I had read of the throwing stick in one of the Tom Brown books 'Tracker' or 'Way of the Scout' In it I seem to recall he could throw it vertically or horizontally ... but he always put a bullwhip action at the last moment to increase the rotation. Have you ever tried doing it that way?
Actually he saved a man's life with such sticks by disarming a group of drug dealers who were about to kill the [not innocent] subject. His books are true life adventures and learnings presented in a chapter specific lesson format. Great stuff. Just saying.
