We did the Pass in the early 80's, was quite a experience, just married, driving a Jetta GLS and with only front wheel drive and some steep inclinations the front wheel were spinning, struggle to get proper tracksion, passed a place called HELL right at the top of the SWARTBERG, down from there to Prince Albert.
I want to share with you an insane experience along that same route. I, along with 5 others (including my parents who were in their early 80's at the time), did the same trip at the spur of the moment but in the opposite direction. That is from Groenriviermond to Cape Town. It was about 18 years ago during a Namakwa flower trip. The original plan was to drive from Garies to Groenrivier and back. Arriving there I ended up chatting to one of the gamewardens who showed me on a map how the route south goes from there. He then left. I then and there took the insane decision (young-ish and stupid) to drive south from there instead. I had a new Jeep Commander, a full tank (a very thirsty 4.7 l Hemi), a Venter trailer ,cooldrinks and snacks in the car, do why not? What can ever go wrong? 😇😇😇 It was still early-ish, so off we went. To call it 'eventfull' would be a gross understatement. Got stuck many many times but our spirits remained high. The beauty, peace and tranquality remains with me to this day. My biggest concern was the ever dropping fuel guage. For the entire day we saw no living soul. By then all the biltong and drinks were finito! Around 5 pm we arrived at what appeared to he a divers camp and someone directed us to a shop which had a fuel pump. And with that we realised life is good! I am now 67 and currently absorbed in a dream project. Building a '59 Morris Minor pickup body onto a 80's Suzuki SJ410 chassis, powered by a 1600 Ford Kent (crossflow) engine, coupled to a 5 speed Sierra box). I call it a SuFoMo ( Suzuki/Ford/Morris). The sole reason for this project is to do the same trip again with other crazy friends but from south to north this time, this time well prepared with at least a week available to us.
As a small boy in the 1980''s, my family visited the Nels' (Flip and Marie Nel) on a farm called "Beeskraal," situated in the Swartberg Mountain range/Pass, close to Calitzdorp. I wonder whether the farm still exists ? If there is anybody that can confirm this, I would greatly appreciate it very much !
How long does it take to drive Swartberg? I’m doing a road trip in January. We want to leave early and do the pass en route to Baviaans? Just wondering if it’s realistic…

Thank you for sharing. What a beautiful tusker. I believe the tusker is N'waTindlopfu. What makes me think this is the tusks, which look the same and the silghtly thinkened area of skin on the upper and middle trunk which seem to match.
Excellent option just been through the Rigterveld with mine. 4x4 capability excellent. Agree gas should have a quick connect and the door a little tricky. Going to make a bag to put on the roof to put mattresses in. I think the mattresses should be 30mm thicker.
Baie dankie, n goeie review en ek kan sien dis deur die eienaar en nie n verkoopsman nie. Ja, die gaspype en daar mee saam die water om op te koppel is vir my n groot hassle. Maar jou review het vir my ook bevestig dat de Chobe dalk die beste opsie in die segment is. Die hele charging system is by die meeste produkte n probleem. Staan n oaar dae sonder krag onder n boom, dan het ek ondervind dat batterye nie hou nie omdat solarpanele nie goed laai in skadu nie. Met die die direkte laai van battery vanaf kar, laai dit ook nie vol nie. So ek het in my vorige wa die volledige victron stelsel vanaf die solar inverter en 220v charger en kar charher installeer met draagbare solar panele. Lg het ek baie beter gevind as vaste panele op die dak as jy in skadu is want jy kan die panele skuif waar die son ook al is. Maar goed, die sort situasie lyk my is opgelos in die Kavango met die uitskuif stort, so dit sal dalk vir ons beter werk. Maar dankie ek dink so n eienaar review is baie insiggewend.
This is the real definition of affordable overlanding. Never considered a P-series before but because everything else comparable is out of reach, this bakkie seems good and of good quality.
Although I am yet to test drive one of these I'm still not a fan of the engine based on the specifications. Apparently the next series, due next year, will have a larger capacity engine. Thanks for the content. Cheers from OZ
It isn't turbo lag. The problem is trottle response is slow. Because its drive by wire. And the computer controls the pump and injectors fuel timing. You fit say a chipbox that improves trottle response then when you step on the pedal to excel then suddenly the bakkie pick up and go like a patient out of weskoppies. The turbo idel on 1.1bar and while standing and rev you can reach 2.9bar and its a vgt turbo. There is no turbo lag

Do you know the name of the big Tusker? I don’t see him on the SANParks list. Although I do think it out of date. He is truly magnificent. Incredible sighting!!

@Etienne Beukes Thanks for the feed back. We will have a look into our music that we use but can u be abit more specific what it is you dont like about our music so we know what to look into. And yeah u should definetly do that trail was amazing and that braai is a home made braai.
@@tru4_tv Its a good thing you highlighted it. I will definitely keep that in mind when in foreign land that sometimes its not the shortest path you want but the entrance/gate to your destination
Thank you for your feedback on the GWM. I'm very much interested in purchasing the GWM LT 4x2, can you recommend it as I'm a little hesitant to purchase Chinese, but for the price and what they offer, it remains a bargain and the bakkie looks awesome.
@@dietmargl9501 I've heard of complains but I also know that Haval and GVM is working hard on aftersales and parts availability in SA. Myself I have had no issues
