With this role, Plishka demonstrates how a singer can , over time , transition from singing leading bass roles to various character roles such as Dulcamara. All this he managed with dignity and class. He made his debut in 1967 as the Bonz , just two years after Milnes.
I confess my patriotism for Amer has waned in the past decade. I think we have really lost our way but this is a spectacular piece of music. I was part of singing this as a child in 1965 in school
Его пение русского романса наполняет сердце любовью и печалью,что всё так быстротечно!Великолепное исполнение,достоверно эмоциональн!Ваша Звезда горит!
Among the finest recordings made for the Canadian Talent Library. Keath Barrie got inside the lyrics and with his rich voice, he made this song his own. Never got the recognition he deserved.
Fabulous dramatic tenor voice, power and framing great. They just don't do tenors like this anymore. Can't think of one dramatic tenor today that is special. I know Nilsson said once about her voice; I tok me 10 years to find it and another 10 years to tame it. She waited until she was in her late 30 ties until she took on the world. Opening the season at La Scala 1959 with Turandot. She said it was the greatest honour in her musical life. And the rest we know about. Did her last Electra in Frankfurt age mid to late sixties. Then retired but kept on with concerts into her seventies.

In 1983 I had the pleasure of singing Morales in a Vancouver Opera Carmen in which he sang José. We had a short spoken dialogue scene in Act One, and one night he stuck his head in my dressing room and said 'Hey John - I think our little scene went rather well - don't you?' I was stunned that a big star like him would say that to a beginner like me. And at the closing night cast party he paid the liquor tab for the entire company! What a class act!
Wow, it’s amazing to see this after so many years! I remember, as a child, sneaking down to the tv room in the middle of the night to watch this show and night walk as well. There was something strangely comforting about this for me. I was a weird kid! 😂 Thank you for posting this as it’s really brought back fond childhood memories. 😊
What a gifted singer ! I never appreciated his voice earlier in my listening of opera ; now, I'm much-more mature and the expressiveness of his voice is his alone. You can believe what he is singing ... not just an opera singer but a man ; a human in great sorrow.
Yes, very impressive, especially for a performer who spent a lot of his time in the popular realm. For those who love the lower voices, check out Pinza, Christoff, Ruffo, Stracciari, and Ramey in our time. Opera produces miraculous voices.
