Scienceforce had not a clue how this is to be used. The demonstration was just painful The PFM-II with tapes is, by a long shot the best sound system for model railroads ever devised for the model steam train geek. I have 2 of these, and a 1200 sq. foot model railroad empire. It's just a sonic toy without the locomotive and a trains. A stiff trip wire connected to the drive axle with cogs on the locomotive gives an endlessly variable 4 chuffs per revolution tied directly to the position of the valve gear on a steam locomotive. It really gives a symphony of sounds related to a real railroad: 156 combinations of steam whistle; Doppler effect; Reverb; All kinds of railroad sounds, both synthesized and recorded on 3- 4 track loop tape players. Each of my steam engines have a small speaker in the tenders which, at that size (HOn3) make a very small sound. The trick is to add several 4 Ohm or 8 Ohm speakers ganged together around the layout to get that realistic sound out of the tender and in your face. This is like a combination of audiofile gone berzerk and model trains.... I know it's been 9 years but Is this one for sale?
I just secured one. I may be interested in selling in the future, but want to hook it up first. I need a basic audio out, and am not planning to run it with a model train.
@@samadhist Devin, do you have the (3) tape deck; console with all the knobs; a primitive reverb unit, and a tethered, walk around throttle? This was the most expensive version and also the most flexible. Almost everyone in the model train hobby has gone from an archaic DC format like the PFM is, to a DCC format where the voltage is constant through the rails and the potentiometer is in the engine and hand held, wireless throttle. If you just want to hear the sounds, hook up a couple wires to an 8 ohm speaker. Remember, without a train on track, you will not get the full blown effect. When you are done playing with it, lehmee noh and I'll take it off your hands.
@@jeffreynolds7894 I have the Quadratape III, console with all knobs, the reverb unit, LTM-02A, LTM-02B, and a couple other related kits, but not the walk around throttle. I haven't seen one of those anywhere. Specifically I'd like to be able to get a clean 1/4" output from the unit, not direct to an 8ohm. Thoughts?
This is fucking awesome. Someone suggested that I look up the digitone 80 because I was wanting to build modular synth that had similar characteristics to an OB-Xa. Sense these are also sorta rare I'm still searching. Super dope none the less.
Nice.I made all my album "the dragon way" with a farfisa polychrome.

Believe it or not, but I found one of these at the local recycling station. Mint condition. Surreal to see it lying in the electronics trash bin. So I managed to save it. And it sounds amazing! :)
Thank you for sharing. I just read an article about the mk1 PCM sound system from the July 72' issue of Model Railroader. Impressive technology, especially for the time. The system retailed for $250, or $1500 in today's money.
Were did you get this guy,I have this sound system, and I have never heard one better.Read the book control the setting and you can imitated just about every sound a steam loc makes. This guy has no idea what he's doing.Very disappointing
I drooled over this when I was a penniless teen. I actually ended up buying the instructions, component sheets and circuit diagrams, but I never built one! Amazing machine. I now own an Arturia MatrixBRUTE, which isn't quite the same but it does have some things in common and it's extremely cool and inspiring... but for me, there will only ever be one Maplin 5600S!
Curious what you mean when you say "standard jacks"? I have one of these that I am refurbishing and folding into an audiology curriculum at a university, but mine has no connectors and I need to buy some or make some. Any info would be appreciated! THanks!
I also own, The Muse. I paid $150 for it. I don't remember if I got it in 1970, 71, 72, or 73...but somewhere around that time. The band, Zepher (from Denver) once used it at a show they were playing at the Civic Auditorium in Albuquerque. I read once that they had one in the Smithsonian as an example of early synthesizers. I've had it in my garage for ten years, and now in the bottom of a closet for the past 20 years. No box with it, and it's missing the back panel, but still works. Lots of fun.
Hi, does this machine produce the train sounds in coordination with an actual model train? For example if I advance the throttle on my train set, does this unit make the coordinating sound as in the engine going faster or something like that? Thanks a bunch!
Hi there! I picked up a PFM Minisound 2 (plus the Quadratape system) a few days back to use it for soundeffects for some live performances I plan to put on here in Japan. I don't have any train sets, power supply, or throttle control, and I was under the mistaken impression that I could just hook the Minisound up to a mixer and play sound out through it. So what I want to ask is how I can use the Minisound as a sound generator without hooking it up to an entire train set. Do I need a power supply, throttle, and other equipment for this to work? How did you get your system to play? Any help you could give me would be immensely appreciated!
there was a filter speaker inside the engine, this system would send DC power for train to run and an AC signal that a filter allowed only AC to a speaker whole idea was to make choo choo even more real
It's really a great effect and very different respect the other Binson models that I owned in the past... really impressive to hear a sort of reverb due the 10 heads. I'm not a guitarist and my musical interest are direct to vintage esoteric synthesizers so.. I'll put it on Ebay soon, I'm sure I'll regret since the EC10 is rare as the hell!..
+scienceforce I hope I'm able to buy it from you. how long is the delay time? mine is an European version so the disc spins 20% faster here. some day I'll put in a DC motor for variable speed. one of my favorite patterns is playback head 2 playing out of head 4. I can only imagine what that would sound like if it were spread out to a head 5 & 10!
+arensel84 man I want it, but I just bought the Special Binson NOS for nearly $4000 in January. I really can't spend make another big purchase right now. I could give you my near mint EC-3 plus $500 usd. soundgas recently had one just like mine for a little over $2k. though I understand if your interested only in selling. it's soooo rare tho! I wonder if I'll ever see another one for sale.
Great equipment! Jesse from vintagesynth with the TR808. My reply to you has been stuck in the outbox, so just reply to the post on my for sale thread.
