Thank you for the valuable information I made infused oil with sun flower oil and dried rosemary to use it on my scalp and hair only. Is it safe to use ?
Have a question about the oil infusion length. I have sped up the process by putting the jar in my instant pot under the yogurt setting for 8 hours. I am trying to eliminate the 6 week process. What are your thoughts?
I couldn’t find option to join your new membership channel. The join button was nowhere to be found. Please help me, as I’d love to learn more about how to add preservative to my hydrosol. Thank you
Hi Dr Leo, I have never done the infusion. I see that usually people use dry herbs rather than the fresh ones. May I know if such procedure applies to dry herbs as well?
Dry herbs has lower change to be contaminated than fresh ones. However fresh herbs are often used to make infused oil for example garlic. Also pesto is normally made with fresh herbs. If the prepared products were not stored correctly this would encourage growth of the bacteria and the bacteria will cause problems when people consume them.
@LeTimeLeo What is the safety procedure recommended for oil infusion using dry plants. I might want to make a canlendula infused oil using dried flowers.
Based on the Idaho study, the four herbs concerned of food poisoning are fresh garlic, rosemary, basil and oregano. Watch this video for guidance of making calendula infused oil for external use. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wGp4c8k2_oY.htmlsi=ftUYO5kbHL9mB1Zh
I've made similar things but with herbs and so forth I can't see any reason why all the properties of coffee wouldn't be in there , when you sip it does it have caffeine?
Great information Dr. Leo. Newbie question, do you know if eco preservative is effective for hydrosols and will it keep my hydrosol toner safe and stable?
The origano hydrosol I made did not have a change in colour. I have made thyme hydrosol twice. Both had a change in colour. I have made lotion using emulsifier which does not require heating up. I realised that lotion made using hydrosol does not grow mold despite without preservative.
Hi Dr Leo, the thyme hydrosol I made was initially like yours, but after a few days, the colour became yellowish, although it was clear. May I know if this is normal?
There two possibilities. Some thyme can change into yellow due to oxidation during storage. This is normal and also happens to oregano. The other possibility is contamination from bottle. Contamination can be avoided by good cleaning with alcohol before bottling hydrosols. If hydrosol goes bad, you may notice its smells change.
Love your videos thank you. I made my first hydrosol today and everything seemed to work perfectly BUT…I was afraid to take it apart and clean it for fear of pressure in the column. I waited for hours for it to cool down before taking it apart. Could you please create a short video on the safe and correct way to end a distillation process? Many thanks.
I have a pretty challenging question. I have looked everywhere and can’t seem to get a good answer prior to making tinctures. Some herbs require decarboxylation to get certain benefits I would like to know what other herbs require decarboxylation and what components will be released at what temperatures through that process. Can you guide me to a good book on the subject for an intelligent layman?
First I love your question regarding decarboxylation on herbs. Decarboxylation is a process to remove acidic group from an organic chemical. It becomes more known due to CBD making process. Actually heat treatment of herbs has been there for long time. One popular example is green tea. Also many herbs were baked before putting into cooking process which can enhance their flavor. I will find more literatures and make a video of it.
I just received my new LT3000. The column is slightly flattened in one small plane about .5 inches wide along the height of the column. Is this a problem? Should I return it? Thanks for your wonderful videos.
