Hey Frosty. The video is more my initial impressions on the Sigma and not a review. I don’t think it would be fair to review a lens that I had only used a few times on a rental basis. I’m currently in Alaska shooting wildlife with my own copy of the lens. I might make a review video after an extensive 6 week use in the field when I return. Thanks for commenting. Have a great day. @@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai It felt like more of an 'the sl camera sucks', which I completely agree with however having the 500 5.6 on an A1, I've got some pretty decent images in the past 2 days, it's faster at focusing and sharper than my 200-600

Exactly. What I am having difficulty with is knowing how much good and bad is the lens or the camera. Ultimately it might be best to consider them as a combo- sigma lens plus Leica SL3. Because that’s how I’m using it. Good to hear that you are getting excellent results.

Hey Lee. I'm enjoying your videos! If you had to choose between a Canon mirrorless camera with more megapixels or a full frame sensor what is better for photography in general? I'll be heading to Tanzania next month. I just bought the Canon rf800 lens and looking for a Canon camera around the model price of an RP, 7, 8. Thank you!

Aloha Nick. Thank you for watching and for your comment. You will have a wonderful time in Tanzania! 🇹🇿 The 800 is a beast! I would actually consider pairing the R5 with it. Perhaps the R5 mark 1 . You should be able to find one on sale or a refurbished one directly from Canon at a good price. Since you will be using an 800 no need for the crop sensor of R7. If not the R5 mark 1 then the R6 II would make a nice choice, too. IMHO. Have fun and best of luck! Aloha, Lee

@@NicholasLyman well that’s less of a beast but still capable. And the fact that you purchased it tells me that you are interested in improving your photography and are hoping to get some nice images while on safari. I think you could get a great deal on a new R5 and “grow into it.” You also may want to consider a companion lens to go with the 800 as it will be too long in some scenarios. Have a great trip!!

Hi Lee. Thanks for the video. I will do safari in August 2025 and will do the Masai Mara migration, the crater, and some other sights. I plan to bring two R5s, a 600 F4, and the 100-500. I would like you to not bring a computer as mine weighs 5lbs. i want to bring my 12.9-inch iPad and use that to transfer images at the end of the day. Does your ipad fit in that Pelican case with all of those lenses? I have a 1510 that I bought long ago and I have never got on with it. Is your 600 just too long to fit? If I could get both lenses and two gripped bodies in one, that would be nice. Thanks.

@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai Месяц назад
Aloha Roger. Thanks for watching and for commenting. You will love being on safari! Hopefully you will be able to see the river crossings of the great migration! Regarding the 600 f/4-- unfortunately it does not fit in the Pelican case. I transport the 600 in the Canon soft case that came with the lens. So it is a little cumbersome, but I have not had any trouble carrying the two as carry ons (no trouble yet. Knock on Wood...). And for the iPad, I squish it on top of the lenses and cameras. It is all a pretty tight fit, but it works. Since the 600 doesn't fit into the Pelican case anyway, you might consider a camera bag that holds the two gripped bodies, the 100-500 and iPad. Not quite as easy as a roller carrying case like the Pelican, but it is an option to consider. Have a great weekend. Aloha, Lee

Hi Lee! You're my new best friend after only watching two of your videos! In just about a year from now, I will be on Safari in Arusha, Ngorongoro, and Eastern and northern Serengeti and will do the Mara river crossing. I'm so looking forward to this trip, as it will be both my first and likely only Safari and chance to visit Africa. I was excited to see your gear options as a lot of similar to mine. First, I will take my R5+R5m2, then my RF600F4, and my RF 100-500 as my zoom (I will be doing video as well). Also, I have the EF 400 mm F4 DO Mk2. I have wondered a bit about whether to go with a 400F4 vs the 600F4. I have heard a lot of people say 400 mm is about all you need, but I worry about being in a safari vehicle and being close to animals, and having to shoot down at them. So I think with the 600F4 I could try to get the farther out, thus giving me an more eye-lever type of shot. Certainly the 400 F4 is better than the slow 100-500 in the sunset hours. Of course, the 400mmF4 is not a lot different in size than your 300mm F2.8, so that means I could fit them both in a Pelican case. But I find those cases rather heavy. Do you take both the loaded Pelican and the RF600F4 on the plane with you? To further complicate matters, I also have a RF 200-800 F9 lens. Frankly, I'm thinking of leaving this home for this trip as I can get to 840 with the RF600+1.4x which I will be bring too. I think the 100mm of the 100-500 would come in useful for landscapes and things closer to the vehicles and possibly elephants and other large animals. Oh, I really enjoyed those cranes you showed in the other video in the crater. And the flamingos. I'm mostly a bird photographer anyway, so those get me very excited. As for a smaller camera, I was thinking of bringing my R7 with the RF16mm or RF 28 mm lens attached. And my iPhone 15 Pro Max, which I don't really know how to use well for photos. I do have the RF 70-200 F4, and while it is tiny, I think I want to leave it home. I'd like to take only three lenses: RF600F4, RF100-500, and RF 16mm (or RF 28 mm). Then 3 bodies: R5m2, R5m1, and R7. I'd rather just take two bodies but I want to minimize changing lenses out there. I want to get my gear in something like a Gura Gear Kiboko 30L+ (so I can bring a laptop) and a Gura Gear Chobe 16 in (perhaps). The bags are still up in the air (I worry about putting a laptop in the Kiboko because it will already have two bodies and two lenses inside, but on the trips I could load it out differently). I think I can get both R5s, the 100-500, and the RF600 in that Kiboko 30L, and then my 16 in laptop and R7+16mm in the 16- Chobe bag along with some extra cloths and accessories. I would appreciate any and all thoughts you have. I know this is a lot and I was rambling a bit, but I have another trip in April 2025 so I'm trying to cover both with my bag choice. I will be looking forward to your follow up videos after you trip in early 2025. Thanks and take care.

Aloha Anthony! Thank you for watching the video and for commenting. First off, I am so happy that you will be able to experience a Tanzania safari. You will absolutely love it. The photography is amazing, but so too the pure joy of the travel experience. So be sure to put the camera down every once in a while and just take it all in with a smile. Your gear sounds great. Lots of high quality options. I am guessing that you will be on a private safari or a photo safari with other photographers? If that’s the case then your gear list sounds great. However, If you are sharing the vehicle with 5 other participants then you may not have room for all of it. But I will assume you are on a private safari and will discuss your gear plans with this assumption in mind. As a bird guy, you must take the 600. The birds will blow you away! There are so many and so beautiful!!! So the 600 goes. And I’d put it on the R5 II. That way you can come tell me how great the combo is when you get back. If you are with other safari participants, just randos and not friends or family, then the 600 gets in the way. But for birds essential. Also excellent for the smaller mammals like mongoose, serval (eastern Serengeti), porcupines, honey badgers , and even for the big cats, too. For general (I feel bad using that term because all wildlife is special!) wildlife while on safari I think the 400 may be the best prime focal length. Too short for birds, but for all the other wildlife and the variety of distance and encounters that you will have the 400 will be very useful. But you already have that distance covered in the 100-500. So is it necessary??? Maybe not. Great lens and Canon needs to make an RF version but the real thing to consider is just how busy do you want to be out there thinking about which lens to use? I recall after my first day of my first safari I told my wife, “I felt so busy!” I think it is better to feel relaxed. So if you do bring the 400 I would not bring it on every game drive. But rather pick and choose. One morning take the 100-500. One afternoon take the 400 and vice versa. For me, on my private safaris I gravitated to the 300 and 600 for image quality. The 100-500 just doesn’t hold up to the primes in my opinion. But very good for video like you say above. To Be Continued…. 🤙
@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai
@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai 2 месяца назад
Leave the 200-800 at home. You have it covered with the three lenses mentioned above. Yes, I take the loaded Pelican and the 600 in its carry case on the plane. This was never a problem until I flew out of Seronera in Central Serengeti. They wanted to charge me more for the extra gear but I pleaded with the baggage handler to let me by and he eventually acquiesced. I was very grateful and gave him a nice tip so if you take everything you are thinking of be sure to have a tip ready if you feel that you received special or excellent service! And continuing with gear- I do not take a camera bag on safari. I just put the Pelican case in the safari vehicle. I find this protects the gear and keeps everything well organized so I can grab stuff when I need it. The 600 goes naked and gets a seat belt. 😀 In daily carry I use Fstop camera backpacks. That’s all I’ve used for forever so that’s really all I know. I have used Lowepro in the past and see Mindshift bags every now and again. For your small lens- I think 16 may be too wide. I’d go with the 28 or even a 35 if you have one. Is the 16 you reference a 16-35? If so then that’ll work. The 28, is it a prime or zoom? And I’m glad you don’t know how to use the iPhone for photography!!! You are a good man! 🤣 Have fun and best of luck! You will absolutely love it!!!! Aloha, Lee
@RogerZoul
@RogerZoul 2 месяца назад
@@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai Yes, this will be a private tour with two other photographers in the vehicle and each of us having a row to ourselves. I definitely don’t want to feel too busy out there, but that zoom is so versatile, light, and small. Taking the 600 and 1-5 would make the trip much more relaxing, especially during travel. I will think on it more. Thanks.
@RogerZoul

@@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai Both the 16 and 28 are prime f2.8 RF lenses made by Canon. These would be on the r7, a 1.6 crop-sensor body. So more like 26 and 45 mm, I think. I do have the rf 35f1.8 and the rf 24-105 f4L that I could take. The r7 has a 32MP sensor so I have room to crop to 20 MP and be fine. And I do have an EF 16-35 F4L too, so I have many options. I was actually trying to keep my load small by going with a 16 or 28 or 35 mm on the r7. Then I could leave the larger 16-35 or 24-105 at home. I also have even smaller RF-s lenses like a 10-18 and a 18-135 mm. These are those non L kit type lenses. I will find a not so wide option among all these choices and then figure the weight of it all. I do remember we have one flight during the trip and there might be weight restrictions there to consider. I will need to contact the trip leader to get the details. So this was valuable to be to consider these issues to get worked out. I really want to get some decent landscape shots if i can. Thanks, Lee!!

If I miss the eye, then I miss the photo. Stopping down to say f/4, as you suggest, does open up the depth of field, and more of the animal may be “sharper”, but that’s not how I like to photograph wildlife. Haha. Yes, I agree. It is overpriced. I made the decision to purchase it primarily as a landscape lens that I could also do wildlife in combination with the Sigma 500 f/5.6. I just got tired of going in wildlife trips and coming back with thousands of photos. So I wanted something slower. And boy is it slower! 🤣 for BIF it’s basically useless. But for larger animals it’s fine. IQ is excellent. And for landscape I like the APO lenses. In hindsight I probably should’ve kept half my Canon gear and bought a Hasselblad X2D but I need telephoto for waves and compressed landscapes. And weather sealing so I went with Leica. I’ve told myself I have to use it for at least 4 years to get my money’s worth. Then may sell. Who knows? But yeah, totally overpriced. Agree with you there.

Hi Lee, the Sigma 500mm f/5.6 looks like a real capable lens, How does it work in low light?. I've used Canon since the late 1970's, I guess my father got me interested in photography. He used to turn our bathroom into a darkroom for his black & white film. I'm still with the Canon EF mount on the Canon 6D M2. But I'm very interested in the new Canon R5 M2! Yes it's a nice looking lens. Anyway you have a great weekend. Aloha, Paul
@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai
@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai 3 месяца назад
@@pauldarville3843aloha Paul. With minimum aperture of f/5.6 the lens does suffer in low light scenarios. So if photographing wildlife the dawn and dusk encounters will be difficult, especially for the more active subjects. In low light the photographer must wait and choose their moment, perhaps when the animal pauses to check their surroundings. I also think that the minimum aperture of f/5.6 will have us shooting at ISO of 2000 and higher in low light, making some kind of DeNoise software a must. So yes, there are some definite compromises as with all equipment. Regarding the R5II- I agree with you. It looks like an exciting and excellent camera. I am also interested in it. But even more so in the rumored Canon 200-500 f/4 zoom. That’s something that I would love to try! Have a great weekend and enjoy your photography! My dad got me interested in photography too. I would want to take my "Sigzilla" 300-800mm f5.6 with a Speedbooster. However...the Sigzilla is a monster. Plus it requires a heavy duty tripod and heavy duty yoke-style gimbal. All together it is very heavy and combersome. So it would likely stay home.

Unless I miss understod, you said both converters are 1.4x but they are clearly different dimensions. Im not familiar with cannon specifics, do those two lenses require different converters?
@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai
@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai 4 месяца назад
Aloha Ken. Thanks for watching and for your comment. The 1.4 converters are for different mounts-- Canon EF mount and Canon RF mount. The EF 300mm f/2.8 II lens is an EF mount (older version for Canon DSLR cameras like the 1Dx series or 5D series). However, I can use this EF lens and EF 1.4 extender with newer Canon mirrorless cameras like the R5 and R3 by coupling the EF to RF adapter to the EF extender. The EF to RF adapters are black in color. The other 1.4 extender that I showed in the video is an RF mount for Canon's mirrorless cameras-- R5, R3, R6, etc... So yes, because one lens is an EF mount and the other lens is an RF mount they require different extenders. I hope this clears up any confusion. Have a great weekend. Aloha, Lee

Hi Lee, thanks for making this video! I'm planning a trip to the Masai Mara in December. The line up I have in mind: 1Dx Mk3, 70-200 f/2.8, 300 f/2.8, 1.4x Mk III, 2x Mk III, Leica M10, Leica 28mm f/1.4, Leica 50mm f/1.4. I'll be in private conservancies so I'm told the jeep can get relatively close to the wild life. This will be my first safari, and would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks in advance!
@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai
@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai 4 месяца назад
Aloha Zan. Thanks for watching and for your kind words. I’m happy you found the video useful. First, you will have a fantastic safari! It is truly one of the great experiences one can have in life. Your kit looks great. Since you will be off-roading the 300 will be enough in many situations. I’d recommend starting out with the 1.4 on and see how it goes. 420 is about perfect for many encounters and you’ll have the 70-200 for the times when the animals are very near. With the M system I’d consider a 35 if you have one. I found that when shooting the Q2, 28 was often too wide . Remember you’ll be in the vehicle and the edges of the vehicle can easily enter the frame. I was often using the “35 crop” mode in the Q2. So that’s the only thing I’d ask you to consider, if you have a 35. No need to get one if you don’t , but just a thought. And lastly, the 2.0 will be useful for birds and maybe rhinos but the aperture hit, softness, and time to employ make it less useful in my experience. Especially since you will be able to go off road in the private game reserve. Have fun and take a lot of images!!! Aloha, Lee

Hello bro , is leopard sighting common in ruaha ?
@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai
@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai 5 месяцев назад
Aloha Naser. I can’t say if it is common or not but I saw 4 different leopards in 7 days of game drives with 6 individual sightings. One male is well known amongst the guides and they have nicknamed him Moyo. This leopard is very chill and calm around vehicles. I was there in mid November. I think the wet season would be difficult to spot most animals because the bush is just so thick. I loved Ruaha and saw most of the big animals except cheetah and rhino. While I really enjoyed Ruaha it was very hot in November. Other than it was fantastic. Have a great weekend. Aloha, Lee

@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai
@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai 5 месяцев назад
Aloha Naser. Thanks for watching and for commenting. The leopard photographed and seen in this video was actually on the Crater rim. So for this leopard, technically you are correct. It was not in the Crater, but rather on the crater rim in a tree along the road. But we did see it on the Ngorongoro game drive. However, my guide assures me that leopards can indeed be seen in the woodlands on the Crater floor. I just haven't seen them there yet. Thanks again for your comment. Have a great weekend. Aloha.Lee

Over many years of photography I have owned dozens of lenses with focal length from 8 to 800mm. I got rid of most of them. Today I own just a 50mm F1.8 Prime and a 17 to 85mm zoom. The do all I need and my camera bag is a lot lighter. For a safari I'm not sure about the prime but it's so light I would take it, just in case.
@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai
@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai 5 месяцев назад
Aloha Ian. Thank you for your comment. I can completely understand and appreciate your less is more kit. I think a safari offers so many opportunities for all kinds of photography that you would be happy with your 50mm prime. It sounds like you know what you can expect from it and what images it allows for and what it does not. Happy shooting and thanks again. Aloha, Lee
@MENSA.lady2
@MENSA.lady2 5 месяцев назад
Safari organizers take their customers to where they know the game can be seen. The animals are used to seeing vehicles and tourists and are not spooked by them. That allows good photographs with modest lenses. I would suggest that anything over 200mm is just excess baggage. Sadly some will never learn.
@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai
@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai 5 месяцев назад
@@MENSA.lady2 A valid point. However, there are certainly many instances where a longer lens is preferred. Even in the cases you point out, having a longer lens allows for greater depth of field and separation of subject. It also allows for distance to be taken from the subject so you are not just shooting down onto the animal. Also, there are many places in Tanzania like the Ngorongoro Crater and the Central or Eastern Serengeti where off-roading is prohibited. If traveling with an ethical guide in these areas a long lens is not only desirable, it is necessary. Ultimately, I think it all comes down to what are the expectations of the images; how are they to be used; and what compromises the traveler/photographer wishes to make in terms of budget, packing, weight, number of other safari participants in the vehicle and desired image quality. Thanks for watching and commenting! Have a wonderful weekend. Aloha, Lee

😂 it’s good to be back!!! (From the future 🤣). Thanks! Mmm, did I miss the 70-200? Not really. There was never a moment when I said to myself I wish I had it. I missed the f/2.8 aperture though. The 100-500 has excellent versatility and sharpness but subjects just don’t “pop” with that lens like others with a wider aperture, imho. I was very happy I had the Q2 for landscapes and skies. The 28mm was too wide so I used the “crop” mode and shot at 35mm most of the time.
