Guts has an idolization of Griffith akin to a follower and a cult leader. Griffith is a master manipulator that, through guts, starts to realize there is more to winning and succeeding than battles and is actually developing romantic feelings. Griffith is totally gay. I don’t imagine guts feels that way towards Griffith.

Maybe if the show was always "woke", lifelong fans suddenly disliking it, has nothing to do with its messaging that its always had, but you know, the quality.

I don’t understand the hate she gets, she is the best main character in the avatar universe ever. 2:50 no it’s not, it’s the best season of the show. 5:40 I agree that Unavatu weren’t the best villains, but the other things in season 2 are great. 7:48 true, I love her so much, especially because her Israeli voice actress dubbed her perfectly, I didn’t like her voice in English.

Definitely relate to the constant queerbaiting, and poor queerbaiting at that, throughout many shows in the early 00s. As a millennial I never even saw a trans character in any of the shows I watched, or that any remotely qu33r person was deliberately hammed up to be "interesting" (Moriarty from the trashfire Sherlock) or killed off to save the status quo (Supernatural is the big one there). As someone who didn't come out til his 20s, it was frustrating to see that gay men were put into this idea that we were/(are?) too dangerously sexual to be put on screen, or that we had to be a stereotype. While Stede may callback to the foppish dandy stereotype, Blackbeard (and to many degrees Izzy) are not. You can be that masculine and still be gay, you can be non-binary and still find love and acceptance amongst your crew. While the stories are heightened for the drama and comedy of the series, there is real historical truth in that many qu33r people during the Golden Age of Piracy, sought out the communities of pirates due to their accepting attitudes around sexuality and gender expression. Especially given the past pirate media has significantly heightened the straight myth (AC4, the POTC series), it's so nice to see a story where that's subverted. Also another note on Izzy in season 2, is while he fights the character growth tooth and nail, he does eventually stop being a hardass (due to some rough stuff that happens early on in that season), and I think a part of that was him letting go of the Blackbeard fiction he was in love with. He grows so much that he participates in a talent show on the Revenge, and I think that's really special.

Griffith definitely had romantic feelings for Guts. I think that's made pretty obvious. Guts' feelings toward Griffith go beyond just regular friendship, but it's kind of hard to say if they're romantic. I think that if Guts is attracted to men at all, he'd probably be heavily in denial about it due to what was done to him as a child, as well as the kind of setting he's in. I also don't think Guts, Griffith, and Casca being in a throuple would've been a realistic outcome. Griffith doesn't really respect Casca very much. She used to be his closest confidant and he was willing to show some amount of vulnerability around her that he wasn't with others, but the moment Guts came into the picture, he essentially replaced her with him. He only ever entertains the idea of being in a relationship with her after he's lost everything. Guts and Casca both felt a strong attachment with Griffith, but they ended up falling for each other because they were both more open and honest with each other than Griffith was.

I think Griffith's outlook on Guts pre-eclipse is misinterpreted HEAVILY. Especially in the Charlotte scene. Griffith isn't romantically in love with Guts persay but rather, Guts is probably the only member of the Hawk who doesn't cling his dream onto Griffith or view him as some sort of idol. Simply put, Guts is the only man Griffith ever knew who didn't put him on a pedestal and it gave Griffith a view into a life he could not have; a life where he doesn't have to attain his dream, a life where he could just settle down and be content, a normal life. You could even argue that deep down, Griffith viewed Guts as his one and only true friend. Guts was the only one who Griffith could just be himself around, who he can unapologetically be himself around. He didn't have to worry about inspiring Guts, nor did he have to worry about making any political moves on Guts. Guts is just simply there for the ride, and Griffith values this because he had always felt he was truly alone in his pursuit of his dream. Maybe that on some level, he felt Guts could save him from the path of essentially matyring himself for his own dream. So when Griffith later thinks of Guts during the Charlotte scene, it's not because he was fantasizing about Guts but rather it was like watching the last bit of hope of ever being able to live any semblance of a normal life slip away and it caught him so off guard it broke him instantly and played over and over in his mind in a cruel loop trying to process the loss. This is why Griffith does what he does during the Eclipse. He felt especially after the year of torture he endured thanks to the (arguably even more evil) king of midland, that Guts had essentially stripped him of everything; His hope for a normal life, the command of his men, the girl who loved him more than anything else, and his only true friend. The ultimate betrayal, which in his mind, had to be paid back ten fold. TL;DR Griffith and Guts aren't gay for each other, Griffith just had too many issues combined with too much cosmic destiny.

One of Miura's inspiration is a BL manga called Kaze to Ki no Uta. Sure there's a lot of homoerotic subtext here and there but since the main target audience of Berserk is straight dudes its very unlikely that Griffith "feelings" for Guts will ever be acknowledge. I think the homoerotic subtext is there to appeal to women and to add a sense of depth and complexity to their relationship.

POST-GOLDEN-AGE SPOILERS BELOW - - - - - "At least it is true that Mankind has no control - even over his own will..." A major point of Berserk's plot is that of causality (think destiny in ancient literature), and how a bunch of events come together for one *specific* outcome. This is hinted at in the *debatably* cannon chapter where Griffith is seen talking to what is effectively God, who , on a panel showcasing Guts and Griffith in a central view, claims that low-level emotions across generations of human beings were manipulated by this entity specifically to bring about causality. It may be possible that Guts and Griffith's relationship is formed the way that it is because the story's "God" is subtlely manipulating each other's will to ensure that either character fills their specific story purpose. If Guts isn't present to make Griffith forget his dream, then Griffith can't approach the *specific* moment where the Behelit awakens, allowing him to ascend to Godhood; And if Griffith isn't present for Guts, then Guts will never be present at the Eclipse to be sacrificed, and escape into the interstice to follow in Skull Knight's footsteps. This is likely the reason Guts and Griffith don't have a relationship that is strictly platonic or romantic -- either one is paranormally drawn to the other through predestination, and thus, feels an intense longing for the other that falls short of romance, but goes beyond comradery. With all that being said, outside of Causality's influence: - I believe that Guts is straight, as he doesn't exhibit a fully romantic or sexual attraction to any characters besides Casca. - Griffith doesn't seem to feel conventional sexual attraction. He views sex as another means to gaining what he wants - be it control over others or to further his dream. - HOWEVER, Griffith clearly has an intense romantic attraction to Guts which is shown an uncountable amount of times. Half of the reason he even joined the God Hand was to prevent his feelings for guts from overriding his own dream. While this could be chalked up to causality's influence, the one-sided nature of Griffith's specific attraction makes me think otherwise.

I always got the feeling that Mr. Miura always intended there to be an ambiguous tension between these two characters the more I think about it. I think he was definitely trying to create a relationship that extended past an ordinary friendship but didn't extend to a love-based relationship, with elements of examining possession versus what defines equality between two people who care for each other in a very exceptional way. I think that Griffith has an intense bond with Guts no matter how you want to label it, but no bond with anyone can contend with or begin to match Griffith's own ego and self-image. Griffith is accustomed to always being the best at everything and getting what he wants, and he sees himself as indominable, including but certainly not limited to his own will and how far it takes him in life. First and foremost, Griffith is in love with himself, but at the same time he is willing to go out of his way for Guts almost as though Guts is the closest he has ever come to deeply caring about another person beyond their utility, as in their usefulness to him. I think Griffith cares about his other followers enough for their sacrifices to be meaningful (if you know, you know) but as to how far beyond their usefulness as soldiers and on what level he even perceives them as individuals to care about on a truly human level is debatable, but likely doesn't extend very far. With Guts, there's no question he is more than a soldier to him. Maybe it's a kindred spirit thing, maybe it's more, who knows? I think leaving us constantly questioning this was part of Miura's plan for the two and their dynamic.

7:13 exactly. You didn’t touch on this but kyoshi reading the future makes no sense. Why didn’t kyoshi tell ROKU the future when he was letting Sozin off the hook when he was the avatar! These changes add other plot holes that is hard for me to overlook. I’m so glad you call out how kyoshi is portrayed. Why would she tell aang to not run away “””again””” from his responsibilities when he never ran away to begin with! Also Kuruk appeared to Aang outside of a shrine so they broke their own made up new rules.

My main grip is with the martial arts. They did cast people with martial backgrounds. Yet they didn t hire consultants on fights and choregraphies. So the fights are messy and edited poorly. And the bendings lost all meaning. It s just some kamehamehas at times 😅

The fact that they “didn’t want to waste time” but literally pulled storylines from the original’s seasons 2 & 3 is insane. The way they changed lore is infuriating. Sokka and Katara in the spirit world? Yue being a fox spirit? The Badger moles sensing emotions? I just don’t get why they changed LORE. Aang NOT bending water? Why? Ridiculous.

There’s a reason why TLOK isnt as objectively good as ATLA or objectively good at all. It’s just a mess. Sorry, not sorry. Besides the fact none of the characters were very memorable (maybe except Bolin), the plot or should I say plots just seem to come out of nowhere. I honestly think TLOK could have been a better show if they kept plot from the first season since the bender vs non bender plot actually made sense and was interesting. I mean, in a world full of benders who constantly cause war and violence, why wouldn’t the non benders retaliate? Also, I agree, Korra as a character wasn’t THAT bad but they could have done a lot with her character and didn’t. Instead, we’re left with a character who is constantly tortured so much so that she was left paralyzed and in a state of depression. She’s also arrogant and constantly making bad decisions and doesn’t know how to act because the “order of the white lotus” decided to keep her isolated from the world and not have any real experience. There’s just so many things that the show could have done better from character writing to story plotting. And I know the writers were pressured each time Nickelodeon decided to renew it for a new season and not knowing if the show will be renewed or not, but most people are going to judge the show for what it is rather than for how it was made which is completely valid. Time and time again, I go back to watching ATLA (and yes I grew up watching both so its not just nostalgia) and its not just that the characters felt genuine or that the plot itself was really good but the fact that it taught lessons that are still relevant today and expressed dark themes in a sensitive manner than a violent one. I wholeheartedly believe that any one of any age or gender could watch ATLA and enjoy it, I cant exactly say the same about TLOK.

Parts of it is because of a personality clash. People are used to Aang's peaceful and reserved but childish nature. Korra is almost the opposite to this so it's hard for people to accept her as the new avatar. Kind like the doctor who effect, people are always critical of a new doctor but in the world of avatar it's literally a new person rather then regeneration.
