I am Nick and I create metal sculptures mostly from scrap/salvaged metal aswel as some industrial style furniture, feel free to subscribe to see how I make some of my sculptures. and anything else that i get up to in the workshop.
Really enjoyed your walk through. At 63 I’ve just started having a go and your video was very helpful. Just to pick your brain a bit is there any materials you don’t weld as I spotted the odd chrome vanadium spanner and some bits that look like they could be galvanized. Any help or tips for the newbie would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the great work.
Hello pal. Wow, pi! Im notan artist, but everything I know about scrapping (for CASH) comes from watching youtube channels. I have a scrapping channel, as a felliw scrapper, I always am happy to support another recycler. Liked, subbed and 🔔
very noice i was just wondering what set up you use ie size of welder and gas ..and do you use the same setup to weld the mild steel, stainless steel and copper. But yeah keep up the good work Im just getting into sculpting myself so any tips appreciated 😀
It's an 'aip pirate' mig welder if I remember right it's 170amps. I use 0.8 mm mig wire with a co2 argon mix gas bottle. To weld steel and copper I just use the mig, it's not a strong weld but for sculptures it's fine. For stainless I would use Tig but rarely do that, cutlery that is stainless will be fine with the mig as long as it's not good quality cutlery 😂 hope that helps, I need to do a video of a few tips for getting started.
Cheers for that i'm using a clarke 151 te. I'll try some practise runs on the copper and satinless but i intend to put a euro torch on it and set it up to weld stainless with the dearer gas :(
@@neilgraham2403 if your welding copper to steel, aim more for the steel and just catch the copper slightly with the puddle, hard to explain but you will get it with practice no problem.
with you making a lot of one-off small pieces shaped in cardboard you could speed things up if you got an "arcdroid" cnc plasma - has a great trace app built in so no CAD needed - XTeme are selling them now too
I was so glad to see Part 2 appear in my RU-vid feed this morning. It turned out beautifully. I made a raven after being inspired by part one of your phoenix. It's not as big or nearly as well done as yours but I learned a lot from it and I like it (and it sold) so, thank you. If you have time, and don't mind sharing, how do you weld the copper to steel? It looks like you're mig welding it. I look forward to your next project.
That's great to hear, I've been thinking about making a crow or raven for a while. Yes I mig weld them together, it's not a particularly strong weld but strong enough for sculptures.
@@ALoadOfOldScrap Thanks so much for replying. I had never had luck doing that.....until today after I got your message. I did short bursts of weld and it seemed to meld nicely.
Awesome! I try to direct the heat of the weld into the steel more and just bring it over onto the copper a little bit and as you said short bursts works better
Hey there From Canada! Nice Phoenix. You mentioned a grease and varnish that can be used. Mind giving me the links? Or names. Very interested to check it out. I make metal art (also have a channel) and I’ve been experimenting with different finishes and was very excited to hear of a new one. Anyhow thanks for your time and the lovely video.😊👍🙃
Thankyou very much! The oil I used was called owatrol oil and they also do a varnish that can be applied after the oil which I think is called oxid vernis. Hopefully you can get it in Canada www.owatroldirect.co.uk/product/owatrol-oil/
Nice. However, there appears to be a slight anomaly in the design, particularly with the feathers not seamlessly connected along the back. Something worth considering :)
Thanks, if you mean with the scrap mosaic in the middle I decided to go that route because it honestly just looked better, I tried a few different options and liked this the most.
I could watch you work all day. I love that you cut your steel with an angle grinder instead of a plasma cutter. I don't own one and cut everything with my grinder or OA torch (which I'm very messy with), so it's nice to see someone do such great work using the tools I use. I'm looking forward to seeing part two. Hurry up :) Btw, I love how you filled in the abdomen with all those little scraps, nuts, washers and weld, etc. and also think you should leave the texture on the beak. It looks terrific!
Thankyou, I really appreciate that! I do use the CNC plasma aswell for lots of things, it's just sometimes it's still faster to get the grinder out. When I started making sculptures all I had was a mig welder that was £100 and an angle grinder that I paid £15 for 😂 you can do plenty with just those tools to be honest 😁
Yes it is a mig, for the vast majority of what I do the MIG welder is the best tool for the job, more refined than stick but not so much as Tig. Hope you're enjoying your class.
