Travel Backroads is dedicated to show some of the lesser traveled routes from places you know on the maps to places you may not find. From these videos you can decide if you want to take your own vehicle there. Keep in mind roads do change with the seasons and from year to year. I often camp at or near my final destination so I'll try and show you what the campsites have to offer. I share driving footage and make note of any turns I make to some of my favourite places. From time to time I may offer insight into products I use to camp in these remote locations. I'll also even throw in some Tips and Tricks along the way. This is a great road from chase all the way through lavage and into kamloops. If you start at kamploops and do the same route, but chase, head back to kamloops turn left after a couple Kim's, onto to the Armstrong back road, and loop back to kamloops
I grew up on that lake in a log cabin until we moved into Chace and went to their elementary school. ❤❤❤❤❤ Living here was the happiest times of my life . Thankyou for taking me down memory lane.
The story goes on how this mine was found , there was an old road somewhere above where the main pit is located and there was a coffee shop located there, for some reason a drilling crew decided to do a core sample behind the shop ,the rest is history. Also this mine used to be the second biggest user of electricity in BC , the gov of BC is the biggest consumer of electrical power.
I live almost 1/2 way along the route you just took. Sadly, from lemon creek to silverton is on evacuation and the forests have now been burned from lemon creek to silverton on both sides of the valley. Our picturesque valley is no longer due to wildfire. Choking on smoke as i speak….
You might have included “ Trepanier” which I don’t think exists anymore just south of Peachland. I recall as a kid it was judt a wide spot in the highway #97 with a Texaco station that had a round Rexaco sign with a big red star . That was common then. Texaco was “ Texas Oil Company “ sonthe big red star was the star of Texas. There might have been a cafe there but we never stopped passing through which took about two minutes.
That is Rattlesnake Island across the lake from Peachland. I thought it was part of a provincial park or indigenous people’s land reserve. So it’s hard to believe a commercial venture was started in it. This island is supposed to be the home of the Ogopogo thus s sacred spot to the native people. In 1867 a farmer was taking some horses across the lake. The story was the horses were swimming when something pulled them under. This was the first encounter of a non native settler with the Ogopogo.
I grew up un Summerland in the 1950’s and 60’s. Nice to see a video as it is now. Our house was at where that apartment building is now on the right at 2:49. Across the street that building used to be Durnin Motors Chevrolet dealership in the 1950’s. Almost everything I knew as a kid is gone now except the mountains that haven’t changed a bit. It’s too bad that old Summerland had numerous fruit orchards in town. I remember well where they were. I think in summer they moderated the hot dry weather but now they are all gone the hot weather is probably more like it was in the desert before anything was built there. Summers must be brutal now up on the flat land above the lake. The original Summerland was below on the shore of Okanagan Lake. What you call “ Summerland “ was called “ West Summerland “ in the 1950’s to differentiate it from the original Summerland by the lake.
The road to the right before you got to Dewry Lake that you thought goes to Deka. It does not . Going on that road to the east it goes past Rat lake and Cougar lake to the junction were you can go left back down to Mahood Lake going to the right you end up in Clearwater. Lots of campsites and lakes along the way.
My brother and I were through in April 2024. It's definitely a winding road nice drive, though. We saw the gas pumps, but I'm not sure if they are still in use. Thanks for sharing!🇨🇦
great video! I'm not from the Okanagan, but used to visit cousins/aunt-uncle every year as a child thru adulthood. Only once drove thru Peachland as a quick detour on the way back from Kelowna back in the day. Beautiful little town, i'd consider moving there to retire and still be in the middle of the bigger communities..perfect spot. By the way, from your video and other online Peachland related stuff, parking is free along the roadways.

FANTASTIC!! What a perfect video. This is the best video I have seen in a long time. Knowledgeable, calming voice, beautiful scenery! I live in Salmon Arm and this was just perfect. I have watched a lot of utube videos from Arizona and the like but this was a step up!! I hope people from across Canada watch this, they will see how beautiful this area is.
Turn left at 4:10 sometime (Riverside Rd) come visit the old Mara townsite, great history, beautiful area. You come back out to 97A at 6:29, an awesome backroad!
The road does look old and patched. I love the backways and byways. And not any traffic. Nice! Those creepy beetles are in our countryside in Utah. They love the desert.
Upper Arrow Lake and Lower Arrow Lake together are Arrow Lakes. Local person here. Enjoying your trip through here, though I've done this hundreds of times😊
When you leave the traffic circle you are on Main St. This used to be part of the Trans Canada Highway. At the West end, where you turn right because of all the marinas the TCH continued onto a wooden bridge which spanned the channel and ran into the rock face where it made a hard turn to the North. As you drive North on Riverside Ave. the big red building on your left used to be the firehall and we played bingo in there Thursday evenings. The first houseboat rental to open in Sicamous was Twin Anchors Marina which started operation on the Shuswap River in Enderby where they had a plant to build the houseboats. Plans at that time were to connect Mara Lake via a canal through Enderby and Armstrong to the Okanagan Lake. This never happened and Twin Anchors couldn't get their houseboats up and down the river during periods of low water, so they moved to Sicamous. Where you went under the TCH bridge and parked, directly in front of you is a public beach. If you walk north along the beach there is a pedestrian bridge that will take you over to more public beach in the subdivision you will drive through later and talk about the houses facing the lake. At the far end where you turned around is the River Front Nature Park.
At 1:41 the turn off at Baird Bros Gravel is the new Salmon Arm Hill. Hwy. 97B. At 2:26 is Danforth's Corner, named after the original store. That's the old Salmon Arm Hill. Referred to by people in Salmon Arm as the Enderby Hill. At 3:57 we see some brain-dead motorist passing a rig on a a double solid line. This is the worst mistake any motorist can make. Most highway deaths are caused by some one being on the wrong side of the road. At 10:40 you talk about the road being narrow. If people would obey the slow signs and stay on their own side of the yellow line there was nothing wrong with that road. Went we went to look at houses, the realtor in Enderby took us, by boat, from Grindrod to Sicamous because those rock out crops went right into the water. There was no road from Mara to Sicamous. My farther was the powder man who blew those rock faces back from the water. Living on the water, as children, we would stand in the lake and watch the puff of smoke as dad set of the explosives. We would watch the splashes as the big boulders hit the water, then we would duck under the surface and listen to the splashes,. Popping back up again we would listen to the blast echo off the rock cliffs on the West side of the lake. If you take a boat to the West side of the lake and look up at the cliffs, there are ancient hieroglyphics carved into the rocks.
Disappointed. Title of vid is Lumby. The big rig you passed is from a company called Sutco not Chambers. It is not actually a truck. Legally it is a tractor with two semi trailers. A rig like that is known as a B Train. Because it has three axles under the back of the lead trailer it is called a SUPER B. Commonly called a chip truck it is used to haul chips, to a pulp mill. Chips are a specific size of wood used to make pulp. The pulp then goes to a mill where it is turned into paper. It also hauls Hog Fuel which is waste material; sawdust, bark, branches, leaves, etc, from a sawmill and is burned in pulp mills to heat steam boilers to create electricity. A small pulp mill can produce enough electricity to power a small town but BC Hydro refuses to buy it from them. They also haul sawdust which is used in kitchen stoves, furnaces to heat the home, or in a plant to make fibre board. DCT or Dan Chambers Transport is BC's largest chip truck carrier. Their head office is in Vernon, but they originated in Lumby. In the early 70's. Their office and shop was on the highway in the middle of town. They hauled chips from the sawmills in Lumby to the pulp mill in Kamloops. A driver got $20 per load. My fist job driving big trucks was hauling logs through Cherryville to the mills in Lumby. That also paid $20 per load. I got my training by riding with the drivers of Dan Chambers on their Kamloops runs. So I am disappointed that in a vid called Lumby, I didn't get to see Lumby. Arrow and Herseys were the two companies in Duncan. Those companies, before B trains were invented, used truck and trailer and shorter dumps at Harmac and they had to separate the truck from the trailer so they had to chain the trailer to the dump platform. With the longer rigs and longer dump platforms they no longer chain them. They don't dump onto the ground, they dump into huge hoppers which use conveyors or blowers to move the product to large storage piles.
Why do I get the impression you live somewhere near Enderby? East of Enderbush in a piece you seem to have edited out, is pevine corner. The road off to the left, to the farm, is also the road to Hunter's Range. The road is used to service the DOT towers up on Enderby cliffs.That used to be our farm, before there were any buildings. Some where near Ashton Creek is another road to the North where there was a small ski hill. We had an old Iseta with a rope wrapped around a rear wheel as a tow lift. I have only ever been all the way to Mable lake once, about 60 years ago. Though we used to log the South end of the lake, via Lumby.
At the 5 min. mark is a farm, barns on the right, house up above on the left. By the barns is a collection of cars. Some oldie but goodies, but not for sale.
I have watched several of your videos they are pretty good. A couple of comments. You say to the right is Silver star. At this point you are well north of silver star. You talk about a rest area that we don’t get to see. I don’t remember there ever being a rest area. Could be one now. Been many years since I have been over that stretch of road. I stand corrected, I googled it. It is there, it is minuscule. I went to the A. L. Fortune school, in Enderby. I walked this stretch, Armstrong to Enderby, once . Coming home from Armstrong, trying to hitchhike, not one car passed, in the wee hours. A never knew that i had walk over a divide. In the 60''s there were plans to build a canal between the Okanagan Lake and the Shuswap River but it was stillborn.
