Next Step Ministries is a 501c3 non-profit organization committed to helping students grow closer to Christ through a life-changing, one-week mission trip. Students have the opportunity to work on challenging construction projects. The Construction Department understood that putting volunteers and staff on construction projects without the proper training wasn't helping anyone. This video series is meant to help train those who are interested in learning more about construction and using those skills to serve alongside a community in need.

I really like your videos. I'm a novice carpenter and preparing to build and attach stairs to my deck. My question is at 5:40 in the video you're nailing the 2x4 to the bottom of the string and holding the 2x4 flush to the outside stringer. Is there a reason the two middle stringer are outside the notch you cut and not flush with the bottom of the stringer like the outside? Can see when you place steps against deck and floor that the two middle stringers aren't flush with the floor like the outside stringers. Thanks!

Those toe nails look like they had about 1/8 of an inch grab. Humpty and dumpty up there building a roof.

In my humble opinion, if you made sure your walls were straight and parallel you would not have to run rafters long. Never cut anything in the air that you can cut on the ground. Also, putting the roof sheating on first makes putting on the sub facia easier. Just an observation.

Wow... Get a real hammer and drop your sub facia down over an inch so your plywood comes down on top evenly. What total garbage this video is.

It's always a mistake to put your hangers on before your rafters.. the tops will be a little out of plane

Framer here : make your walls nice and straight. I use an extendable level and go from plate to plate. I don't sight it fir the most part I just level it.. if your walls are crappy your rafters will look crappy and not fit right on the ridge

If your rafter tails extend more than 14 to 16 ft the chalk line will sag down the rafters. Hang a dry line under the rafters and mark each tail. Perfectly straight allowing for wind. I prefer a Squangle for this rather than a speed square.

Thanks for the video. Very informative. Question.... what if you took two normal 2x6 joist hangers and hung them on the ridge upside down and nailed your rafters from the side. Crazy idea?
