The story behind the US reg for this Finnair plane is interesting in many ways: In the late seventies and early eighties Finnair was searching different options for Tokyo flights which hd turned important route and business for them. Basic DC-10-30 could not operate the route non-stop via North pole without heavy payload limitations and that time using of Russian airspace required stopover as direct non-stop flight was out of options in Russian airspace. For the flights via North pole, Finnair was even considering to purchase 747SP (Boeing tried to push deal too much to include 737 as replacement for DC-9/MD-80-family which was not favoured at Finnair and selling brand new 757 for leisure/charter flight - which actually was liked but entered to Finnair fleet much later in the late nineties). McDonnell Douglas was keen to keep Finnair at their portfolio and Finnair in other hand was a loyal customer so solution was found by adding removable extra tanks to hull and hence, model DC-10-30-ER for extended range operations was born. As Finnair had already two basic DC-10-30 models, in regisration plans new plane was expected to wear registration OH-LHC where OH maqrks nationality, L comes from Lucander, the founder of Aero Oy (Finnair's original name) and H means heavy as designation for Finnairs widebody fleet at that time and also air traffic control indication. But it ended to haved regisration of N345HC with HC as planned but other way complete extraordinary regisration. Reason was, that after test flights etc, plane was sold to US company Wells Fargo and Finnair long-term leased the plane. Because of US regisration,. Finnair's own pilot, who operated the plane, had to have their licenses issued by FAA.
