If you turned all other thrusters off in the flight ai except for the thrusters up if it would improve efficentcy due to the ai using the side thrusters constantly
@ShiftyshadowTV
@ShiftyshadowTV 4 дня назад
When I tested this I tried that. The AI constantly turned all my thrusters back on. Also, it completely doesn't work if you don't have at least one thruster in each direction.

Great video, but I went overboard and did the math. Also, a well optimized flight program should result in a burn of 52838 Liters of fuel. This is done by restricting the thrust to a specific value, based on the experienced gravity value, that would allow for a constant velocity of 100 m/s without accelerating or decelerating. I see other pulsing methods, but it is way more tedious and larger range of error.
@ShiftyshadowTV

Cool to know the optimal value for fuel use! I'm happy that it's pretty close to what I got in a few of the tests (~5% difference). Certainly close enough for me to feel good using them.

You can get around the whole printing subgrid issue by just using plugins which I strongly recommend doing. Skipping the intro video, printing multiple grid ships, and being able to do stuff like send camera feeds to LCDs opens up a lot of options in the game. Sorta like running build view and colored icons.

There's a better way to automatically close doors. Use an Event Controller that monitors all of your doors. When one is open, it triggers a Timer Block to START, running for a few seconds, then applying the CLOSED action to all doors. Only the opened doors will then close. In this way, you'll never get caught in a closing door unless you hesitate longer than the timer.

I think that staying at 100 or 99+ms is crucial for saving fuel and time. also overide is the best way , but that was not an objective test in my opinion. The right way is to stay at 100ms and drop a few ticks every 15-40 seconds unless you start dropping speed. and overide is safe , as long as you can click on lower overide 10x before the ground.

@franki99bum
@franki99bum 26 дней назад
@@ShiftyshadowTV I mean just stick to 100ms , why just holding it around 95ms , this 5ms make a big difference for 2 reason , first the time that would get you to space and 2nd the less time you need to get to space the less fuel you consume , results were pretty closed and you did mention that you are not favoring override , seem a bit biaised to me , but thats just my opinion ..
@ShiftyshadowTV
@ShiftyshadowTV 26 дней назад
@@franki99bum If you use thruster override the way you described in your first comment you will get to space faster, but it will use more fuel than the way I used thruster override. The time you're saving is very small, and you're over thrusting for the entire journey. The over thrusting will use way more fuel than then amount you save by getting there a few seconds faster. If you don't believe this, for any reason, I gave you all the tools to test it yourself.

What if you set a trigger for the door opening event and close it after 20 seconds? Instead of an endless loop with an unpredictable closing time
@ShiftyshadowTV
@ShiftyshadowTV Месяц назад
That would work just fine. Some things to think about though: If you set it up for each door individually that would be a lot of event controllers and timers, might as well use sensors at that point. If you set up one controller that detects when any door is opened and then closes all after 20 seconds, you could run into a problem where you ALWAYS have a door close in your face while walking a certain path through multiple doors in your ship. You'd have to test and time that system for each grid individually.
@Kain_V
@Kain_V Месяц назад
@@ShiftyshadowTV ah, I am building smaller ships for a while, so it didn't even occur to me. Heey, another idea for an airlock - opening of door 1 triggers closing of door 2, and opening of door 2 triggers closing of door 1.
@ShiftyshadowTV
@ShiftyshadowTV Месяц назад
Yeah, it would work great for small ships (or just ships with few doors). If you trigger one end of an airlock to close when the other is opened, you will have a brief time with one opening while the other is closing. In SE doors are not airtight unless completely closed, and "airflow" is instantaneous. So you'll lose all your air every time. (Unless you have an airtight block between the two doors.)
@Kain_V
@Kain_V Месяц назад
@@ShiftyshadowTV this what I was afraid, maybe I can figure out how to include timer in this chain somehow (and not complicate the use of an airlock). hmm. To turn off doors and use custom buttons? and press F on 4 buttons instead of doors

If it's for survival I think you'll want at least one small cargo container for reloads
@ShiftyshadowTV
@ShiftyshadowTV Месяц назад
I've used it a bit in survival, the connector and cockpit hold enough ammo to last through most fights. The ship tends to get shot down (or shoot down its target) before I run out.
@solidmoon8266
@solidmoon8266 Месяц назад
Did exactly this with the B-60 Bulk Freighter. Switched out the hydrogen thrusters for Ion, and added breaking thrusters too. Among other things, the end result was a ship that could travel across Space Engineers as efficiently as possible with multiple means to recharge batteries (Solar Panels, Nuclear Reactors, Wind turbines, and Hydrogen Engines). Added 2 refiners and a crafter (fully upgraded with mods, focusing on q balance of efficiency and speed/yield) into the item transfer network (which did end up up shrinking the 2 side rooms into a single cafe area and bed for 1. Added pistons to both side connectors to allow much easier docking, allowing you to dock then pull the ship in as needed. Reorganized the thrusters and removed the no longer used Hydrogen piping to create vehicle bay below the rear landing bay, allowing a ramp and land vehicle be deployed on planets. Added gun turrets to create a full around defense, mainly for asteroid defense. Added o2 generators, more batteries, an additional 2 Jump Drives. Overall it made the ship nearly a complete 1 stop shop mobile base. I didn't like dealing with Hydrogen because I didn't like dealing with an explosive tank, and also didn't like the extra resource hassle of finding Ice, especially when I couldn't find any ice for the longest time. Plus having options to switch off the reactor and recharge planetside just felt better long term for exploring. Had my small scale Mining ship I used to grind the cash in Survival to buy the B-60 and the poor ion fighters I constantly bought and salvaged to get the thruster components before I was able to find a good amount of Platnium parked on the rear landing pad, ready to go whenever.

Noob question here, so I built a welding wall and at the end of the welding the ship it just gets stuck (can't move my vehicle from the spot). Anyone know why that happens and is there a way to prevent it?
@ShiftyshadowTV
@ShiftyshadowTV Месяц назад
If the ship you are welding has a cockpit (or control seat) and that cockpit is set to "Main cockpit" as soon as it is welded it will take over. At that point you won't be able to control your projector ship. You can fix this by going into your menu and unchecking the "main cockpit" box for that block. Alternatively, it's possible to get stuck in welders (put a glass wall right up against them to prevent this).

@ShiftyshadowTV

There is, but it's not always convenient to set up, and it will only work for a specific location on a specific grid. If you wish to dock elsewhere, you'll have to set up more AI blocks for that, or do it yourself.

Overridden gyroscopes on custom turret blocks will help stabilize the turret instead of swinging around unexpectedly.
@ShiftyshadowTV
@ShiftyshadowTV Месяц назад
Interesting, seems like a lot of extra weight, and that it would slow the aiming. Weight isn't a problem on stations, but there you could share inertial tensor to stabilize. Could also just reduce the turret turning speed. On ships adding weight to subgrids tends to making moving chaotic, but if your ship is significant heavier than the subgrid you're probably ok. Might give it a shot.
