Do these come in kits or do you have to scratch bulid them?
@rogerdavis679
@rogerdavis679 3 года назад
Almost certainly these were all scratch built by the owners/drivers. That's what model engineers do! However if you are keen to get into miniature railways and do not have the necessary workshop facilities or skills and patience (most of this scale of model take years rather than months to build) there are always second-hand fully built ones available (have a look at www.stationroadsteam.com/) or kits (take a look at www.pollymodelengineering.co.uk/sections/polly-locomotive-kits/index.asp).

Please ask questions. wern54 kit What is the tightening torque for the compressor mounting nut?
@rogerdavis679
@rogerdavis679 4 года назад
Sorry. Cannot help on that one as I was simply asked to machine this component for a friend with no CNC facilities. I believe you can find the full constructional documentation for the MW54 on the Web. Best wishes.

Great shots. I would have liked to see a flyover of the train or even pacing it for a short distance if that was possible.

Great little loco there. I've been look at these and reading up on them. I'd like to attempt to machine one from castings and get lazer cut frames. Is the engine a good run in the track? Does is have much pull? Thanks for posting :-)

MrGrunter0 Thanks for your comment. Sorry not reply before - have only just read yours! I am still sorting out a few problems resulting from many years out of use with previous owner. Hope to do some track testing this coming week so watch this space. General opinion is that this was a very successful Don Young design and surprisingly powerful for its size.

Yes I do agree with you there. The Parrot is cheaper and looks nowhere near as well built as the DJI Phantom. Think I need to start saving! Thanks for your advice. UKWMO

Thanks for the info. Not sure whether to get the DJI Phantom or the Parrot AR Drone 2.0. The latter is controlled by an iPhone/iPad or Android device and can be recorded directly to the device so may go with this one. Either way there are some good Quadcopters/drones on the market.

That's choosing between two very different machines in terms of performance, capabilities and PRICE! You will get what you pay for. I started with a Parrot and quickly moved onto the Phantom 2 Vision (Mk1) when it first came out. If you can afford the latest model (Vision Plus) you get 3 axis gimbal now built in. Best of luck whichever way you go!

Hello, does your home built 3 axis gimbal make much difference to the stability? Does it still work well without this? Very good video by the way. Let's hope the extension planning is passed and the railway's re-instatement on the next phase to Blackmoor Gate is not too far away!
@rogerdavis679
@rogerdavis679 10 лет назад
Hello UKWMO, thanks for the interest. Yes, the three axis gimbal makes a huge difference. At 1000ft a.s.l. even on a calm day thee are considerable wind gusts that move the airframe around quite a lot. If you look carefully at the top right hand corner from about 51 sec into the video you will see the prop protectors coming into shot as the frame moves around (I have edited most of these out of the rest out the video) but the horizon hardly moves at all as the gimbal auto corrects. The gimbal motors are all Turnigy AX-2804 and controlled by a 2 axis BaseCam (AlexMos) Simple BGC plus 3rd axis extension board. The actual camera mountings etc are home designed and machined from solid aluminium. Hope that helps. Roger
