Wow dang great workmanship from the initial survey, strip down, build up, through final coat sealer on the cat hauls by you two ! Jan through July, seven months in with the Wilson cat on the hard, under the weather conditions and the COVID at Rebak marina ! You two shall be granted the Sailors Perseverance Award by Poseidon himself ! Always be safe and sane out there on the seas and at ports of call !

Americans call your bottom - your butt. Most people call it a bum or bottom. If you didn’t have a bottom to sit on you would have no excuse to do any work. It’s simply an English “”NONSENSE”” joke about the word but.

Thank you for posting this, there's nothing better than watching it happen compared to looking at exploded diagrams. I drain my trans oil every year, looking for telltale water coming from that drain bolt at the bottom. Each time I wonder if it is time to replace those seals. What prompted you to replace those seals?

WELL, THE SAIL DRIVES WERE OUT OF THE BOAT WHILE THE ENGINES WERE BEING STRIPPED OF RUST AND PAINT AND THE SAIL DRIVE DIAPHRAGMS WERE WELL WORN AND NEEDED REPLACING. LIKE YOU I HAD NO WATER IN THE OIL BUT I HAD ALL THE PARTS READY SO I JUST DID IT BECAUSE IT WAS EASIER TO DO ON THE HARD STAND. THERE WERE MANY THINGS I DID WHILE I WAS OUT OF THE WATER

JUST A SIDE NOTE: I PUT ON SMALL DIAMETER FITTINGS AND THE PRESSURE WAS TO MUCH FOR THE 12 VOLT PUMPS AND I HAVE BURNT OUT WIRING AND ALSO THE PUMP. I HAVE SINCE GONE TO A LARGER SIZE HOSE AND FITTINGS.. I STILL HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE WIRING GETTING TO HOT SO I JUST USE THE PUMP UNTIL MY HAND IS WARM ON THE PUMP AND STOP IT FOR A REST TILL ITS COOL
@CapeBojeador

Anyone doing this job may want to first think about draining the oil before disassembling. I wouldn't recommend using steel screw drivers to prise apart aluminium mating surfaces. I pack the space between the seals with grease.

@SAILINGWILSON

ABOUT ONE LITRE IN 10 SECONDS BUT I REST THE PUMP BECAUSE I HAVE FOUND THESE 12 VOLT CHINESE PUMPS GET REALLY HOT.. THAT MEANS 30 LITRES IN 20 MINUTES IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME. TRYING TO DO IT QUICKER I BURNT OUT A PUMP I HAVE SINCE GONE TO LARGER DIAMETER HOSES AND FITTINGS.

I would investigate permanently sandwiching with permanent gaskets, two fibreglass support plates one inside and one outside the tank, and both surrounding/crossing that fuel tank access hole, that would remove the dip/indentation, and also raise the "temporaty" seal for that metal "feed" plate, to a level above the tank exterior level. just a thought cheers
@SAILINGWILSON
@SAILINGWILSON 2 года назад
Great minds think alike. I have some 20 mm phlexi glass strips I was going to epoxy them around the feed system like a tic tac toe shape to the edges of the tank. As to the inside I’ll wait and see if the outside does the job or mucks it up. The bolt heads are on the inside. Not sure how I would get to them and the thread gives me little to play with. I always think things thru and Rob Andersen the diesel mechanic will be my bouncing board. Thanks for the advice and a few things I didn’t think of.

what to do about the part where the chokes are that you cannot paint now? Do you save some coppercoat paint for later when its ready to be lifted and touch up later?
@SAILINGWILSON
@SAILINGWILSON 3 года назад
I have one kit of CC left over for the eight stands. I have had the yard move the smaller stands and am doing the epoxy and then the copper coat over a few days. One week before I splash I will pay extra for the travel lift to move the main stands and add four more stands and support beams under the lower deck to make sure they spread the load of the boat. The reason is there are no structural bulk heads that are weight bearing and even the keels are not weight bearing so the extra supports are a must. I will abrade the CC a few days before splash as well. I’m giving a week or more likely two days to let the copper Coat cure before I splash. Copper Coat needs time to cure. It’s not like anti foul were you paint where the stands were while the travel lift supports the boat a few hours before splashing. Those last few hours on the travel lift will be to abrade the copper coat where the remaining stands were. Does that answer your question?
@SAILINGWILSON
@SAILINGWILSON 3 года назад

Thanks for the offer, and yes I've read the noshoes article. I've contacted Racheal over at Seaspray about this cat. The problem is the pandemic, which makes a logistical nightmare to view her. I live in Canada and so getting halfway around the world is rather difficult. Finding a crew to deliver is equally difficult. I suspect many boat sales are frustrating these days!
@SAILINGWILSON
@SAILINGWILSON 3 года назад
@@cudabeenios1 first things first. Do not buy unseen. 2nd a survey is a must when your spending that sort of money. If you work then you can’t quarantine but if you do come to Malaysia then have your list of boats to look at prepared. Rachael has a number of boats listed. Are you that keen on electric motors? If you bring it back to Canada shipping it would be 20k Canadian. Then once it’s there powering through solar is limited. There are other considerations that you need to way up. The boat is a proven blue water catamaran with a fussy current owner. He maybe sailing back to Australia??? I’m not sure about that??? The good thing is Langkawi is a tax free island. Balancing distance cost and desire can be a pain. Are there any American boats in your price range
@cudabeenios1
@cudabeenios1 3 года назад
@@SAILINGWILSON I completely agree about viewing in person and a survey, the marine insurance company that I've been advised by insists on a survey including hard rig age limits. Canada is not a cat rich country, some Canadians have cats but south of the 47. There is literally one cat on the market (east coast of Canada) that is within our budget here in Quebec city, a Leopard 38 that we will be looking at on July 24, however a survey from 2018 that the broker sent shows hull degradation. This will be the third cat we've seen in over one year and we declined the other two. There are a couple for sale on the west coast of Canada, but they might as well be in Malaysia for nautical miles away. I'm not sure why but Australia seems to have some attraction or custom builders that fabricate aluminum cats (Bauxite mines maybe!) and I like Al boats, mind you the welding I've seen on any Al boat is really, really bad. But they seem to stay together! I'm aware of the galvanic issues and mitigation procedures and electrical anomalies. Sundancer caught my eye for that exact reason, the electric propulsion (generated of course) the system is a little dated. Years ago I talked with Dave Tither who designed that system, I was at a defense trade show in Virginia (this guy is beyond smart). When I saw Soloman as the motors on the ad, I knew exactly what it was about and those ST30's are built like a brick shit house. Anyways I digress. Regardless this pandemic is certainly putting pressure on many things including boat sales...larger boats anyways. I really appreciate your correspondence, and I find it so cool that you are there at Rebak lounging about. Let me know of how it goes down there! I'm not sure if corresponding on RU-vid like this is frowned upon, so my email is g.reid@hotmail.com . I've six more years to be in a retired state, one blink as they say. BTW my name is Garrett Reid, nice to meet you!
