A couple who loves outdoor adventures. We live in the mountains (Truckee, CA) and part time near the ocean. We hike, mountain bike, trail run, stand up paddle board and cross country ski. Blair raced sail boats when he was young, and now he and Celia are starting to sail together. Celia has never sailed, but loves the idea of being on the ocean. We purchased a 2005 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey and named her Rejoicing, because that is what we do when we are out in nature. Some may say we are starting late in life, but we say it is never too late.
just a note: if you are not reefing leave a little slack in your reef lines for better sail shape. at aroud 2:50 they were too tight! Otherwise great videos, How we learn, eh! 86 and still sailing! John
We did some under water filming in Anegada. Sadly the coral was dead and we did not see any fish. We will have to research some better snorkeling sites next time.
Im 58 years old with 20 years experience of skating. but not along time I have understood biomechanical structure of skiing. At first time I couldnt to understand the main point of skiing. Ihave been watching many hours of ski races on video. I tried to repeat so that i was watching. at final it have been happened. i AM very happy because I can skating just like professional skiers. Its a great emotion. The quantity turned to quality. MOreover I wont to stop my progress in skating technique. I wanna go on to do it better and faster
It is an Adidas bucket hat from Amazon. Hopefully this link can be copied and pasted. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B091DD99H7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 The only disadvantage is that it does not adjust in the crown. It does have a chin strap and provides good sun protection. Thank you for watching.
Great anchoring advice! My tip to anyone as well, whether grabbing a mooring or anchoring: if you're running forward or aft (as opposed to walking at a cruiser-relaxed pace), you're doing it wrong. A lot of the skill comes from letting the natural forces, like weight of the chain and weight of the boat, do all the work for you! Lol, the truly advanced have a glass of wine or a margarita while they do it (depending on the latitude ).
Yes, and free! I just do 30 minutes, and I encourage supplementing with group and/or private lessons at TDXC. Just let me know when you are in the area, and we can pick a time. Best is at least the second day after recent snowfall, or longer.
@@Rejoicing That would be fantastic!!! Any tips to get me going would be great! I'm going to be there today around 11am but it is likely too short notice for you. Then I'm traveling for work for a bit and will be back later next week. I'm also on facebook if it is easier to message there. Thank you! : ) Erika
Greetings Mark. You are likely a stronger skier than I am! I do show a somewhat more upright position, as this is more attainable for skiers who are learning. I make mention of this throughout the series. And that, if skiers start racing, they will work with a team and coaches, and that there will be differences. Of course with racers and higher expert skiers being more forward, as well as big variations in certain gears, depending upon an individual’s abilities and endurance/VO2max. Thanks for your comment.
Most people over about age 30 or so have an arch that collapses (both feet). And if your arch collapses, your knee moves away from ski and toward your body (when the ski is out to the side). The result is that your ski goes on edge. And if all the friction of a ski is on the edge, it moves slowly. Ideally you want to ride a flat ski as long as possible. Exception is V1 on a steep hill (where a flat to snow surface ski will slide down) and if you are a very high level racer (where V1 turnover is so extreme that they stay on edges). But for us skiing mortals, a flat ski is a fast ski!
So you need an orthotic to support the arch, so you can ride a flat ski for a long time within the cycle. I would recommend a ski orthotist. In Truckee, Start Haus is excellent!
How clean and beautiful everything is! Not like in my Russia. Wherever you go, there are trash heaps. Today I went skiing in the forest. Bottles, bags of chips, someone pissed right on the ski track. Eh (
I have watched dozens of videos and I cannot tell the difference between V1, and V2-alternate. In fact, as far as I am aware, V1 is equivalent to the Canadian 2-skate, and the V2 is equivalent to the Canadian 1-Skate, but I know of no mention of a “1-Skate Alternate”. So, I’m not sure that Canadians even know the difference. Can you please describe how they differ?
Great question. It is harder to see at first. With V1 your poles are landing with the ski. With V2 and V2 alternate your poles land first. The ski lands when your hands come down to about hip level. V2 you pole on both sides and with V2 alternate you pole on one side. If you watch our other videos there are some slow mo demos and explanations. Thanks for watching.
Excellent video! Love the 7 gears into and the explanations on V1. One question though, other videos (nordic ski lab) indicate that landing on a flat ski is not optimal. What is your take on this? Flat when less steep and then on edge when steeper? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Xo8KM3vMV-0.html
Thank you. Yes landing on a flat ski even uphill is most effective. It does take practice to bring the ski into center each time and get the knees pointed more to the side. Orthotic inserts are needed for some people. Hope that helps. In my later videos I cover more uphill.
wow good for you both , X country skiing is some workout. presoak the tators in baking soda /water 7 mins a better crisp to them. pad them towel dry. spice em as you like then toss em with olive oil. bake em up 375 F 30 mins enjoy......
Oh, yeah. They curve inward a bit and they glide almost straight down the line during your push-off during e.g. V2A or free skate. I'd practice that at the beginning doing free skate on an even or slight downhill trail, and you can get really dynamic push-offs because of that. Not everyone's cup of tea tho'. Also very safe on curvy downhill sections 🤩
Thank you for watching and commenting. Do you have videos of your technique? If so we would love to see them. Good point on Fanny pack. I may not have the strength to do the technique you suggested. I may have failed to mention in this video, but I have in others that once a person becomes more advanced they would benefit from private lessons or a good ski clinic.
It is always a lot of driving, but we did have a good time. Seattle seems to get more and more hectic. Thanks for watching and commenting. We have our mascot, but we haven’t included him in a video yet.
Spot on review! After sailing ours for the last four years from Florida to Grenada the giant freezer and cockpit storage awesome. Ours has furling mainsail so we never leave the cockpit. We sailed with 3 Beneteau 473s and our 423 was a bit faster and pointed higher. We are in our late 60s and easily sail this boat. Sailing Maracudja
for the teak treatment they have small paint rollers with different brush heights. ask the paint dept guy . attach that to a roller stick and save your back and knees.

Not trying to be rude, but curious as to your age? I am two months shy of 86 and have made that trip a few times! love it, and the other way is Drakes Bay, a lovely anchoring spot! Bodega is neat, too! John, SV Felicity. Still sailing!
Thanks for those suggestions. Drakes Bay has been on the list and we have wondered about Bodega Bay. We have loved hiking in the area in the past. We are both around 60. We wish you many more years of sailing.
hows the masco situation? could you share temperature and departure time too. ? sea gulls is the vanilla term. those are gulls and come in a huge number of species. there are birds that live only at sea. they are called pelagic birds.
We left at 7:15. The temp out on the ocean must have been in the forties. We ordered Celia some bibs and a heavy coat for next time. Helly Hansen had a great sale.
