Welcome to Whitt Ling Woods and hope you enjoy the content. The channel is here to help people new to whittling get use to different techniques and easier carvings to start. Other videos about equipment and tutorial style videos are also something that will appear on the channel. Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!
Thx for this video m8 ;) you have other easy to carve models please? I will make this on the beach soon when i am on vacation when wife is enjoying the sun and i am under the umbrella ;)
I appreciate the comment! The owl one is a good one to do. I have a small army of them at this point 😆. I do have other beginner type carvings on the channel but will always be looking to add more for sure. Enjoy your vacation when you take it!
I’m just starting my carving journey. I’m currently on vacation with my wife and kids and I just carved this same design on the beach today..Thanks for the video got a new sub.
@@whittlingwoods21I tried to start carving years ago and didn’t hang with it, but I wish I would have. I definitely enjoy it and this time around I’ve been trying to carve a least a little bit every day.
@@ThatPainterGuyKy Sorry for the delayed response, RU-vid doesn't alert always for comments lol. I'm with you on carving a little bit a day. I started like that and I slowly moved toward small projects that I could tackle in a short period. Those 2" by 2" carvings still a multiple day projects though lol.
I have used an acrylic varnish and linseed oil before, love them both but I'll need to try some different finishes for different styles at some point! Nice video!
Not sure if you’re aware of this or its just me but I was trying to find one of your videos a few days ago, searching RU-vid for your channel name does not work. It only returns results for whittling woods channel.
Thanks for letting me know I'll have to look into that. I did a quick search and you are correct. Wonder if it does that due to the channel being smaller or not. Either way I'll see if there's anything on my end I can solve. I appreciate the comment and hope you have a great weekend! 👍👍👍
I did another search and seemed to find my channel eventually down the long list lol. My guess is the channel is small but you would think if typing the exact name it should pop up sooner.
Good job! I would recommend in the future painting the light colors first (except the dots). It's easier to cover light paint than dark. Also good song pick.
I appreciate the comment and view! I've actually mentioned that painting tip in previous videos and have yet to take my own advice 😂. Enjoy your weekend!!
I first carved one of these when the video first came out, I've started to carve more recently. The first one came out looking ok, the second one looked like someone put it through a grinder.😂 Thank you for taking the time to show us beginners how to do this
Beavercraft is a low rated carving knife ..I was given some to review on my channel ....They are not bad for beginners ..but long term the steel probably wont hold up...Thank you my friend for sharing your knowledge and talent and keep those videos up....Thank you
I have that knife and with a little know how and some elbow grease you can turn it from a so-so knife into a very good knife. Use your coarse stone to grind that bevel off to a flat grind. That also thins the blade. Then work through your finer grit stones to finish, then polish and remove the micro bur on a strop. You''ll be amazed at how much better it glides through the wood. Like a different knife.
Whittling woods I paint mine to look like fly agaric red with white spots sometimes I carve a wood spirits in the stalk I always carry a swiss army knife with exellent saw on great to harvest branches for carving little tips 👍🐾🦊🇬🇧
Whittling woods also great for making pot puri scents spray favourite scent on it and enjoy or put candle wax on it to light barbecue or a bushcraft fire my wild foxes I hand feeds lives playing with the chips pounces on them if im carving he loves popcorn pounced on it if any pop out as for the badger he's pretty grumpy sulks if he gets only peanut butter sandwiches when I forget the jam combo 🦡🐾🦊👍🇬🇧
Thanks I certainly had that in mind but so far it hasn't been to bad the few times I've tried it. These particular sticks were cut like 6 months ago. Not sure if that makes a big difference but I did have a small bit of sap on the knife lol. Appreciate the comment and tip! 👍👍
I took a Flexcut detail knife, which is fairly inexpensive, and I reprofiled the edge to make it a flat grind. Now it's as good as any knife I've ever used. Well worth the effort. It cuts sooo much better now.
@@whittlingwoods21 I started on a 400 grit wet stone to get the profile I wanted then went to 1000 to get a nice burr. Then 3000 and then 8000. Finished on a strop. WOW! I've carved with Helvies and this is just as good. Unbelieveably sharp and holds the edge very well.
Moral of the story: you don't have to spend a lot of money to have an excellent carving tool. An inexpensive knife (with a good blade) and a some work with the stones and strop and you're in business.
If I may add one more thing.....I found some carving gloves at Harbor Freight for $5.00 a pair. They are as good or better than anything (more expensive) that I have used in the past.
@@brinkleysfield How do you like the finish on the handle? I have a couple of OCC knives with unfinished black walnut handles. I oiled them to protect the wood, but I like the surface grip of them. The Flexcut handles look like they might get slippery if (when) my hands sweat. I really want to try the steel, though, so I might get one and just sand off the lacquer finish.
@@whittlingwoods21 swiss army knife is great resource especially if you modify small blade get one with the exellent saw on but no corkscrew thats a hot spot Philips driver on it is way better I modify old butchers knives too free exellent tool
@@arguchik you can get a splinter carving folding knife too highly recommended and a swiss army knife modify small blade get Chris's lubbkeman little book of whittling great book tell you how to modify your swiss army knife greetings from uk essex 👍🇬🇧🐾🦊
When I see you cutting the wood, I see myself. I started whittling and I always wondered how Doug Linker makes it looking, like he is cutting soap not wood. I ordered basswood, I ordered flexcut knives, but it didnt change. Now I see, I am not the only one. And now I know, why lots of people precut their carvings with a bandsaw.
