If Dexter had ended with Season 4, it would have been remembered as a true classic. It was the perfect ending -- Dexter losing his wife and being left alone to raise his son without his moral compass, all because he allowed his Passenger to toy with The Trinity Killer.
Somehow both the TV finales and the ones in the novel are all just *disappointing* I liked the first four seasons of the original series and actually loved New Blood for the most part. The tv adapation lacks the humor of the novels and humanizes Dex rather quickly all things considered. Spoilers for the books but in the first one he's reeeeeal close to killing Deb and Brian escapes and shows up sporadically in the novels afterwards. I personally think the black comedy of the novels would have worked in the series (maybe the first three anyways) but it becomes too reliant on melodrama and lets just pretend Deb never told him she was in love with him in lol. There's a funny juxtaposition that remains in the novels (near emotionaless serial killer with a banal home life and two stepkids he's raising to be like him) that could have actually been translated to the tv series.
I know another comment mentioned something like it, but I hope that if the ending to Dexter: Resurrections is satisfying, that they create a show where Harrison is the main character and Dexter is his dark passenger. Wouldn't have to be that long, but it'd be a good watch.
I just watched all of Dexter and New Blood in about a month, overall the original series was good overall, I do agree about the mischaracterization of Deb, and her death is what made me really hate the finale. Dexter living wasn't too bad, in the end he had lost everything because of his own actions. New Blood episodes 1-6 were some of the best episodes of Dexter, unfortunately the last two episodes may be the worst. I am looking forward to and welcome the new shows, you can tell Michael C. Hall does love the character, and I am cautiously optimistic regarding the future of the franchise.
I feel like the best send off for Dexter is him going on trial for his crimes. They did the death fake out TWICE and the unrealistic way he kept getting away with his crimes as seasons went on. I hope the prequel series will have new characters that come back in resurrection to see Dexter's trial.
Feel like it should have ended in the original dexter show, would have re written it entirely differently where Deb is being accused as an accessory in dexter’s crimes and the final season is him getting her a new identiy and somewhere safe whilst dexter evades the police but eventually gets caught trying to escape on a plane that unbeknownst to the police deb is on as she watches him get arrested, one final episode shows dexter in jail being gunned down by three cops as inmates cheer at the death of such a ruthless serial killer, want to make it shown that dex is the bad guy, You should not feel bad for him.
Genuine question, I really hope you respond. Why does Dexter need to have an ending/conclusion where he’s caught and faces is actions? While it’s possible to make a decent ending like that, my ideal ending for Dexter would have been him and Hannah moving to Argentina, with Debra recovering, and having that “lived happily ever after” type of ending. The whole premise of the show is that Dexter is a “good” serial killer, and I think it would resonate much better with fans if he had a good ending, at least in my opinion. Real serial killers get away in real life all the time, so why not give this “good guy” serial killer a happy and satisfying ending?
@@thewhiplashfx2001 Definitely true, and that’s actually what I was hoping for Dexter Resurrection, as we could see the whole Miami crew come back and see dexters true nature. Then it would be ironic if he was acquitted, and essentially slips through the cracks of the legal system, exactly like his victims, giving everyone the realization that maybe dexters intentions held some weight. But ultimately, it’s really difficult to give this character a satisfying ending given his nature, but best case scenario for me is he has a happy ending somehow.
The only shine of light this has is that there’s still more story to tell and lose ends to fill without it feel like overrun and a complete cash grab. Mostly with just the Miami Metro finding out about him. I loved New Blood and the ending, it felt complete so I’m a tiny bit annoyed that there uncanning it
Many people have the misconception that if Dexter is caught by authorities what comes next is already settled, he will be punished for his crimes and he will be either executed or have to go to prison for the rest of his life. To these people I'd say wait a minute, hold your horses, there is still long way to go for that to happen and the most likely thing in the end is that during his trial he receives such a deluge of public sympathy, not to mention the avalanche of compassion when the true origin of his story is known, which will make extremely difficult for any jury or judge to be too hard on him. People seem to forget that this won't be a Ted Bundy or a Charles Manson who is sitting there but one toddler who saw her own mother cut to pieces by a saw when he was only three year old. That would be enough to set loose the waterwoks. Then, on top of that there won't be any widows, fatherless kids, mothers crying for his victims as all of these "victims"' were scum, despicable people who even their own families hated. Not to mention the drifters & psychos like the drunk driver or the gang of five (S05). Just remember when Debra for the first time realized of this fact, when she tries to give some words of comfort to the son of one of the disappeared and the guy snaps: "I just want to make sure he is dead, so me and my family can finally live in peace!". The only one we know who would think of going to the stand to give her VIS is the widow of the chorus director (his first on screen victim) but she'll change her mind when Dexter reveals who the hubby really was, a pedophile and a child murderer. Which would bring a new element that would take the focus from him and put it once again on his victims as many of the victims which blood is in the slides weren't even suspected of being the monsters they were so in the end the number of monsters he put out of circulation will increase for the public eye so the magnitude of the social cleaning job he had done will appear far greater than they even imagined. As a conclusion, I think even I could get him a sentence like to be put under the care of medical professionals in some mental institution where he'll be treated until doctors consider him cured, ready to rejoin society. And I am not even a lawyer..
I startet watching Dexter. Love this show. Great writing and good story telling. I just startet watching season 4 now and I want to ask. Should I stop watching after season 4 to not see the chaos or is it still worth it?
I would love it! Especially if there was a trial for all the world to see. With him saying things like, think of the lives I've saved by the lives I've taken.
"But it's murder" "Can't take the law into your hands" "Society will fix things" "Principles are infallible, because they are principles" I, for one, rooted for Dexter. While killing people, because he sort of had to, he's still a better person than most. There are other evils than removing a life. Just to name an example: torturing someone for ten years, as in years beyond when they begin to beg and plead for death. Or, the death of thousands. But you're not having the same emotional response to those kinds of deeds. You can know it logically, but it won't register as such emotionally. So, you're doing it wrong by not rooting for Dexter Morgan. He did what he could with the hand he was given, and he was still doing better than most of us. He had a system, a moral code, but his ethics was vulnerable to disturbances, and disruptions should I say, to his moral code. But, BUT! Being a murderer does not make someone inhuman - the opposite, in fact. Therefore, his mistake of killing his own adoptive sister, while an ethical misstep, still supported by his moral code. Evil, or good, why not both?
I also rooted for Dexter and think he is definitely a lesser evil that most but he still was not a good person as he was incapable of having the feelings of being a good person
@@thewhiplashfx2001 That's where we disagree, I suppose. Dexter was a good person, "at heart" as they say. He did good, with what he was forced to deal with. By choice, in many cases. So he was a good person, just stuck in a body that wanted otherwise. Begs the question, though - what makes a good person? Is it what we are born as, or is it what we do despite all that? A lot of people are born into such poverty, theft becomes a necessity for survival. It's complicated, isn't it? It's a common symptom when logic lacks cut and clear definitions of what is meant. Dexter was a good person, some of the things he did was not. Which, I think is what made the novels, and the show, so gripping. Made us (sub)consciously question our presumptions of many things. What is good, for starters? Is it whatever we recognize in ourselves, and are prepared to defend? An ego thing, if we recognize a part of ourselves as evil, we'll try to defend that as good because what would otherwise happen to our self-image? Aah, the archetype of the anti-hero. Batman and Wolverine can both be made villains, if presented as such. Even Superman, in some cases. I mean, Superman unmade days for farmers once when he rewound time. But it wasn't presented as such, and so we don't interpret it as such.
@@gandalf8216 no I agree with you I just meant emotionally he was incapable. Hell while he was technically killing people for a selfish reason “to satisfy his own needs” he did save a lot of lives by getting these other monsters off the streefs
There can never be a truly satisfying end to Dexter, because everyone wants different things from the ending. You can't have an ending where he dies, goes to prison and lives happily ever after all at the same time. The showriters, and us as fans, have to pick one.
There is one possible logical and satisfactory ending to the saga. First, it can't end up with Dexter happily married and his past forgotten. Check. Neither fugitive Dexter can work. There was a series in the 60s about a fugitive with David Jensen and even being the 6os he had a lot or trouble keeping two steps ahead of the law. In the 2020s that would be impossible given all the technological advances since then. He wouldn't last two episodes. Check. Dexter going to prision or being executed is lame, the moment this is about Dexter fugitive we all know it is gonna end like that unless he is killed or committs suicide before being caught. Nobody would want to watch it as we all know the ending. Check. The one I pick is one that has already being proposed and very logical one also: he is caught but then some three-letter gvt. agency offers him a job working for them. It would be something like Dexter Bourne but in this case as an assassin who loves his job.
@@rubenoteiza9261 "Dexter in the Silence of the Lambs". Locked up in a cell with FBI agents coming to visit him to ask him about various cases they can't solve. Every now and then some cop show up after a court case goes sideways and Dexter is let out under false name to "serve justice" and then gets locked up again.

But I dont think the Hannibal Lecter angle would work that well, we are used to see him as very dyamic and active character and I dont think a fat Dexter sitting in a cell and going: "Now, let's see what you bring me there. Let's check this file" will go well with the fandom. Also, remember that he still has his code and if they are capable or merging his code with theirs needs there is no need to have him under under control like a rabid dog.
The issue is they rush shit into one season. The 1st 4 seasons couldve been stretched into 2 seasons each and the show wouldve been so much better. And set upna satifying ending with the rita death. They rushed miguel they rushed doaked and they rushed brian. They dont soak in these anazing story lines and rushed them then we got fillers with some canon moments. Bad blood wouldve been better if it was 2 seasons. Fuck if ya want one season atleast double the episode count. The endings arent ever deserved or satisfying because theyre rushed. They introduce ideas that are amazing then Don't let you really sit and enjoy them instead rushing to a end and making it unsatisfying.
I dont get this obssesion of so many about the idea that the ONLY satisfying ending for the series HAS to include Dexter paying for his crimes, facing the consequences of his actions, blah, blah, BUY WHY...BECAUSE YOU WANT IT TO BE SO...? The last time I checked this is a drama series, which means it is realistic in a world where many murders remain still unsolved and where many murderers, let alone war criminals, have died without anyone even knowing who or what they are, so what is so twisted about giving to this series a similar ending...? I have no problem with that but I guess for some people the Hays Code is still alive and well.
Right I DONT agree with that conclusion. If anything he should've trained and continued with Harrison. A 2nd chance to train someone after Miguel failed. He also wouldn't leave Harrison again. It would be amazing to see them working tg.
The real reason why this is a thing is because the dinosaurs that fund movies and tv series don't want to invest in anything that isn't already established. This is why we are seeing all these old series like dexter come back from the dead and get propped up by even more bad writing only to die again. I'm calling it that Lost will come back next.
