I’ve been fishing all my life and caught a lot of trout during that time both Brown and Rainbow on lochs, rivers, lakes, still waters and reservoirs across the UK. But wherever there is water I’ll have a cast, there isn’t really a method I haven’t tried but I always go back to fly fishing.
I got the bug back seriously in 2020 and things had moved on after a break of 15 years from trout fishing as I became a course angler. Suddenly everyone has 20 plus fly lines and about 1000 flys and back then I had a 20 year old Daiwa whisker fly rod and a floating line but I could catch fish.
Fast forward I am now in a team, compete across the UK and want to share my experience with you. Follow me as I try to gain my first Scottish Cap.
I try to keep everything really simple so if your are a beginner and new to fly fishing it’s the perfect place to pick up some tips. All of the flys I tie I fish myself, you find them in my box and I will share how to tie them.
Honestly when I first started tying I went wild with all sorts of variations and different materials but to be honest most of what I tie are pretty simple those seem to be what catch most of my fish. Can’t take the credit these patterns have been around for ages I just put my spin on them. My rule is tie 3 fish them and if they work then tie more if they don’t you haven’t spent to much time or materials for them to sit in your box. Everything I tie works and you will find in my box. The hooks I’m using are from Fly Fish North bronze nymph hooks. For drys I’m using filling mill grab gape or Fario short shank specials
Thanks for the reply Mario I used to fish rivers but due to circumstances I now only fish still waters I do much the same as you and tie flies trial them if no good start again I have got together flies that work for me now but still learning , the water I fish is only stocked a couple of times a year so it gets difficult and natural flies seem to work best, your ideas definitely give me inspiration. Can fish them on the point as a washingline setup with nymphs on droppers on anything from a floater, your tip lines and sinkers. Alternatively fish it on a 2 fly cast 8-10ft apart on a di line pulling or rollypolly good options.
I was at lawfield last Tuesday and a guy I spoke to mentioned you, I forgot to ask his name 🙄, do you know any places that let you fish boobies? Stunning fly.
@@brianr9529 Hi Brian thanks for your message. Hopefully it was all good whoever it was lol. Most of the small stillwaters don’t allow you to fish them as historically they would be fished on the bottom with short leaders and would quite often lead to deep hooking the fish. You can fish boobies on the comp waters such as Harelaw and Lake of Menteith or the large reservoirs in England I’ll have a look fire are any others that allow it local to Glasgow

@@craigmunro4539 that’s a cheep and cheerful maxcatch floating line. I used to buy Rio and all the expensive ones but these for the price are excellent. I do admit to still using a Rio with my 5weight for drys as it is a bit more delicate with the presentation.

@@jamesmoore4782 just natural dubbing and a brown hackle it’s one of those flys that I think as long as the proportions are right it gives the right impression in the water. The hackle ads movement and helps sit it up in the film
