TOTALLY arranged and orchestrated by the finest arranger in the music industry right up to his death in August 1998. His superb services were utilised by Sir Elton John as evidenced in this song, Rod Stewart, Frank Sinatra and very famously Barry White amongst so many others. No one did a better job arranging strings and French horns than Gene with his very distinctive sound. His list of fine work and clients is endless. Hats off to Sir Elton for hiring Gene Page to arrange this stellar song!
Wow I downloaded the audio of this performance on Napster or kazaa or whatever back in 2001 or so. I always loved it. This is my first time seeing it and it is even better than I imagined! So much passion and soul from these two.
It’s something of a deep cut, but this is one of those songs that shows off the perfect amalgamation of Bernie’s lyrics and Elton’s music. The lyrics are so deeply written with this sense of beautiful melancholy, and paired with an equally beautiful and melancholic melody it just becomes something so special. I always get chills when I listen to this song. It’s not one of the biggest of their hits but it’s just so, so beautiful.

Beings as the Soviet Republic was not exposed to much pop music in those days, they were exposed to mostly classical music concerts and knew what good piano playing should be. I feel like Elton, knowing this, played his very best.
