I wish there were more resources like this to explore such rich cultural history. However, I felt there might have been a slight misinterpretation. ‘Nunc obdurat’ meaning ‘now it oppresses’ and ‘et tunc curat’ meaning ‘and then it soothes’ are correctly translated. ‘Ludo mentis aciem,’ on the other hand, literally means ‘I play with the sharpness of the mind,’ emphasizing intellectual engagement rather than doing something as one wishes (‘ad libitum’). I think there may have been a confusion with ‘ad libitum,’ which doesn’t align with the intended meaning of ‘ludo mentis aciem.

It is an exquisitely beautiful melody. I rather suspect that the original lyrics made perfect sense, and that as the song was passed from generation to generation, something got lost and jumbled along the way. We are left with just a sad sense of loss and longing in hearing the song, but not really knowing exactly why we feel that way. Interesting information on the background, good job on your research.

Bardcore is/was more like a sort of a "cosmetic" thing, sort of wrapping modern songs into a more "medievalish" sound. There's no attempt at going to a deep, structural level: it might be likeable to the ears, but it's not historically accurate, still neither has ever wanted to be. To me anyway the OG bardcore is Alan A'Dale the Rooster 😄😄.

"why even back in the medieval era" 1. they were much more exposed to fate than we are. Some things which are today a minor medical problem were back then deadly. 2. In medieval Europe there was a general feeling of vulnerability by fate. More than in other cultures of those times (which were no less vulnerable to fate). It was more about that "life will suck" than "life can suck".

Many podcasts and even professionally produced radio shows from the CBC or NPR have a habit of playing background music while the talent speaks over this noise. Just for the hell of it, why not try speaking with no background music. It makes it much easier to follow your story and think about the last thing you said -- thus every you say will lead to your last breath.

The number "seven" in certain versions had a huge historical significance. Seven years was the length of an indentured servitude contract.

In the line "meine Töchter sollen dich warten schön" , which you translated as "my daugthers will gladly wait on you" probably was meant differently originaly. Whilst "warten" nowaays in german is mostly ussed as "to wait", it can also mean "to look after someone or something". This usage of the word has become old fashioned by now but is probably what Goethe wanted to say. To the overall interpretation I might add that the son might have a fever dream (that was my teachers interpretation, as this ballade is a standard in german literaure and usually taught in school) that could explain why the father is in such a hurry as he has his sick, feverish child in his arms, maybe he´s trying to get to a doctor or some place where the xon could rest from his illness.

There were no meaningful copyright laws in early America, the State censorship bureau gave permissions to publish within that state. Intellectual property would travel from state to state, each state claiming its own authentic source, each slightly different from the other. Tunes were often written in four or seven shape note systems taught by itinerant, nameless music teachers.

The River 'Shannon' in Ireland is named after the sole 'Male' pre-Christian God figure in Ireland. All other rivers are named after female deities. It drains two thirds of the island. It's the longest river in Ireland and Britain. It's often referred to as An t-Sionann Dubh/An Shennon Doo/The Dark Shannon, for the huge volume of water that drains out into the Atlantic Ocean. Early Spanish explorers moving up the East Coast from Florida encountered tall, fair-skinned people in what might now be called Alabama, who warned the Spaniards against the savage natives. It has been speculated that these people were descendants of Irish people who migrated to the Americas many hundreds of years earlier.

Classical pianists perform the notes that someone else has worked out for them; often a hundred years previously or more. Jazz pianists compose (once improvising away from the given melody), arrange and perform simultaneously in real time on the gig. The chord symbols each present hundreds of alternative choices with respect to how chord tones are distributed around the keyboard and which may be altered, added or omitted. To do this they need to understand music theory at it's most complex and to compute a score in their own heads many times per second all the time they are playing. In addition they need to be musically inventive, responsive to other players in the band and to exercise artistic judgement and good taste while being supremely virtuosic on the keys. They also need to have a thorough appreciation of the work of the many jazz greats which have preceded them over the past century. Scary? You bet! However, jazz musicians get the satisfaction of creating new music every time they play. Classical musicians miss out on this. And, don't forget, the jazz repertoire has most of the best tunes. Sadly, the majority of jazz musicians are poorly paid for pursuing their art so maybe one should stick with the Chopin.

Sorry to Virginia's Shenandoah folks - but it isn't anything to do with Virginia. There's a town called Shenandoah in Iowa. It is sited on the bank of the Missouri River and is reportedly named for a native american. The song is about voyagers on the Missouri River.
@lerossignol1731
@lerossignol1731 5 месяцев назад
The town of Shenandoah in Iowa was called Fair Oaks until 1870. It was renamed when it was platted and as it grew due to the railroads. The song predates the town's new name by a large margin.

Thanks. I love the song. I tried many times to research it and never felt I got it. Now with your interpretation, I know why. I'm not slow after all.😀The thing that makes the most sense is "Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter". So I conclude it to be a love song of perhaps one of those trappers you mentioned trying to gain approval from Indian Cheif Shenandoah.

This is is my translation of the ancient classic... Sumer is icumen in anonymous Middle English poem, circa 1260 AD loose translation/interpretation by Michael R. Burch Summer is a-comin’! Sing loud, cuckoo! The seed grows, The meadow blows, The woods spring up anew. Sing, cuckoo! The ewe bleats for her lamb; The cows contentedly moo; The bullock roots, The billy-goat poots ... Sing merrily, cuckoo! Cuckoo, cuckoo, You sing so well, cuckoo! Never stop, until you're through! Sing now cuckoo! Sing, cuckoo! Sing, cuckoo! Sing now cuckoo! The French fur traders went far and wide. They trapped all along the Missouri, from the Mississippi valley to the Missouri headwaters along the continental divide. Sacagawea was married to a French trapper/trader, Charbonneau, and helped guide Lewis and Clark westward up the Missouri. Sea shanty, up the Rolling River, barges, large canoes, poling, rowing, all take some coordination. Makes sense. I never understood how the Shenandoah River had anything to do with the "Wide Missouri". Now the song makes sense, and even though the Shenandoah Valley is beautiful, it has nothing to do with the song itself. Thank you for your explanation.

Studied this poem in german literature class in college, and listened to the Schubert adaptation. We translated “Kron’ und Scheif” crown and shroud. which may be taking liberties but seems correct since the father sees “Ein Nebelstreif” a streak of mist/fog

@nstix2009xitsn

@joyspearman6358 For the obvious reason: We're the only nation on the face of the Earth with America in our name. There is no nation of "North America," or "South America." Stop playing as if you didn't know the difference between a country and a continent. It's not cute.
