Thanks for the video. Just subscribed! It would be helpful to have some type of chart that might show our "power potential". I am prior nationally-ranked athlete from a different sport. Have fairly wide shoulders and solid body rotation and a super long torso for my height so it's been complicated trying to understand the correct paddle length for my size. I am new to this activity and am paddling a sit-inside rather than a surf ski so not using a wing paddle so perhaps this isn't applicable to me?
Trying ti quantify it would be very difficult but looking at boat speed is a good indicator. For a surfski on flatwater going north of 7mph opens you up to these higher power potential and being below it means longer and larger paddles are not doing the paddler justice. What type of sit inside do you use?
I agree with Rob. I was doing some downwinds with 211.5 which I like in flat water. But it just felt like I was straining to catch the waves. I lowered it to 210 and immediately started perfroming better with less effort. It boggles my mind and I do not understand how 1 1/2 cm could make that much difference, but at least in my head it appeared to.
Good info ! OK, then how wide apart should my hands be on the paddle shaft when paddling? I was told to keep elbows bent at 90° when holding my paddle just above my head. I definitely have a slower paddling cadence compared to most paddlers I paddle with. Thank you for your videos 👍
Great job Robert! My 15yo Daughter has been sprint canoeing here in San Diego for 4 years, such an awesome sport! I tried a C2 with her once. Needless to say, I had so much trouble balancing, much less trying to take proper strokes. I will stick with my outrigger, Haha! Talk about a good way of learning how to use a proper hip-drive in paddle craft, There is no faking it in a C1! Nationals will be on Lake Lanier in GA this August if you really want to see some incredible competition in sprint Canoe/Kayak!
Turning those beasts is NO joke. Very smooth and well done lap! Our local C1 high kneeler is getting back out in his after a National Team stint many years ago and even he was really shaky after a long time off. He did our race last week in some ridiculous wind and waves, I'm not sure how he did it. My goal is to try his sometime this summer.
He will have better insight into a progression but with Christina we did knees side by side and sitting on the heels to make the balance slightly easier ha ha...
Great episode, I look forward to meeting both of you two speedsters one of these days. I'll definitely head down to Florida and Texas for an outrigger race next year.
Next weeks video will go over surfski paddle lengths and some ideas around it. Lots of variables go into it. Arm position, torso length, arm length, boat width, stroke rate and current speeds are some examples of things that will influence ideal paddle length.
Jeff! Came across this by chance and my, you have been busy! Great to see the Ohana grow in the Midwest, thanks to you. I'll see you at the Gorge buddy!
Theres always a balance. Straight is bad. Too bent is bad. There's a happy middle in there. Everyone is different with arm length proportional to their torso length too.
Hi Robert Norman. Would please suggest an amount of: 1. Repetitions, and 2. Sets, for all of these exercises here, to aid my on water training distance of 4 miles on flat water in a K1? Kindest regards.
A truly amazing presentation! Your presentation skills are terrific your knowledge skills beyond compare. And your advice is something every beginning paddler should be aware of. Thank you
Great one..very motivated as all of them...the difference absolutely was Chicken wing .. 😂 sauce...mata sanos...coming from the country I'm from...means kill the healthy ones 😂. Congratulations for all yours achievements Robert
Great podcast, miss the Bogie and Bacall,, Sharkbite Challenge and Alifia Challenge, moved on to other sports as I have sports ADHD, the only race we do every year now is the Wild Hog Canoe and Kayak race.
I've been dragging barges up and down the Tennessee River Gorge. It's improving the size of my lats and the extra income from the tugboat company has been super handy for buying new paddling gear
Love the Brian Shaw reference. 100% true as I am routinely beat by people 20 years older with great technique or someone 50 pounds lighter and better technique.
I have been practicing this on my single footwell surfski a v10Sport but for my big water race this Sunday I will use my double footwell Futura II because I still feel I may fall out of the V10S. With the Futura II I have been frustrated that I can’t get as good of a leg drive because the single legs wells are tight and the bucket is padded and harder to rotate on. After this race I will refocus with the V10S.
