These are great cars if you are prepared to put up with some issues in these older cars. Such as MCU1 cars the media computer can fail so you really need to pay for the MCU2 upgrade which will transform the car. The PTC heater is a common failure as are the daytime running lights Universal joints on the X fail and tyre wear on the inside of the tyres which is not easy to see. You covered the 12v battery issues common failure as the weather gets colder.. The list goes on. Tesla introduced this model in 2015 and it hasn't really changed other than software and some hardware. Short trips round town use more energy definitely longer trips for EV's are much better
This car is very inferior to a German counterpart, no comparison. I've had two Model S's and a Panamera, there is no comparison between quality, features, service, support, etc. Teslas are fun off the line and the app is cool. Their software is quite good but so many of the "car" bits are terrible quality.
When you’ve entered Sheffield as your destination, it’s added the Warwick supercharger to get you to Sheffield. To add Banbury in the route, use the “edit trip” button then add stop…search and add the Banbury waypoint and drag it in the order you want. That’s it i think
@@DJBaldPaul There should be an ellipses just beside end trip which when selected brings up the functionality to edit trip. It’s such an integral part of the navigation trip planner and should be there.
I'm in the US and bought a 2017 Model X 100D with 93k miles for $29k, compared to others I've seen for sale I think it was a good deal. Our family really likes it, taken it on a few trips and like you I don't think the supercharging speed is a hinderance at all - in fact it makes the trip a lot more relaxing and enjoyable. I thought it was funny your kids were embarrassed about being dropped off with Falcon doors - the first thing I asked my son (10y/o) when looking at it was "are you going to embarrassed if we pull up to carpool with these doors?", he said no of course not, my daughter (almost 12) isn't either. I was pretty embarrassed having people look at me though! My wife doesn't like the attention either :).
Good vid I’m not a massive fan of ev’s, but cool tech. I recently purchased my next long term car and did seriously consider a Tesla, but big issue with any EV for myself is I wouldn’t be able to easily charge at home, and are grid in the north isn’t great to rely on it. And being in a remote area I need something I can really apon. Also we’ve just come back of are first long trip in my new to me car to Normandy only needing to fill twice on over 1600mile trip and still have a quarter of a tank. And that was with a diesel v8 no real planning needed for fueling or concerns and sticking to the speed limits and being stuck in some traffic on the m6 and m25. And done some on the spur adventures like to pub instead of services. Plus I prefer having a decent 4x4 especially with all the wet wether we’ve had this year and for winter. As I’ve always say if you like or want a EV enjoy but don’t force people who it doesn’t work for or is unsuitable for to have one.
Totally agree, everyone's circumstances are different and I'm not here to convince anyone to get an EV, I just wanted to share my experience and show what you can expect from an older Tesla Model X now that prices have fallen to a point where your average man in the street can afford them. I funded mine with the insurance payout from my S-Max (written off) plus some savings, so luckily don't have any financing to worry about.
For someone who complains about the gullwing doors being inconvenient, why didn't you check that before buying the car? Who buys a vehicle and then does the research? It’s beyond me. What’s your yearly service cost compared to your old internal combustion engine (ICE) car? It's amusing when someone buys a 6-year-old vehicle and expects it to perform like new, using the excuse of 'Well, I had a car before.' Which one of your previous cars had regular monthly updates that actually improved it? The answer is none. And as for the comment about nobody putting a 'P' on the rear badge - it’s always about trying to appear like they have something better than they do.
I've checked the paperwork and it says "100D" not "P100D", so the only place it has the "P" is on the back. I'm still wondering whether Tesla misbadged it, but have no idea if this is a common occurrence or not. It's only had 1 owner from new so only 1 person could have added the "P" if they were that way inclined. But the kinds of people that own these cars aren't going to be motivated to do that are they?
@@DJBaldPaul On the main screen it would have a P before the 100D in red so not a performance. Tesla could of mis badged it but that's unlikely never heard of it happening in fact
Great video 👍 if you plan your route using the Tesla app you can add stops on the way then send it all to the car. I approached Tesla re. corrosion on my rear spoiler but they weren’t interested…my understanding is that the corrosion will not get worse so probably best just to paint over it as I have. Looking forward to more videos - great work!👍👍
EVs can be very efficient in urban areas - if you do it continuously. What is hurting your range on those short trips is all the gaps where the car is left not used.. so all the heating up / cooling down that the car is managing each time you start a new trip. Just look at the consumption graph when you initially set off will be significantly higher than the rest of the trip. Then energy consumption in the city improves a lot with gentle acceleration - as well as saving the tyres.
Matrix headlamps on an Audi Q7, depending on model would have been optional extra of about £3500 so not comparable really. 2018 is a lifetime ago as far as ev’s are concerned. My model y has matrix headlights which were fitted when the car was made, but were only switched on in June 2024, with a software update at no cost. There is a lot of opinions around on the internet and in the press about ev’s in general and particularly Tesla which is nothing but total rubbish. So I would suggest for your own sanity you take with a pinch of salt. Wipers are a problem, or should I say were, again almost cured with a recent software update. As far as your satnav is concerned mine does everything you wished yours did, maybe its due an update, but certain versions don’t get full update, I think it depends on the processor fitted to your model. So there are quite a few variations of the navigation software. I would suggest you join an online group of Model X owners and make enquiries with them from all your queries and not rely on word of mouth or media rubbish. Thanks for the interesting video, I look forward to future updates. Oh and I came from an Audi Q5 so some experience of that brand.😂
Yeah, my MX is on the latest s/w version and nav version, updates for both came down just a few weeks ago, unfortunately no new features were added. I just don't think they are going to provide any more feature updates for such an old car.
Have you suffered a flat 12v battery issues let alone the up and coming HV battery issues? They are a night mare financially. they're great if still under or someone as a company owner can wright it off as a company expense. Worst cars ever made and only in 10 years or so. You have ICE cars still running made during 1940's. Yes eco friendly, explain how? the disposal of the batteries, them catching fire. The recovery when they decide to play posam??
No problems with either 12v or HV battery. You do know EV batteries are recycled yeah? A whole industry has sprung up to process them. There's plenty of 10yr old Teslas still on the road and they aren't suddenly going to stop working. What's your point re catching fire? There's more ICE fires per year than EV fires, this has been proven statistically.
Beautiful cars but Tesla customer service is horrible. Im still waiting for them to replace a drive unit on my model 3. Luckily, it still has a warranty on it, but the waiting time is longer than four weeks. As soon as I get my car back, I will sell it because the value of them drops like flies.
The memory wears out 😂 no integrated circuits rarely 'wear out'.. Planned obscelence more like it with the software... Apologise?! You obviously believe absolutely everything you read on Google.. I'm speaking from experience here, electronics - specifically chips - can last over 50 years when designed properly... so if tesla are allowing theirs to fail then as I've already said, it's a design plan so people like you can empty your wallet, so gullable.. But carry on believing in the dream.. Look at Apple (if you look that up) whom were found out some years back to writing into their phones a 'sell by date', they got found out and this is no different...
Read this then come back and apologise... www.electronics-notes.com/articles/electronic_components/semiconductor-ic-memory/flash-wear-levelling-reliability-lifetime.php
Great video and info on local repairers. I've just bought a 2019 M3P for same money with 17k miles. Insurance is crazy, but owing more money on a new car is crazier! Keep us updated. 👌
@@ascelot My car still has 2 years Tesla battery and drive train warranty left, so that's not really a concern for me. After 2 years I'll still have a car with a decent range, the battery isn't going to suddenly lose all its capacity. Even after the warranty expires there are companies that specialise in servicing battery packs, they can even replace failing modules with new or reconditioned ones, so there isn't even a need to change the whole pack. There's a company called Cedar Electric down near Worthing that can service battery packs so there really isn't any need to be worried about it. It's not going to be cheap but it's a lot cheaper than changing the pack or buying another car. And remember that it might not even be necessary, there are Teslas on RU-vid that have done over 400,000 miles.
@@DJBaldPaul Still for me, a anxiety based, as well as personal experience from owning hybrid, that repairs can and will be expensive, as not a lot of independant garages will touch them depending on what needs to be fixed. My Auris had break pipe failures, main dealer was my only option, considering it cost half the price of the car, decided to let it go.
Model X owner here, don't go replacing anything until you've reached out to Cleevely EV in Cheltenham. They offer a mobile service and are brilliant. Much cheaper than tesla and often understand the problems better than even Tesla do.
You covered all the bits I was personally interested in. But I have a question about the insurance as I heard it goes up significantly because it is electric. How did the purchase of it affected yours? Thank you! Keep up with the good work 🍺
How do they deem that to be safe sitting in the back 2 seats with your head that close to the trim/roofline? Best never to put adults in there to be safe.
Enjoyed your honest film, you appear to have been left with a long list of work at your cost that the garage should have done before you bought this - especially the tyres and suspension. If I were you I would be talking to them and involve your local trading standards office. It doesn’t matter how good a deal you think you got - the car needs to be fit for purpose when you drive away. Good luck with it and hope for updates as you go forward
If a garage is changing the suspension arms it's their job to aligng the wheels, if they can't go somewhere else

I have had a leaf since 2016, and I never spent any money on it apart from tires and a set of wipers. I only did the first two services in 2017 and 2018, the tax is free and I 've always charger at work. Until last month, when I had a small incident and because it not worth anything nowadays, the price of the repair was 60% the price of the car, so they write it off :( Then I considered buying a user car for the first time, and a tesla was on top of my list, but the prices I would have to pay for any issues I would might have scared me off of it. I end up buying an used leaf from the same year with the money I got from the insurance. Including the insurance for this year!
what sort of dealer sells a car with dangerous worn out tyres and dodgy steering for £26k.. what else could be wrong i wonder ... also the car will be worth scrap in 2 years when the warranty expires
What a ridiculous statement. Just because the warranty runs out doesn't mean the car is scrap. There's Teslas out there with over 400,000 miles on them, it's got years of life left in it.
