I have a Jimmy Grippo story. 25 years ago I had a dog I would play with in a nearby park. Another guy (in his 40s) would play with his dog on the other side of the park. Over time our dogs played together and we talked. He found out I like magic. He says, “ have you ever heard of Jimmy Grippo?” I said, “of course I do!” He says, “Jimmy Grippo was my uncle.” He went on to say, and this is the funny part, he says “Uncle Jimmy would come over and show us magic tricks. @@Flygirl108 hi, Jimmy came to Caesars because of certain people from Miami wanted him there. Before Caesars he worked at the Desert Inn and had to ask permission from the powers to be at the Desert Inn to go to Caesars. I wrote a chapter about him in the “Dunes Hotel : the mob, the connections, the stories”.
I first met Matt about two years after this was recorded. He was a true one of a kind. The world was a better place when he was here. Thanks for posting these gems.

This trick was poorly thought out. The king vanishes and it’s not supposed to, because it has some *s****y *t*** on the face and also the back has the “X”. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to add a SECOND king. You can simply use a roughing stick on the top or bottom HALF of the face of the king with no “X”....OR use roughing spray on half of the face of the king with no “X” and on the exact same area on the back of the king with the “X”. When you need to hide 1 king push off the part that is roughed and when you want to slide off just 1 king push off on the part that’s NOT roughed.

Geno, looking at the group photo which includes Bernstein which seems to be a police photo of maybe a gang that was arrested, I wonder if Joe Bernstein is in fact the same guy who was in the "Purple gang" of Detroit?
Jeff Miller Jeff I never heard anything of Joe being in the Purple gang and he spelled his name Bernstein not Burnstein as the picture shows. Joe was around San Francisco as far as I know, originally born in Russia and his family supposedly settled in Oregon. He was also one of the first guys to “card count” in the game of blackjack. He and a guy by the name of Manny Kimmel (sic) played the count independently of Professor Thorp. There were a few guys from Detroit that worked the Dunes when I was there and never openly showed any sign that they were from the same bunch of guys. But could be as the picture looks like a young version of Joe. But my hunch is he wasn’t a member of the Purple Gang. Also I have never seen and connection of the Joe I knew and the PG in any books.

Jeff Miller when I made the video it was from an audio soundtrack of a radio show I did in 1989 and needed filler pictures. I erred in choosing that photo in a haste for finding pictures of Joe.
That’s interesting! I’m from Detroit and this caught my attention! I believe after prohibition in Detroit Joe Bernstein moved out to California! He was Russian as well. I think it might be the same Joe from Detroit? He and his brothers were the founders of the purple gang.
