to enjoy both almost as equally, and it was great that they were made so close together, pretty rare for sequels. I’d say the first Die Hard was slightly better, it’s an all time classic, but the sequel is still a great action film in it’s own right.
WOW. I had no idea that Roger Ebert didn't like this film. I'm pretty shocked, actually. I agree 100% with Gene here. I thought _The Untouchables_ WAS a great film that had plenty of plot, character development (especially in Elliott Ness), and that last climactic shootout is fucking legendary. I am VERY disappointed that my favorite critic didn't like this film. I thought it was one of the best films of 1987. Sean Connery richly deserved his Oscar® for Best Supporting Actor. He came out of nowhere and 100% nailed his character which was not an easy character to play, especially given his Scottish brogue. Robert de Niro I thought was great too and, as Gene said, the movie wasn't about Al Capone. It was about *how to get* Al Capone.
This was a really great movie. This is a movie you show a generation that only knows Steven Seagal as a parody. His earlier movies showed that he wasn't bad at all as an action star, and was a fairly solid actor. People also don't remember how good Gary Busey was before his accident. Tommy Lee Jones, though. You can't go wrong when he's your villain, LOL!
Well and what made it rough was I found Daniel impossible to cheer for. He was insufferably whiny. He literally forgot every ounce of karate Miyagi taught him somehow, as he won a fight to the death in Karate Kid II, to come back and just be beaten up all movie long. As awful as Mike is, it's hard to cheer for Daniel at the end, when Mike fights all day, Daniel has to fight once, Mike carries him for the whole three minutes, and Daniel wins the WHOLE tournament, with a some kata, a single flip and a chop. Daniel didn't DESERVE the ending, when if not for Miyagi yelling at him to stop complaining and whining, and Mike not carrying out Silver's orders, Mike would have been champ in about 15 seconds. In the first one, Daniel showed Johnny he was the better man that day, beating all of his friends, fighting on one good leg in the final match, fending Johnny's best and relentless attacks, still getting points, and finally winning with something Johnny never saw before. It showed pure guts and determination. Daniel had none of that in the third movie. He had to be blackmailed into it, and then fought like he didn't want to be there in the only match he needed to fight.
I thought this was a very good review of this movie and pretty spot on. Not 'bad' at all. But so much of the interpersonal relationship development was lost. Which was a shame, because everyone played their roles so well. I think the movie could have also done with Sato and Chozen showing getting a bit more at odds as the movie went on to lead to the storm scene, rather than just at the bar. Like Chozen and his men trashed Miyagi's Dad's dojo, which was also Sato's master. There should have been a scene between Sato and Chozen about that, to suggest Sato felt Chozen was creating too much collateral damage and not listening to Sato about how to draw Mr. Miyagi out. It still had heart though.
Especially as far as 90s action flicks went, The Rock was one of the smartest. It had great dialog, a great cast, and a very complex 'villain' that wasn't really a villain at all. He, in his mind, thought this was the only way he could do the right thing for the men he lost. And he did it with non lethal force to put himself in position to negotiate. In the end, he was never planning to do the worst 'wrong' thing either. The 90s was the rise of the over the top action flick, and so many of them haven't aged well. Like I had fun as a teenager with Con Air when it first came out, and today it downright sucks. It hasn't aged well at all, because the premise and everything about it is brainless front to back. Armageddon is another one. The Rock is still awesome any day of the week because it kept a level of smarts.
Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey, together at last ❤ These two guys are like the Odd Couple with guns. Their two characters go at each other like enemies. Their chemistry is brilliant.
When i was a child and watched this, i thought it was dark and too much... today, as a 39 year young man... i LOVE this film 👏🏿👏🏿🪖🪖 the heist snd Anthony's life were inspired by real events 💯💯
I like DH2, but the scene where Bruce Willis fires off an uzi in a room full of cops was ridiculous. They would have shot him long before he could point out the gun had blanks.
"Your friend died squealing like a pig." Ness throws him off the roof, screaming all the way down. "Sound anything like that?" Roger: "Ness is too passive." 🙄
I didn't like Cable Guy as a kid and teenager as much, now i like it more in.my 30s and 40s. We know people like him, they want to be your friend so much you feel uncomfortable they are always hanging around
Totally agree with Siskel here. I enjoyed the movie, & Connery & Cage are two of favorite actors to watch (they have completely different approaches to acting which makes them really fun to see working together, & it worked - great chemistry), but the pace, editing, direction is like “Speed on speed”
People romanticize this movie to much because of cult classic status and parodies. It was an entertaining movie, bash um up, corny dialogue, spray tan Hollywood people who looks nothing like the townsfolk. Now like most movies just fast forward to my favorite parts.
