The Strypes are 4-piece rhythm and blues band hailing from Cavan, Ireland, formed in 2011 by Ross Farrelly (lead vocals/harmonica), Josh McClorey (lead guitar/vocals), Pete O'Hanlon (bass guitar/harmonica) and Evan Walsh (drums).
The group has spent the past 18 months launching their explosive R&B assault on the clubs and festivals of Ireland, the UK and Europe, viciously hammering out a no-nonsense blues repertoire drawing from the songbooks of Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Slim Harpo and more with the passion and venom of British blues groups such as Dr. Feelgood, The Yardbirds, The Rolling Stones and The Animals.
Having already been met with critical acclaim from greats such as Jeff Beck and Paul Weller and been tipped by NME as the No. 1 new band to watch, it seems things can only get better for The Strypes.
This will sound mean spirited but, this comment is praise for their determination. Due to that factor; they deserve the success they have, but, judging form this song ( and they got more and better and they did a good job.) I a have seen as good as and better amateur covers of this classic, which proves that luck and determination ( sacrifices like sleeping on the streets and who knows what else!) Are key factors ( oh yeah! You better have balls! Like these guys) Just an old fart sharing an unsolicited opinion. And if you are probed to instruct," die, already, Geezer" your wish is my command. Soon enough. Soon enough!
Hey look! No backing track, not a bunch of irrelevant dancers and the singer didn't grab his privates once. They can play, how about that youth of world?!
The band sounds good but the vocals aren’t very strong. They sound like boys whereas this song requires the pathos and passion of a full grown man. The wah on the solo is incongruous with the style of the song, shouldn’t have used it. I dig the drummer and the organ player the most. Polished and professional recording but they are trying to hide the weak vocals by double tracking them. The singers have decent pitch but need to have a more powerful delivery and be more expressive. Singing like Blink 182 on this kind of material doesn’t cut it. I’m sure they’ll improve, they have a good foundation.
Al the young dudes carry a tune ( Mott the Hoople,if youve never heard of them LOOK them up Ian Hunter and the Fella's) good energy Lad's very good performance. I've always Liked and Loved this tune. Peace Love and damn good music. keep rocking!!
Josh McClorey (the guitarist) also has a solo career. I like his songs but they are very different from his work with the Strypes. If you want something similar to the Strypes, check out the Zen Arcade
