I guess that is good that there are still people that support slowly dying professions like luthiers, but it’s so easy to setup your guitar (including sanding neck, shimming, levelling frets etc) and I don’t really get why people are not doing it themselves.
i have a jazzmaster and was always under the impression that the rhythm circuit was for just rhythm and comping and you switched to the lead circuit for lead even when playing jazz
Mogami cables are the best IMO. Used in studios and by pro touring musicians. Price is quite high - although comparable with other mainstream brand 'high-end' offerings (and nowhere near the ridiculous cost of audiophile cables). MH Services in Milton Keynes (no affiliation - I've just used them before and I was very impressed) can make you exactly what you need as a custom order - cable lengths, colours, jack options, etc. They feel like they'll last forever. I haven't had a single what fail or crackle yet.
That sounds great for a solid body jazz guitar. I'm not sure why the Telecaster is more used for jazz than the Jazzmaster as this sounds more suited to jazz than a Telecaster. Great playing.
I'm a huge Jazzmaster fan and I play Jazz on it for 15 years, the sound is reacher and more subtle than Telecaster but the fact is those guitars are special in many ways and less plug 'n play (especially because of the stock bridge).
With my eyes closed I got confused as to witch was witch. You've got me considering another purchase, but i could use some help convincing upper management ( the wife ) 😂
Maybe it's confirmation bias, but I swear the archtop has just a bit more dimension or - brace yourself - depth, especially on single notes, but for all the reasons you so astutely pointed out, the JM holds its own. The string change - and rhythm circuit - make all the difference. I'm just astounded that at pretty much the same price point as Harmony's recent revamps, Fender wasn't (transl. 'weren't' for the King's English crowd) able to reach a similar arrangement with Mono bags, which rival most HSCs for those not familiar.
It does have a bit more depth to it (the archtop), but this JM really gets a full jazz tone. I’ve been looking at a mono case. Forgot how expensive they are! That said, my archtop mono case has been a fantastic purchase.
I always take my guitars to a very capable repairer a few miles away. I knew that he'd done a refret for Scott Gorham (Thin Lizzy) and some work on a '50s Les Paul owned by David Gilmour so I was confident enough. I would always check their website for endorsements and examples of their work (some repairers will show write-ups and photos of work they've done). That said - for a sticky / glossy neck I'd just give it a rub with fine wire wool. Easy job to be honest, did it myself to a Les Paul Deluxe, took 5 minutes and worked nicely. By the way - nice to hear One Note Samba there!
Sounds like a good person to take guitars to. That’s all the luthier I use did, nothing drastic. Love a bit of One note Samba! Fun tune to play rhythm too.
Sounds great, as is your playing! I have a Nash Telecaster with a Bigsby. It originally had a Lollartron in the neck pickup, but I replaced it with a Lollar Imperial Low-Wind humbucker. I really like it for a jazz sound with the neck pickup. But it is a heavy bugger between the weight of the guitar itself and the Bigsby. Wondering how heavy is the Jazzmaster?
I’ve never tried a Nash. Would love to one day. I’d like to try their take on a 52 tele. I’ve not weighed the guitar, but it’s pretty light. Not much difference to my tele (which has a belly cut)
Hi Andy I own two MIJ Jazzmasters one I changed the pickups for Fenders USA pickups which really made a difference.the other one perfect no changes . Guess I am lucky living in Japan! Cool Jass guitar Andy!
I remember when the fender jazzmaster guitar made the scene. It bombed! Today, the fender jazzmaster does not have to stand up to the Archtop Guitar tone. Reason Ibanez jazz guitars are brighter than the Archtop Guitar. So, having a fender jazzmaster in your arsenal is a good choice. "Shut the hell up!" Remember, when the fender jazzmaster made its debut, 4-inch-wide Archtop Guitars were the choice of the day. Also, the tone knob was turned off or down to two. That is right, no tone! The evolution of jazz!
I’m quite knocked out by this guitar. Gigged it a couple times now and it really sounds fat. What do you think? Ps. This is not an affiliate video. Bought this guitar with my own money!
Really excellent video... I'd been looking for a good "jazz" Jazzmaster video for a long time... Big bonus was, I'm a fan a Japanese guitars. Is this a current model ?
@@jazzguitarwithandy I have one - just amazing. Sorry if you've already answered that elsewhere but is it the case that you prefer the Jazzmaster over the Telecaster for jazz ?
@@Uuur10 I’m feeling inclined to say yes, but the Jazzmaster really needs the rhythm Circuit and heavy strings. I think the jazzmaster with that set up is better than a tele.
Interesting. That is sweet tone. I've always ignored this one because I thought the body was too awkward, the top too busy with gadgets and you can't adjust the P90s....but I this was a surprise. I'll have to do some closer research.
If it's a faux tortoise shell guard please specify. If you call it a "tortoise shell" guard we might think it's a real tortoise shell guard and real tortoise shell guards aren't good. Let the tortoises know you're thinking about them, although what we used to call "tortoise shell" was actually sea turtle shell
Most would know it’s not real tortoise shell….Fender doesn’t do that. It’s not necessary to state such. I think you’re the only one that thought this. Also tortoises never know we are thinking about them.😂😂😂
@@greysuit17 I don't base my thinking on what "everyone else" thinks. That's not, you know, thinking. I know "most" know that Fender doesn't use real tortoise shell, but this is for the benefit of someone who might not know.
Just looked at listings for it and it’s listed as 4 ply tortoiseshell. Not really thought about it before. Thankfully not the real thing! I think it’s just become assumed that is the case nowadays. You’ve made me wonder whether anyone actually makes pick guards or picks out of them these days. Hopefully not!
How about "Grooveyard" by pianist Carl Perkins? I must admit I haven't tried to transcribe it, but it sounds relatively easy (as long as you don't try to play it exactly like Joe Pass).
My wife actually asked me " what song is that" while i was playing the first exercise. It worked !! Lol. I really like your teaching methods and style. Very thorough. Thanks for this and look forward to getting through all of these and your great breakdowns of standards. Cheers mate. 🍺
Nice, love the header on this one, the whole arrangement is really nice. Has kind of a big band feel to it and with the grips you've chosen this will be a challenge at first and a ton of fun to learn for sure. ~Cheers! 😊🎼🎸🎵🏆
Another excellent and well-explained lesson. Thank goodness for you Andy, I had just about given up on this jazz thing but now it’s starting to make sense. Cheers.
Perfect. Very helpful, especially for someone like myself who I would describe as a low to middle intermediate player. This is a constant learning process. Well done.
