I must say that, as a pretty conservative evangelical myself, I have always loved John Dominic Crossan. His book The First Paul was fascinating and I'd be interested in seeing how his ideas have evolved in the new book
Allow me to help. You missed two keys words in the writing of Josephus. "Among Us" Josephus includes himself among the leading men presenting to Pilate. This is suggestive that Josephus was a member of the Sanhedrin (administrative advisor to Roman ruling authority). I will help you down the rabbit hole, where this leads. Joseph, the father of Jesus, Josephus, and Nicodemus were brothers. Joseph was Roman contractor helping build Caesarea after being pillage and burned around 4 BC. Josephus, the Roman General/Historian is the same Josephus of Arimathea. Arimathea is a Jerusalem suburb, so Josephus of the suburbs is an odd Biblical title. Josephus's request for the body of Jesus to be buried in a family site also makes more sense. Josephus was also a Roman general who was relieved of duty in the 70 AD sacking of Jerusalem. "Those who first loved him" would have included his uncles at Jesus's birth/childhood. Jesus's secret meeting makes more sense, if Nicodemus was his uncle. Jesus's open rebellion against Pharisees would have been tolerated, if Jesus had connections to ruling Roman authorities. This history creates problems for early Christianity and had to be obscured. Jesus's near relatives were Roman collaborators. Jesus' uncles were on the panel of his execution. Josephus helped in the killing of Jews during the sack of Jerusalem. Before dismissing this history, do your research. The writings of Josephus is 100% accurate. The writing is perfectly obscure, and there is no reason to fake obscurity.

As more and more historical data proves the existence of Jesus Christ, then you find more and more about Jesus and his family. Jesus's cousin was John the Baptist. James who become the leader of the church in Jerusalem was his brother. Jesus's relatives are already involved.

Yes Jesus was mentioned in two paragraphs in the Antiquities of Josephus he interviewed Two bold Christians in the day. They tried to convert Josephus. He would have none of it.
This was a really rich and informative discussion. Thank you. I do think, however, that it's a little naive to suggest that most Christians today would be able to handle this perspective on reading the New Testament. The whole idea that different writers are promoting their own religious perspectives on things-not literal divine revelations or historical eyewitness accounts-is, unfortunately, anathema to them.

@@arbitScaleModels So at 37:16 Crossan mentions a painting from Sicily. Is that an example of your concern? I believe he is using it to illustrate an ongoing tendency in the Church to strive to harmonize Paul with Peter and to make the latter the one in charge. It wasn't a proof-text as such for what's happening in the book of Acts, but rather an artistic rendering of the same idea that Crossan is getting at in his book.

It is clearly not a historical proof or even evidence of anything-prior to this Crossan already stated that the entire issue of Paul's death is "amateur guesswork." He's just using that art to illustrate Paul's "legacy" among later Christianity, namely, his letters.

The writing of Josephus are copies made by Christian scribes who inserted a statement about Jesus in the middle of a paragraph describing aqueducts. It's a forgery which Christians insist on quoting as proof that Jesus existed.
Hi James. It's certainly possible that the entire passage is an interpolation, and several of our scholars would agree, as mentioned in the video. The passage does not come in the middle of a paragraph about aqueducts, rather it's found in a series of events that deal with Pilate's career and challenges faced by the Jewish people. I encourage you to check out Antiquities 18.3 for the narrative. If you didn't get a chance to watch the video, it deals with these various questions. My best!
Very insightful synopsis with a very realistic understanding of human nature used as a prism through which to interpret the context. What are your thoughts on the notion that Josephus was involved not long afterwards with a Roman reimagining of the New Testament for reasons of political expediency. I think it was considering the the Flavian agenda using known ancient religious sects and pagan resurrection cults along with anthropomorphisised agricultural myths (apparently widespread at the time) as guidelines along with the old testament? I'm a bit sketchy on details because it was a discussion I had over a decade ago but it's been on my mind lately for some reason.
There really wasn't a New Testament in Josephus' lifetime to be reimagined. However, certain books in the New Testament could be subject to certain Romanization. John Dominic Crossan's new book "Paul the Pharisee" looks at this as various NT authors attempted to tone Paul down with a more modest, Roman friendly take. Check out part 1 of his podcast on the channel from last month.
Other translations of the first Josephus text give us the following: Jesus... was a teacher of paradoxical (astonishing, startling, surprising) poetics (tricks, feats, works and deeds) to those who gladly accepted his strange (novel, unusual, abnormal) form of truth with pleasure (or delight). Interestingly, this translation also coincides with the ground-breaking critical-historical scholarship of the pioneering luminaries of the Westar Institute - Dom Crossan, Bob Funk, etc. Jesus spoke of the kingdom of God in a poetics of paradox.

The ability to see that NT Jesus and historical Jesus have only some overlap and are in many ways two separate characters, is the key to understanding the birth and development of early Christianity. The religion of Jesus (apocalyptic Judaism) became a religion about Jesus. One he very likely would reject himself.

Heretics, historically and now saved Christianity from itself. Without them, fundamentalist Christians wouldn't have internal enemy which gives them their zeal and fervor to being with. And we know that the biggest and longest threat to Christianity wasn't atheists or pagans but other Christian schools of thought. Narcissism of minor difference. So, there is no Christianity and never was one without orthopraxy and dissent. Earliest centuries of Christianity show there were many Christianities out there, without actual core and agreed upon orthodoxy, whether in doctrine or praxis. Status "it's complicated" was there from the very start. Also those heretical schools of thought in some ways much better preserved some of the more contemplative, mystical, esoteric and ethical precepts of Christianity, while orthodoxy usually served the Empire, unchecked power, the earthly elite, upper class in which real Christian doctrine of humility was NEVER practiced but only preached. If anything, no matter how much variations or doctrinal, cultural differences are there between "Christianities", now and then, it cannot be argued that Jesus movement in any version, shape or form was pro-elite, pro-empire, pro-greed, pro-earthly, pro-nationalism... It was apocalyptic, eschatological, soteriological movement that emphasized inner qualities, whether moral or spiritual.. Heretics like Valentinians, Sethians, Brethren of Free Spirit, Cathars etc,.. understood this to be the core of Christian life and saved these teachings for later mystics (even within the orthodox circles themselves) to be inspired which gave us a faithful but spiritual alternative to orthodox, worldly, corrupt Church. I see these newer developments in radical theology in last two centuries (and for some part also in late medieval to early modern period) as a way to mitigate Church's fallen state of depravity and spiritual emptiness - of which there isn't any shortage. It's an natural outcome of living in post-industrial capitalist world in which immanence is much more preferred and relatable then any absolute, abstract transcendence.
An interesting but incredibly flawed argument, many logicians would consider an argument from silence simply fallacious, and his assumption that John is not an independent source is also not well supported
