I also enjoy a 92 tornado red GTI 16v. Bought in 98. It’s forever. I lost interest after 93. Just too complicated. Big. Heavy. Over equipped. Although, if I chose a later model, it would be the MK7.
Loved this vid, I know my personal favorite, your collection is amazing, you also own my personal favorite GTIs, if I had to rank them my self it would be mk2 16v GTI 90-92, it just feels GTI, and then the mk7 as my dad just recently sold his and I loved it, just a proper car that you can’t find anything like it nowadays, then the mk1 for nostalgia
I’m curious what your maintenance routines are especially on the mk7? Ie do you change the oil more often than the factory intervals? I’ve always done my oil changes every 5000 kms with an OE filter
On the mk7, I do them every 7500km. The factory interval is 15000, so this splits it in half. I follow the factory schedule to a T, exactly as laid out in the manual, but that secondary oil change in between. I used Motul 0w20 which meets the VW 508 509 specs, and a Mann filter. The old VWs get Motul 15w50 annually, with a Mann or Mahle filter
I haven't spent a lot of time with them, but they are very different cars. The amount of advancement in tech that happened by the time the Mk4 came along, really makes them apples and oranges to the mk1 and mk2.
I generally find covers do more harm than good. Unless they are super tight fitting, they can cause a lot of damage. Or if the car is actually outside 100% in the elements, it may be worth the risk. But this is just dirt on the car. A quick wash and it will look great again. Plus no filthy cover to then deal with
Have done them many times in mk2 and mk3. I cut the old ones out, and install urethane replacements. Fairly simple. there is a bushing press to aid install of stock replacements
