I have never sobbed at a film, but when the doctor is speaking to the cancer patient, telling her there is nothing she can do. Her resigned 'oui' is too much.
Institutional critique from within the institution. The makers of this piece function within and benefit from this system and institution so their critique feels a bit limp and insubstantial.
Amazing documentary. It’s as fascinating as it is infuriating. White Lotus season 1 only scratched the surface of the horrific systemic injustices that Native Hawaiians continue to face.
Growing up there used to be a Ist generation Asian Western raised stigma: “Asian Parents don’t know what’s going on” things were soooo out of control in the household, schools and community. I applaud myself for getting through it all. It could have been so much worse and was necessary for how it ended up playing out for my family. Education can come later. Adjusting to a civilised society and lifestyle FIRST took some 1st generation ethnic wtf moments.
A Turkish friend recommend this movie to me years ago but never got arround to watching it, as faith has it me and this movie cross paths again. I am gonna watch it this time. It looks incredible.
