I am a Physics Teacher in Glasgow and have been busy developing a series of helpful videos for National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher Physics to help you improve you grades. Videos include past paper solutions, practical experiments, live lessons and general study advice.

I'm a keen cyclist (when I have the time to get out) and love to work with electronics and robotics. I also have an interest in Space exploration and, in 2018, realised my dream of visiting the Kennedy Space Centre - an amazing experience.

Visit my website for additional resources and, if you're finding the videos helpful, give them a LIKE and SUBSCRIBE so that you are updated when new ones are released.

Thank you!

Appreciate your clear delivery. I was wondering the purpose of the negative exponents attached to ms. They seem to vary between -1 and -2. Why is this? Am I correct that these reflect either a 10th or 100th of a second?
@MrSmithsPhysicsonline
@MrSmithsPhysicsonline 11 дней назад
ms⁻¹ stands for metres per second and are the units of speed or velocity. ms⁻² stands for metres per second per second and are the units of acceleration.

For over two days, my calculator was showing me simple subtraction & addition answers in fraction format after I cleaned it & I could not get it to show me answers in decimal format until I decided to check on RU-vid & boom, out of many useless videos I watched, this one showed me how to fix it. Thank you

I noticed chatgpt heavily favoured the first answer as the correct one. Perhaps the prompt needs further tweaking to ensure chatgpt puts some effort into randomising the correct answer
@MrSmithsPhysicsonline
@MrSmithsPhysicsonline 2 месяца назад
That's something I noticed myself but I usually randomise the answer order anyway. Still, I'll take a look at the prompt and see if I can improve on it. Thanks for the comment.

Why S=vt and S= Ut+1/2 at2 dont get same distance when acceleration 9.8
@MrSmithsPhysicsonline
@MrSmithsPhysicsonline 3 месяца назад
s=vt is used when acceleration is zero (constant velocity). If two objects have the same initial velocity but one of them is accelerating then obviously this object will travel further since it's final velocity will be greater than that of the first object.

For me the problem is finding ways to study after finishing the past papers i feel like there isnt a lot to do and i often find myself being unproductive
@MrSmithsPhysicsonline
@MrSmithsPhysicsonline 4 месяца назад
I'd certainly spend the majority of my time doing past papers but using your notes when required and paying attention to the marking scheme once you're done, noting anything that you think is important. You can always read through the theory as well which will help with the open-ended questions. Watch some of the videos (mine, of course) and, if you have access to them, there are good resources on ' Achieve' and 'Scholar'.
@flameguy3416
@flameguy3416 4 месяца назад
If you study for long stretches you get diminishing returns on that time investment, since you'll most likely just forget the middle part of your study. 25 minutes is an adequate amount of time for all of your study to be transferred to long term memory, but that 5 minute break is also very important.

If i was to write E3-E1=hf instead of E2-E1=hf would that be okay? Just wondering because it isnt written like that on the formula sheet
@MrSmithsPhysicsonline
@MrSmithsPhysicsonline 4 месяца назад
I had a quick look at the 2018 past paper and the marking scheme would allow that. Personally, I'd always choose to write it exactly as printed in the relationship sheet as long as it doesn't cause confusion. The first mark in a question like this is really for selecting the correct equation.

Keep at it and you'll get better - find some past paper questions on the topic and read the marking scheme carefully. Also, watch the 3 semiconductors videos a second or third time - the points covered are straight from the questions that have been asked before and are most likely to come up again. Good luck!

For mass could you do Ek/1/2×v^2
@MrSmithsPhysicsonline
@MrSmithsPhysicsonline 4 месяца назад
That's right - is encourage you to try all the examples in both videos so that you're happy rearranging equations. Remember also that you're sometimes best writing the equation as it's printed then substituting the values before you rearrange as you'll be guaranteed 2 marks.
