I had a 'boo boo' when I ran in mine too. I was so busy enjoying the floaty and speedy feeling of the shoe while I was running, that I hardly noticed it during the run. But the minute I stopped, boy was I aware! Such a shame as I loved running in it. I guess that I'll just have to buy some padding for the heel. I hope that does the trick as I would hate to kick this shoe into touch, it's such a joy to run in.
Well dang. Yes the Mach is EXCELLENT minus that one thing. Ugh. For what it is, I throw on a piece of moleskin then I’m good. A thing but worth the effort I figure
Thank you so much! The dad jokes just come out of no where and I just roll with it lol glad you picked up on that! I appreciate your kind words. I aim to be through to go line by line giving my 2 cents in respect for you guys and also the shoe company and design team that make the shoes happen 👍
I don't find the Novablast squishy at lower paces. I had to be running fast to feel any bounce. I also don't feel the rocker at all. It just feels flat. Must prefer the Glideride Max for my running gait.
Right on. From what I’m gathering the nb and the GlideRide do great for separate groups/gait types. I smash my midfoot and the nb responded well and for the gr max it was all about the heel strike for me. Glad the max works well for you 👍
13:44 Aha! That's an important concern for me because I am a mid-to-forefoot striker. I've had to return shoes because they did not work with my footstrike. Stellar comparison, as always. You may have to repeat this shoe(t)out when the NB5 comes out in December. Supposedly, the NB5 will have the same midsole material as the GR Max. So, you would be comparing apples to apples. Thanks, Jason.
Thank you so much! I know I get into the weeds with some of these reviews and comparisons but it’s this right here that motivates me! I’m happy I covered that. That said, I’ll definitely circle back to the nb4 when the nb5 comes rocking the ff blast max +\- eco. I wonder if they’ll mix it differently than the gr max or figure out a geometry trick 🤔
Absolutely! The box says beige green. I know I said pale moss. There’s a good selection of these neutral colorways to choose from. My wife likes fun colors and is making fun of my old man colorways. Oh well. Maybe I’ll surprise her
That’s probably true I find myself making multitaskers out of these shoes running, working, errands, dog walks you name it. I figured go with colors that make sense there. That said, I’d just as soon show up in my bright yellow or green shoes. I don’t mind 😊
Greetings from Ukraine!!!! Thanks for your channel and works!!! The best channel for all sneakers nerds))) Can you do max max cushion shoes comparison (Puma MagMax vs New Balnce More v5 vs Hoka Skyward X) ?
Wow! Hello there. Thank you so much. That would be a great MEGA MAX MATCH for sure. Those are all great shoes. That’ll be a great video-I’ll keep it in mind and might have us a little big shoe shoe(t) out!
Yes this foam combo takes a good bit to break in. It’s actually good out of the box but really starts to open up as things move along. It reminds me of one of the mattresses that come vacuum sealed then after breathing for a bit feels great 😆
Aha nice! Not nitpick at all. Redwing boots are made about an hour away from me. Great boots! I figured started speaking in metric as well as US as I appreciate my global audience 😊
Thanks for the review, I was thinking of buying this shoe and nothing here has dissuaded me. I like the idea of a non-plate shoe for my long runs and maybe even for longer races.
Absolutely. It’s the non plate plus the foam really. The upper is next level. It feels like it’ll survive a thousand miles. For the price, it’s not a bad package. Pricey but might be all a person needs. Just consider the fit about the toes (that was my original beef) once that’s sorted then it’s a fever dream
I’ve been thinking about that 😊 but now I’m wondering about the 27. I know I dragged my feet on this and the Hurricane but I’m interested in the 27 especially to compare the foam and feel to the last few ASICS down here 😊
Thank you for your response! Definitely a big contestant for my next pair of trainers as a start ramping up milage for my freshman year of track and field+cross country
It’s true. What I see is this color and a black one. Yup. ASICS is dragging it out just like the last set. If what they do is like their historical output is a really good color way in the spring 🤷♂️
I've been recommended these for my first half-marathon next year, and I think that I may have to give them a go. I've yet to hear a negative review of them yet.
Thank you! Hmm-I can’t. I asked my wife (also a runner) actually if she’d check them out. She might do that but we’ll see. Don’t wait on me to make a move but you bring up an excellent point. Might have some new insights here on the channel 🤞
It's certainly very different, and it's nice to see originality in the industry. Although I'm not sure if I would run in something that looks like a golf shoe 🤔 Still, if it works, it works I guess.
lol yes it’s definitely different! So different really hard to think of anything outside of MTC that is doing what they’re doing. It’s like every detail of their shoes is purpose driven to carve their own path. Innovative. Does look like some golf shoes but feels good at running 😊 always appreciate you
I know you plan a shoe(t)-out between NB3 & NB4. But what do you think about the NB4 vs. the GR Max? I'm still very enamored with the GR Max, but I'm still unsure where it would fit into an Asics rotation unless it replaces the NB4 altogether. Just a thought.
Hey there. The nb4 vs gr max makes total sense! 2 shoes that are slightly different imo but does have some overlap in key areas. I hear ya: I think the max/nb4 might serve the same purpose for 2 separate groups if necessary. Thank you!
Flipadoodle? I hate it when people use technical jargon! 😉 Very thorough and entertaining review, fella 👍 Any chance that you could give the shoe weights in metric too, please? Cheers....🙂
Haha right on. These words just come out of nowhere. I simply can’t be too serious-life’s too short and I imagine that we’re just sitting down and having a chat about shoes and it’s lovely. I appreciate that you liked the review 😊 thank you pointing out the metric side of things. I’ll remember that going forward. I’ll also try to consider that with the shoe sizes as well. Thanks so much!
Right on. I have the big glasses made for active people too and they function well for running but I probably wouldn’t go past that if it can be helped. I had these Ventures for a few weeks now and have done quite a bit with them running, yard work and they stay put. They also can dress down well when running errands. They’re super light weight and balanced. The ear pieces aren’t tight at all and a lot of the grasp is at the nose. Working better than I thought for my sweaty face
I have had both shoes and maybe it’s just me but the forefoot foam of the Max feels like it completely compresses under load. I’m 182 lbs and a midfoot striker but on longer runs I find myself intentionally heel striking to avoid the discomfort.
Hey there. I’m 6 foot 175 and a typical midfoot striker and complete agree. The max wasn’t really that pleasant at mid foot and almost bottomed out (not painful just not super agreeable) however, for me the heel is where it’s at. All of a sudden it’s a master shoe with the rearfoot landings plus my times dropped. The gr3 felt a bit more balanced but the max had the rearfoot redemption. That said, I’m not really thrilled to change/question my gait as the shoe prefers and aim for the other way around. But here we are in a world full of choices when it comes to running shoes and that’s for the most part a good thing for now. Thanks
I think that this is a pretty mediocre shoe actually. I have kept it in my rotation for easy runs, but for everything else it really leaves a lot to be desired. Or maybe it is just me.🤔
I hear ya. The shoe does have a flat affect for the most part but does come alive at certain paces and more specifically foot placement (midfoot for me) it seemed nice at easy paces and for daily runs. The outsole actually did well-really durable. Will be interesting to see what they do with the next version as for now it’s a bit of a crossover/in between shoe
I tried these on last weekend and found them extremely odd for an everyday shoe. I was looking for a good walking shoe, but one that I could wear everywhere. I can see how the rocking motion of the sole would be great for walking and forward propulsion but after that I could not see them for everyday all day use. The rocking motion felt like I was very unstable and about to fall over. I'm glad I saw this video and heard about the hot spots because that is something you just can't easily pick up on when trying things on in a store. Outside of those hot spots, I could see these shoes being pretty good if you wore different shoes everywhere and only pulled these out when you arrived at your walking destination. I ended up going with a different pair of Keens for my walking shoes, the Keen Versacore Speed, and they feel great.
Thanks for the comment. I agree it’s a good concept but misses the mark for me. The rocker outsole is central to my foot and I agree does give a bit of balance off put. It’s supposed to feel propulsive but unless you land just so it feels like the shoe is fighting you. I’m happy that my review helped point out some potential issues for you. My little toes still seem to get wrapped up in the lateral toebox and it’s still quite noticeable. It was an expensive well built shoe so I’m still wearing it for work and what not. I wear thick socks that help. I looked at the versacore based on your comment: that looks like a decently built shoe and happy to hear you had a good experience. I wonder how it compares to the wk400? Thanks!
That’s a very reasonable worry. Fortunately didn’t Happen with me but had me thinkin. There are other options out there with wider landing platforms to help with that 👍
The nb4 is different. That a really lined budget bounce shoe. Nb4 really nice for forefoot and midfoot and just ok at heel strike. Nb4 good for speed work. GlideRide really great at long slow distance and heel strike and does good with midfoot. Not great at forefoot. I wouldn’t consider the gr max for tempo or speed but it can be done.
Where the R1 and the S1 look like legit running shoes, the P1 looks more like a lifestyle shoe, IMO. Is it fair to say that the P1 is the stability version of the S1?
Howdy! 🤠 Fair point as these definitely can work in a lifestyle setting. For me, they work well as runners. I am liking the medial and lateral cradling of my forefoot. It’s a nice bit. I don’t have the S1 yet but I ordered them so that I can check those out and compare. I had the same question. I’ll wait to answer once I have it. Mainly as the goflow might be different sans 3D archrail. Plus, s1 has the zero sag and p1 does not. Great stuff. I’ll also be using these for non running duty too. They look sharp
I just went for another pair of the 3s for a daily trainer + long run shoe. It's so versatile and my favorite shoe of all time. I really don't want any more weight and don't need the extra cushion so seemed a bit unnecessary to get the Max. Is the Max similar in terms of flexibility length-wise? Some reviews were saying that it's now less flexible...
The 3 is great and it’s even better now that it’s on sale. Sad to see it go though. For the stiffness I’ll check on that later and get back to you for a definitive answer but if I recall the max wasn’t as flexible but the foam was softer and thicker.
Thank you for your review. This is precisely the type of test I wanted to see before buying a shoe. I don’t have a lot of money but I still want to get back into running. I need something that I can take on my commute to work whilst also still being able to go on a run. I had a look at their cloud tilt shoe, but that is more intended for walking and daily wear only. I need one shoe that can do it all. Will head to the store to try it out.
Thank you so much. Your words mean a lot to me and they are touching. Truly-thank you. That’s what I was thinking when making this type of video/review is that of using the thing for many uses and seeing how it holds up. I completely understand focusing on one shoe that works for you. Working, running, going out-all of it. The Cloudsurfer next is not as expensive as many of the shoes, the quality is on point, it looks good and performs well for running and walking. I did standing type duties at my job for many of the days during the review but found it wasn’t amazingly comfortable for that. I only had the factory insert so that could be modified if needed. It also wasn’t the most breathable but anyways it’s a decent option for an all around shoe. There are more options out there and I do plan on making more of this type of video to fully explore a shoe aside from strictly a running standpoint. Again, thank you so much
Great question. I get it. The drops are the same on paper but if anything I would say the drop feels less on the max. Feels more like a 4 than a 6. Could be the foams, plate, geometry or a combo of those plus minus something else. Still both are fun shoes built for the long run. Thanks
Fair question. I picked up the 3 to round out the GlideRide rotation for me and put in a review on it as I feel it’s something that ASICS did that is kind of a standalone category. It adds depth and breadth to the company and the sport. It’s also because the GR Max is on the scene and provides scope for comparison and contrast. Big differences of course but a lot has happened since 2022. Finally, it’s still a really good show that’s still available to buy on clearance all over the interwebs for those looking to save a bit of $. Thanks so much for :)
Comprehensive comparison contrast as always. In fairness to the GR3, it's been out for four years, and shoe tech has moved forward. The GR Max is the epitome of Asics' tech.
Thank you so much and thank you for commenting as always. I believe this gr3 was a 2022 shoe but the GlideRide was a mold breaker back when it first arrived and stayed that way. They improved so much and it’s just a nice solid reliable shoe. The max is that PLUS all the latest ASICS has going in that space. I agree with you that it’s the epitome of ASICS presently. It’s one of the nicest shoes I’ve worn in a while
Hey there. These would work with a wider foot. It also could hold another insert in exchange for what’s there now. It does have some decent arch support
Nice design. I think I might have seen their Kickstarter campaign. I would have considered supporting their campaign except when you get as old as I am, you have to rely on presciptions. I wear a pair of Oakley running glasses that are progressive and Transitions. So, when it's dark o'clock in the morning when I start my long run, the lenses are clear. By the time I finish, the sun is up and the lenses are dark.
Roger that. I’ve worked with them for several months now-good folks over there. That’s nice that there are comfortable lenses for all runners. Transitions make A lot of sense. I see VALLON also does prescriptions too tinyurl.com/5n7hsudt here. Just FYI. Yup-lots more dark in the morning nowadays
