This was from a concert performance at Carnegie Hall in February 1989. It may have been broadcast much later, but the performance definitely was at Carnegie Hall. I think Tumagian was a stand in for another baritone who was ill.
I heard it twice in London and it was vivid and spectacular. I went a pre concert talk with Tippett where he talked about Star Trek amongst other things.The emi cd is awful boxy sound recorded live but very badly. This cassette is much more like it should be!

This is much better than the Andrew Davis recording on EMI/Warner. Someone asked why Colin Davis didn't record it, but I can't find the comment now. The reason is that Sir Colin wanted to record it but the record company, Philips, said no. Because of that Colin Davis didn't renew his record contract with Philips. Thanks so much for the upload!

You can tell real dramatic tenors/sopranos from the speaking voice. James King's speaking voice is big and fatherly and would sound like a baritone to an untrained ear.
