For $330 + maybe another $20 in supplies and your time and effort might as well get an electrician out for $500 and have him do it. Mine will be coming out next week to have a Tesla wall cherger installed. Plug and play for $500. Your video will be great for those who get crazy estimates or want it done asap.
You're absolutely right. I'm pretty handy myself and could of ran conduits to the panel. I chose this route because I'm literally charging on the otherside of the wall. This became the most elegant solution. Not the cheapest but perfect for my case use. Thanks for your comment 👍
Since I park nose in to the garage, I instead bought an RV extension cord and ran that into the garage, and plug my Tesla charger into that. Since the charger end is large, I had to cut a larger round hole in the wall, but I bought 2 inexpensive ($8) plastic RV cord hatch covers to cover each end of the hole in the wall. (You flip the hatch down so it covers all but the cord). I leave my Tesla charger plugged into that and only plug/unplug at the Tesla end when I get home.
Nice video. One correction - - Energy is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), not kilowatts (kW). Kilowatt is a measure of power, not energy use. Power and energy are different quantities that measure different (but related) things. Just FYI, for your future videos to be more accurate
What’s the difference between this black splitter and the white one? Both are still available on their site, but I figure this is just the gen 2 version?
hey Dave - slightly late to the party and installed a totally different unit but was very grateful for the installation insights you provided in this video. I am not sure I would have got here without it ! Got suckered by the acc and power cable inverse colours , but once I went yellow red and red yellow on the MOST and wire harness connection I had sound. Very appreciated.
I really love this stereo, but I have had it a year now and it shuts off randomly. Have you experienced this? Do you have any idea what would cause this after a year?
Yes there are well known brand like Kenwood,JVC, Alpine, etc. Except they are about double or triple in price as well as not offering full "Android" features but skinned in their own flavor. The name brand does have better touch screen sensitivity and speed, but again the cost. I was just weighing in cost and benefits and choose this for the features.
Great video thank you. I am still having trouble with two things 1) Steering wheel control not working at all. I simp[ly plugged in the Can Bus to the Toopai harness and then plugged it all in. I did not understand what you were doing with the "T" caps and the Ground, B1, and ACC. Do I need to get power to the steering wheel control. Also 2), the rear veiw camera and backup signals are no longer working. Do I need to wire the camera in some way or do I need to get power to the camera somehow?
Thanks for your comment. As far as I recall, it's been awhile, the steering wheel control where pretty straight forward plugging into the harness. As for camera, are you using it with the factory camera or the aftermarket? I use mine with the factory camera with the special harness that is necessary. As for the T-taps, it's just an inline method to tap into an existing wire, not necessary but an easy way.
You must of connected to constant 12v instead of ignition 12v, that's the only thing I can think of. Even after 3 years of my install, my car still starts as normal. Even though the unit is aging against newer units, it still functions pretty well when I hotspot my phone and using the Waze app for mapping and traffic and bluetooth for music streaming. No regret installing it for what it's worth.
@@Wong4u user error, sorry! I have android 11, little different setup. My backup camera worked after I switched it to NTSC mode, but backup camera light does not work. Can you help ?
Hey man, I’ve heard T tapping into the ACC cable will drain your battery. Is that true? From a different RU-vidr he said to just tap in the b++ cable. I have a ML550 and the guy has a 63. Let me know
@@Wong4u thanks man, also I installed mine and my speakers have a loud thump every minute if the car is unlocked and one loud thump when I start it up and then it’s normal. When it’s locked no loud thump. Is it possibly my fibre optic? I have it currently wired ACC and B to the cable on the right of the ACC and the negative to the one on top. I’ll probably have to get a multi meter to test since I got a 11 ml550 and you have a 09.
@@Wong4u hey man I just bought a whole new unit. I installed everything fine and the problem I have only is there is no audio at all. I have switched the fiber optic red and white cables to the other red and white on the navigation but still no audio.
Hello Dave, any idea who is manufacturer company of this unit, or what brand is it? Or what is the modell number of this unit so i can try to find brand name?
It's a Toopai brand which they do not sell this particular model any longer. But just do an Amazon search for W164 Stereo and you should be able to find various other ones similar to this model. Just look for the fastest processor you are willing to pay.
Thats a great solution, I think I will go the same route. I have no space in my electrical panel for a new breaker, so electricians want $5k or more to add a new circuit. One of them suggested I look into a splitter because I have a good 60amp to my dryer. He did replace the breaker with one that will shutdown if it gets too hot (just in case).
Good to hear that you are considering this as a solution. It's still working great for me and the splitvolt breaker did actually functions as it should caused by me swapping out to a first gen Tesla mobile charger capable of 40amp and I forgot to change it in my car to lower it. The splitvolt breaker flipped as it should. Great device.
Unfortunately no, it will not work with the changer. However, with the usage of SD card, it's way better than a changer. You can literally have thousands of songs on it
This is a great video. I had this in mind but couldn’t find anybody that did it. My set up is a little different. I am going to have to create a 10 foot cable because my dryer faces the opposite direction of my garage I will require creating the cable. I was thinking of using a 10/4 dryer cable, one end of the connection would be a nema 14-30 male and on the garage side an outlet just like yours to plug my charger. Thank you so much for this video. Makes everything easy and helpful.
Glad to hear it helped. Seems like there is not much love for the SplitVolt vs other products. Guess high dollar marketing from other companies makes the difference.
The SplitVolt at least mine, is max out at 24 amp (30 amp minus the loss). At my other house, I have ran a 50 amp circuit, with loss is powering up the Tesla at 40 amp setting.
Thanks for the video! Trying to find a solution, and it seems this will be it! From your new receptacle in the garage, what kind of cord did you get to charge the Tesla?
I used the Tesla mobile charger that came with the car. Also bought another one off craigslist to leave inside the car just in case I need to charge on the road somewhere.
Hi Dave, this is a beautiful video and it has been 2 years already. I have ML 350 2007 and I need to change it to android, please could you recommend for me the best brand to use and how much it could cost me fully installed with camera and with RAM at least 4GB. Thank you
The number only increases during the charging of the EV. So its a really easy way to see how much cumulative power you have used. Can also reset to zero if you want.
I had never had the breaker flip. People must be drawing too much power or wired it up wrong. It has been working perfectly switching between dryer and powering the car. Ran through about 4500kw as shown in the digital display. Love it, it just works.
Oh, just a thought, people need to set their car profile to draw 24amp (30 amp@ 80% usage). If set to draw 30 or 40a, of course it would trip, as it should by design. That means it working to prevent burning your house down.
Lol, I used to keep track of how many Kw I charge each time to get a sense of what my usage was. I no longer care as it's only a few dollars each time. I've had this since to the video was published and at 4500Kw power used which equates to $450. Not bad at all.
Buyer beware! 1) This company touts”free online tech support”. It is free and it is on line, but nobody available at the time of your install. They’re on line sporadically and around 7-8pm central time. They always refer you back to their install guides which are a little confusing and not user friendly. 2) I’m experiencing poor contrast on sunny days. The display they sell you has brightness control but not contrast. The brightness isn’t as bright as it needs to be. 3) I paid an extra $8 for 7 day shipping because I was excited to install the new display. The display came with a defective cable that prevents the use of my backup camera and completing the installation. The cable was deemed defective the same day and one week later, I still don’t have the replacement cable. So the y day shipping I paid for was useless. 4) DO NOT PURCHASE THIS UNIT IF YOU DO NOT POSSESS AN ABOVE AVERAGE KNOWLEDGE OF ELECTRONICS AND COMPUTERS. There’s quite a bit that you need to tinker with to get this thing half way decent. 6) Just not worth the money. I’m on the process of filing a claim through PayPal.
Hi Dave, this was a great video. Can you tell me how is the radio working after a year and have you had any issues with it since? I have a 2010 ML 350 and I live in South Florida. Thanks.
Still have the car. Still working good. Radio reception sucks a bit but I normally hotspot my phone and use Spotify for music, as well as Waze for navigation. It does update the car to today's standard screen wise. I'm sure if you purchase one today, the updated ones now are even faster and better than mine. If I have time, I would get a front dashcam that incorporates into this deck as well.
How did you create the box on the otherside? I have the same setup up with the dryer on the same wall as the garage. would like to do the plug in box like you did in the garage
It was a fairly straight forward install. 1) I just drilled a hole using a hole saw kit from Harbor Freight with a, 1" if I recall. 2) I bought the shortest possible range cord (which has a 14-50p head) from Home Depot. ( www.homedepot.com/p/Bergen-Industries-4-ft-4-Wire-Oven-Range-Replacement-Cord-Black-R628204/310733153 ) 3) run the open end range cord through the hole to the other side (garage). You can now plug in the 14-50p head into the Splitvolt to get an idea of how much of the wiring you can stuff into the wall. MAKE SURE it is NOT turned on. again, do NOT flip the power on the Splitvolt or you will be dead. 4) mount the metal wall box, wire up the range cord to a 14-50 socket, also available from home depot. and you are all done. Sounds like a lot of work but it's pretty simple and takes less than 30 mins. Good luck.
@@Wong4u I was going to ask the same question, thanks, you have solved one of my major headache! talked to a few installers, all they said are need new Panel!
Hello, good afternoon, can you please tell me on the back of the radio where I have the reverse camera, your video was of great help but I can't see how I connect the rear camera.
This was the item from Amazon I bought. Currently no longer available but many other similar ones. www.amazon.com/dp/B07QJCGFG1/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_AH5VA64NQ06ASH3YMNKN?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Not exactly the same unit as it's discontinued because its older with android 9. The new version from the same company is this one www.amazon.com/dp/B0827R4DZJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_FQVV4KTVC19SDE6XK435 This one is Android 10.
