Today, April 24, is the 96th anniversary of the birth of Jerzy Tchórzewski, an outstanding painter, graphic artist and teacher. On this occasion, we would like to draw your attention to the work "Figure" (1963) by this artist available in our gallery. Tchórzewski (1928-1999) was a underground Home Army soldier during World War II. He studied painting right after the war at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. During his studies, he became involved with the Krakow Group, and in 1957 he was one of the founding members of the so-called II Krakow Group. From 1959, he also collaborated with the international PHASES movement, which groups surrealist artists. He made his debut at the 1st Exhibition of Modern Art in Krakow (1948/49). After graduation, he moved to Warsaw, where in 1954 he started teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts. He ran a painting studio at the Faculty of Graphics. Already from his early, figurative period of work (1948-55), when he placed human silhouettes and fantastic, "antediluvian" creatures in imaginary landscapes, he was characterized by a type of imagination close to surrealism. After 1955, he began to paint abstract visions of cosmic cataclysms, volcanic eruptions, and shining and disappearing stars. Their darkness was torn by jagged lines of lightning, flowing lava and electric discharges ("The Forming Landscape", 1956-57). Sometimes human and animal shapes appeared in the compositions, bringing to mind myths about the creation of the world, titans, Prometheus, etc. ("First Steps", 1958; "Survived", 1959), the work we are presenting belongs to this circle. The artist further complicated the texture of the paintings, using, among others, properties of uneven drying of paint layers, and in the case of gouache - effects of crumpled paper. In parallel with painting, he created monotypes from the end of the 1940s, and in the 1960s also linocuts on hand-painted paper. From the end of the 1970s and throughout the 1980s, Tchórzewski eagerly took up religious topics when he became involved with the independent artistic movement.
