Swedish nature has a bit of everything. The northwest, while not the alps, is definitely not flat. It is just a lesser-known area of Sweden because our mountainous regions are wild and uninhabited (also known as Europe's last remaining true wilderness). Search for Kungsleden to see some videos or pictures of a small part of the area. But Sweden in general, the further north you go, the more hills and mountains you get. But places like Höga Kusten (The High Coast) is still only mid-Sweden's east coast and is far from flat, and so is Söderåsens Nationalpark which is actually in the far south. Search the internet for some pictures.

I recommend visiting in the winter anyway, it's such a different experience compared to any other time of the year. 7:28 This isn't true anymore, they moved a few kilometers south and demolished this building. I'm pretty sure they have kiosks now. I think you guys managed to avoid the souvenir shop with an owner that will yell at you if they see you film, since you didn't mention it

Tornio is my hometown but they really are a twincity. That part of Sweden up to Kalix used to belong to Finland, where most speak Finnish and location names are Finnish also. The rivervalley region history goes way back before Tornio's eligible town status (which is one of the oldest towns) and is really more about people and shared language and culture than a state.

You didn't notice the big border?? It's the river itself, the deepest part of it. The border agreement between Finland and Sweden is largely based on this, with some additional details. River beds can change over longer periods. There is periodic checking and adjustments are done to the official maps in each 25 years or so. There is also an agreement of the management and use of the border river between these two countries.
@LiraNeo2023
@LiraNeo2023 27 дней назад
Oh thanks for the info. I did notice the river, guess I was referring to the border sign -- couldn't find one while crossing to Finland. I really think it's good example in terms of creating a smooth border crossing experience. I'm sure you barely notice the border there if you live in one of these towns.
@just42tube
@just42tube 27 дней назад
@@LiraNeo2023 Actually people are so aware of the border that using signs wouldn't add anything for locals. They take benefit of the situation, where different sides of the river have different currency, taxation and other economic and regulatory differences creating price differences. They know what to shop and from where. Pricing is often different depending on the situation. They can also work on either side of the river meaning in either or both countries.
@just42tube
@just42tube 29 дней назад
They don't necessarily speak different languages. In that region people speak Finnic and North Germanic languages on both sides. Swedish is the only official language in Sweden, but in the north Samé and Meänkieli are old Finnic languages. You could also say, and previously it was done, that Meänkieli is the local dialect of Finnish. On the Finland side Swedish is the second official language. People and their languages have never been actually separated from each other in this region.
@LiraNeo2023
@LiraNeo2023 27 дней назад
Hey thanks for explaining this! I was vaguely aware how people were multilingual while visiting. It's really helpful to know the details. Fascinating!
@just42tube
@just42tube 27 дней назад
@@LiraNeo2023 In addition to beginning multilingual there are old populations who have other native languages than the official languages of Sweden or Finland. At school everyone studies at least official languages and perhaps their own native language too, if it is different. In addition,. foreign languages are also taught at school starting from first class. Usually it's English, but not always. Later just about everyone starts studies in one or two additional foreign languages. So, having studied and having some skills in 4 languages is common. Being fully bilingual or having learned two languages at home from parents and friends is also fairly common.

Nice that you drow through the county of Jämtland and stayed in Åre and Östersund. The statue you said was a dinosaur, is actually a baby sea monster. The tale says that people have seen a sea monster in ”Storsjön”, the lake you walked by in Östersund! 😊 We have a family farm by a lake between Östersund and Sundsvall. It is a pretty area of Sweden. This is an inland mountain area, but not maybe as dramatic as you expected with high and pointed moutain peaks as in the western part of Norway by the Atlantic ocean. Or the younger mountains in the Alps. It is a very old mountain range between Sweden and Noreay (in north west of Sweden and in north east of Norway). Which became flattened below the heavy ice and got rounded mountain tops during the last ice age 10,000 years ago. Pity you did not went to Stockholm. It is a beautiful and exciting city and you had loved it. Maybe a next time? Welcome! 🙋‍♀️

@just42tube
@just42tube 29 дней назад
Peaceful borders are lines on a map. Sometimes these maps are based on agreements, which use natural formations like rivers to be the source of defining where the border is. In this case the river itself is part of the definition. So in that perspective there is more than just a border agreement and attached map with lines. But as abstractions countries and national borders are almost completely just human cultural inventions.

Sweden is not very flat, it's the opposite, if it was flat we would not have so many ski resorts, half of the country is mountains. Swedish mountains often are so big/wide that you do not even notice that you are all of sudden 100-600 meter over the sea level. The most flat areas we have in Sweden is in Skåne and around city Skara where we have most farm lands. Norway have more narrow mountains and therefor they can look more dramatic but not very high always, fjords have Norway much more. Denmark is really flat on the other hand, I think their highest mountain is around 120 meter.
@LiraNeo2023

I have likely over 100km to any mountain over 100m, Uppland where I live is clearly the flattest area of Sweden. Sure we have plenty of rocks and cliffs but nothing over 100m above sea level. I'm usually surprised every time I see the hills in Skåne, Södermanland or Västergötland, areas other people consider flat.
@roxpace
@roxpace Месяц назад
@@hnorrstrom That is not the fattest area, Skåne and Skaraslätten is much more flat. You have some mountains there too like Tallmossen, not high but still a mountain, eastern Sweden have less big mountains, same with south which have almost none
@hnorrstrom
@hnorrstrom Месяц назад
@@roxpace Well the highest point in Skåne is almost twice the height of Tallmossen and Skaraslätten have all the high beautiful Västgöta mountains overlooking the area. Sure I do have plenty of miniature mountains of 10m here on the farm in Eastern Uppland but overall the area has the lowest elevation of all Swedish landscapes compared to sea level.
@roxpace
@roxpace Месяц назад
@@hnorrstrom If you read I never said Uppland is a mountain area, so read again. The big mountain chains starts in west and goes north. And what I said you will never notice that you are on a huge mountain always, like kebnekaise massive is pretty high but doesn't feel like it mostly of the time.
