Dying after a checkpoint on the North American version of the game makes the cutscene in which the number of boxes missed fall on Crash's head not load. In Hog Wild, it is faster to miss one box rather than death abuse. This also resets the global timer that affects many of the games cycles, giving favourable cycles depending on that checkpoint.

So for the most part, I'd say I'm either "I can take or leave this" or "this was a good addition" on the special addition changes. This is definitively a bad choice, and I'm glad that I have no memory of this despite these being the first versions of the Original Trilogy that I saw.

Tebt, have you ever been alone with a past out Papu Papu in his hut? I once landed crash on him as he was passing out and somehow skipped the celebration animation and I was just alone, in control of Crash with a past out Papu Papu. I had to exit the level and then re-enter to actually move on because the game decided I hadn’t technically “won”
Yes! This is a bug in Crash 1 that is caused by taking damage from a boss on the same frame as what is supposed to be the victory. Avoid taking damage as a boss is defeated. This can also happen in Koala Kong if you touch the lava as he is defeated.
