I get you I like my own company I also do lots alone. Often been accused of being a loner. I suppose being abroad it will be difficult at times. I tend to just have connections in business only.
This is on my list to visit with Magdeburg and Chemnitz. One point it was called Stalinstadt at some point. I did Dresden and Leipzig this will be on my next trip. Also frankfurt on the oder.
Interesting choice of song to react to. The point I don’t think you fully got, is that is not some general east-west metaphor criticizing “wokeness”, but a very, very specific call-out to … people like me. Who grew up in one of these increasingly right-wing towns and moved West. Who are not the ones staying and fighting against the right propaganda. Who at some point have taken silly pride in living in a not-so bad neighborhood, politically speaking. Who put some distance between themselves and their hometown. Who changed their use of words, because people really don’t understand it if you say tell the time differently. Who have adapted to their new environment, mostly, but are still different. Because here, people have a different background. They have inheritance, networks - most people in the east had zero capital, and all infrastructure was bought by western investors in the 90’s. That’s what they mean when they say that some doors will be closed for you forever. You’re still different. My parents didn’t get to go to university in the GDPR, as they were Christians and therefore not party members. I never felt as displaced as when I started going to university in the west and not knowing other working class kids. You know how often I’ve mentioned where I come from and was told in return “I didn’t hear that (= you don’t have that dialect”) as a compliment? Almost always. Because the stereotype of the east is so negative. I actually looked this song up today, because I was feeling a great deal of almost survivor’s guilt in having been to the CSD here two weeks ago, feeling completely safe. And then seeing footage today of my hometown’s CSD being overrun by nazis, burning pride flags. So, so many nazis. And I sit here, not knowing if I would’ve been brave enough to show up there. I think you got the gist, but this is a really particular experience. And Berlin still has a special status, with its split history and being surrounded by Brandenburg - it’s not the same as moving to the actual western Bundesländer. The first time I heard this song, it hit me like a ton of bricks.

@@jeszeha I absolutely didn't think it was rude. I appreciated it, truly. I have experiences that you wouldn't relate to not being where I am from, and you do too. That's part of the reason I made these videos, to learn and try to understand

I lived in Kreuzberg for a month (a few years ago) and it was the greatest! Walking distance to the Markthalle that you went to (back when Veganz was there). I'll be there next month as well...staying in the same place on Blücherstraße. Kreuzberg is my favorite part of Berlin. It's like old New York and old San Francisco had a baby and it's Kreuzberg, Berlin. hah!
You have no idea what the doctors mean, what stand for. In addition to obviously funny titles, they represent politically critical lyrics and encourage their fans to take responsibility.
As a german I can tell you that this is not only an immigrant problem. I am very shy too and don't have much people I would call friends if any and I am german, born from germans and so on. If I talk to people they always say "hey, I never thought you're so nice...bla bla bla", but in the end they don't care. I try to be friends and call now and then, but nothing comes back. So I'm alone again.
Iam in wonder, how an u.s. american comes to the music of "Die Ärzte"..., but its cool, "Die Ärzte" are some soft punk to us in germany, there are such more hard bands in germany, but they never sayd anytging wrong, their music and textes are huge ironical, derp, dark joking, but without any mercy at all, is realy good, absolutely funny and intelligent written too, they was the most cencored band in germany for many, many years, no joke!!! (in an hysterical "cold war-time"), id loved them verry much, they perfomed my child and teenietime also, if i was an child/teenie back in the 1980s/early 1990s..., great stuff at all, some peace of timeless, german music, best wishes to the U.S., i realy hope harris will make the run! Very nice video! Thank you! Asparagus is not for everyone, I have the feeling that even us Germans are divided about it. I know people who absolutely love it and people who hate it. Apparently, there is no in between. I live in South Germany and I love Brezeln! Only here you can get really good Brezeln and Laugengebäck (Pastries that are made with the same dough, but do not have the Brezel shape; my favorite is the Laugenring, basically a Brezel bagel). Brezeln are not only a bavarian thing, you can also get them in Baden-Württemberg. They usually are a little bit different, the "arms" are thinner and crispier, but the rest is the same.
@@SethinBerlin Couldn't agree more. It's history too. And it would have been such a strong statement about Berlin to leave the old palace arrangement "imperfect". Also great socialist realist murals inside. I visited it as a kid. (I was born in West Berlin, but my father family was from East Berlin, so we were frequently over there) .
We need more Mexican immigrants in Germany. I try to tell that to the Mexicans I meet over here in the US. Wasn't met with much interest, I have to say. 😅

Good video! Lack of salt and pepper is my biggest annoyance at restaurants. Also, I still call the white asparagus the oppressed kind, as it's grown under plastic. Green has so much better flavor and color. Also, if you can make it to Hamburg or Bremerhaven, their fish sandwiches beat anything in Berlin.
I’ve had it in Hamburg. I liked the Berlin one better. I had the smoked salmon a few weeks ago when I was recording a portion for this video that I decided against. And I had the Bismarck in like 2020 I think. Or one of them. I can’t remember which 😊
