Thank you for this great insight on Pele, which remains to this day the most mysterious and impressive album to me ! I guess though that comparing Björk, PJ and Tori is not the point here. Let's rather imagine how inspirational they must have been to one another. As to what you said about Alanis, which I think was quite offensive, I just wanna say that Alanis and Tori toured together in 99, and Alanis's Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie is as fabulous and enigmatic and sophisticated and complex work of art as Pele is !

Wow, there's so much in this episode! Never thought I'd hear Susan Sontag or Pauline Kael mentioned in relation to Tori's artistry :) I agree there probably wouldn't be a BFP made today but I think Ethel Cain's 'Preacher's Daughter' actually comes really close. As far as unusual enunciations that T is uniquely embraced for (because no one else really does it, as you allude to) - I'd say Joanna Newsom is beloved by her fans for doing the same! On BFP songs proper... MM: "Doughnut Song is the silent killer of the album" - hard agree! Oddly the song that took the longest for me to appreciate was Putting the Damage On, because it didn't seem to 'go anywhere' melodically for me...but I have a deep appreciation for it now. When I became a fan of T in the mid-00s I immediately thought BFP was one that really stood out - and probably because I learned classical piano from young I was ecstatic about the harpsichord on it, which sounded so 'rock', like Scarlatti, and not as 'demure' as say, Gluck. I'm possibly in the minority here but I prefer the original Hey Jupiter to Dakota. Alamo as KK's playlist opener is ace - I also think the noodly bassline on it by George Porter Jr. works as an example of polyphony given BFP's 'Baroque' themes, if that makes sense. Congrats on a fab first season; really been enjoying this series!

I (Kristen) also prefer the album Jupiter if one is making me choose. I was soooo surprised to hear Matt say to me that he preferred Dakota! The first few notes and the starkness of the piano mimicking an unanswered phone call are haunting! I think about it every time I hear studio HJ

Boys for Pele was indeed.. an interesting first listen for me! It was also right when I first got into her. This album stood out to me the most, and I had to check it out. I will never forget the first time I heard Blood Roses and Professional Widow.. I was gagged. It was the first time I ever heard anything like it. It was different. It was wild. It was so emotionally freeing. I also remember meeting someone who told me that they could only listen to the album while drunk or really high. I listened to the entire album sober and got it on the first listen. Maybe it speaks to how crazy I am? Maybe it’s just because these are real emotions that we hide deep down inside to be socially accepted. Also I definitely would have to agree with the Tori hate train being tied to misogyny. You can talk about things as a woman, but as long as you dress it up and make it easily digestible. Kristen, I loved that you brought up all the men during this time. It’s been like this since the beginning of time. Men have always had a lot more creative freedom and acceptance.. It’s the double standards of it all! Yuck!

I think there's something really exciting about commercial art being able to explore what's usually hidden from plain sight. I don't think it speaks to how crazy [we] are, tbh I think it speaks to the depth of the human experience and the magic of that. Like I'm not into metal but I'm always fascinated by friends who are die hard metal fans cuz by day they're working high profile corporate jobs and by night they have their mesh shirts on, nipple piercings out, and are rocking out to the absolute hardest shit you've ever heard. I live for it. xox hugs LJ. kk

OMFG I was already worried yall weren’t going to do Boys For Pele and I got the notification and I RAN. I couldn’t agree more with everything yall say, the cathartic nature of bfp and how unnatural feels to listen to it, in the sense that it feels like a privilege to listen to it. To me, BFP was always like a slap in the face, from how raw, rough and immensely intense it is. Also, I’d like to point out that the female holy trinity of 90’s are Tori, Björk and PJ and Tori was always the MOST diminished and put-down one, mainly because she refused to stay in her box; as, for example, PJ was always rock darling, and Björk was the electronic darling, Tori was never only someone’s darling.
@MessingwiththeMasterPodcast
@MessingwiththeMasterPodcast 5 дней назад
Very good point on Bjork and PJ staying in their respective boxes, and Tori cannot be put into any one genre. As Matthew says in the show notes "categorization is futile," and that's true of Tori's entire career, not just this album. And that's not to diminish the work of PJ or Bjork (who we all love, as well) either, but welllll good luck trying to expect something specific from TA. She's an entire universe, she holds more complexities as a writer, musician, and performer than we'll ever understand. kk

Love you guys and the concept of your show! I will never forget hearing Tori for the first time-it was when Winter was released as a single and it embedded something in me I could not let go. When I bought and heard all of Little Earthquakes, I felt like Tori took my soul and burned it to an album. I was more than consumed, more than moved. It brought me somewhere I couldn’t understand much less explain. Btw, “I Can’t See New York” wasn’t written about 9/11. She had already written it before the attacks.

This has been my "messing" for several years... Not at all drastic, just a mild variation of the original tracklist... the only short song I kept was Programmable Soda... I like the rest, I just feel like dropping them makes the album feel less bloated... dropped Mr Bad Man and Posse Bonus but added My Posse Can Do because it needed another playful moment and I do really like it. Also added Not David Bowie, which to me fits seamlessly on Posse (I tried once to find a spot for it on The Beekeeper but it was like trying to force a square peg in a round hole). Honestly, I could have also dropped Secret Spell, Digital Ghost and Dark Side of the Sun and not missed them all that much lol but alas they're there ☺ Actually, I devised the playlist so that I could cut them on any particular day and it would still flow nicely. In fact, I love Dragon as a closer. Anyway, I find this playlist way more listenable, for me personally. I only really liked about half the album when it came out... never really warmed to the tracks I cut, but now I like SS/DG/DotS and adore the rest. Big Wheel and Bouncing off Clouds are certified classics... up there with Fairytale and Cornflake Girl as far as mainstream radio appeal goes. And I have such fond memories of this era, and it was the first band tour we ever got here in Australia and I was blown away by the sound. For this reason, the Legs and Boots, though I still appreciate them (and downloaded them all as soon as they dropped) but they are mixed SO DRY... They don't come close to capturing the incredible energy of a Tori Amos band show. Still Orbiting sounds great, Legs and Boots...sorry, no bueno 😔 Anyway, my messing: 1. Body and Soul 2. Big Wheel 3. Bouncing Off Clouds 4. Roosterspur Bridge 5. Beauty of Speed 6. Smokey Joe 7. Teenage Hustling 8. Digital Ghost 9. You Can Bring Your Dog 10. Girl Disappearing 11. Secret Spell 12. Almost Rosey 13. My Posse Can Do 14. Father's Son 15. Not David Bowie 16. Programmable Soda 17. Code Red 18. Dragon 19. Dark Side of the Sun

When I listen to Giant's Rolling pin, the imagery came in pretty strong to me. I am a visual person, I can see the Imagery of the soundscape she is creating in this song. A very 70s cartoon imagery of giants stomping in to the town, the very pastel colour, women baking pies, the smoke came out of the house, Because English is not my first language, the lyrics doesn't come in first, but the melody and the soundscape came in first. And I really enjoy this song very much. But I believe if Tori play this live, you might change of heart. Songs like Not Dying Today, I didn't get along with her, but after seeing she's playing that song live, I can have a nice tea time when listen to AATS.

Ok, I promised this 3 weeks ago, I'm so bad lol. But here is the playlist I listened to a lot during the NOH era. I basically cut all the songs that featured Tash (not that I don't LOVE them, Ok?!) plus Your Ghost, and included other songs from throughout her career. Also, I had gotten my hands on an incredible quality bootleg of the Helsinki show early in the tour and included a handful of performances from that stunning show. I named the playlist Shattering Sea, and it's still in my mp3 library all these years later ☺ 1. Shattering Sea 2. Pandora's Aquarium (I searched high and low for a HQ solo version, but alas...) 3. Suede (Live w/quartet) 4. Battle of Trees 5. Fearlessness 6. Graveyard 7. Cooling 8. Star Whisperer 9. Cruel (Live w/quartet) 10. Not the Red Baron 11. Nautical Twilight 12. Baker Baker (w/string intro, "A Piano") 13. Snowcherries From France (Live, solo) 14. Edge of the Moon 15. Merman 16. Seven Sisters 17. Carry (Live w/quartet) I replaced Snowcherries with the Gold Dust version when that album came out. If anyone would like to recreate this playlist, just post a reply with your email address and I'd be happy to share mp3s of the live tracks. They really are special, and sound so good, you forget you're listening to a bootleg! And I'm super picky with audio quality, if they didn't sound great they would not be in my personal collection.

I love this channel. I thought I was a complete Tori nerd, but the three of you take it to a different level, and most often, one of you will say things straight out of my heart, mind and mouth. I’m glad I found this. The Beekeeper to me always felt like two different albums forced to live together. I’ve come to appreciate the album as a whole, it’s has some of my favorite Tori songs on it. I just wanted to share my thoughts on Rices’ involvement on Power of Orange Nickers, the song has always reminded me of the film Closer with Julia Robert’s, Natalie Portman, Clive Owens & 😮 1:00:37 Jude Law- which for me is essentially a film about f’ed up people in complicated relationships, mostly how easily boundaries are crossed and the damage of betrayal is hardly ever considered. Damian Rice, being on the soundtrack, has a track played during a key moment in the film. IMO PoOK could easily have been on the films soundtrack. Also, I felt Tori’s aesthetics during this era was absolutely stunning, feminine and one of her best. A side note, I love Welcome to the Dollhouse, I use the “cold diarrhea” bit quite often. (I swear I’m not a12 year old boy). Oh yeah, I also relate this album to the DaVinci Code for some odd reason. Enough rambling, thank you lady and gents for creating this channel. ❤

Love you guys! I think it's OK for Zero Point to be on Kirsten's ADP since it was a central song on A Piano: The Collection, which was leading into ADP's release. Tori was so busy around that time on a lot of projects and it's possible Zero Point's energy rubbed off on the newer ADP songs.

My least favourite Tori album, but I enjoyed listening to this discussion, particularly the contextual stuff about where she was in her career at the time the album was written/recorded. When it was released I think I tuned out a lot of that and didn't pay much attention to her interviews because I was so baffled and disappointed, and most of the songs just did not appeal or make me feel anything other than 'who the hell is this and where is Tori?' Understanding the context helps explain that a bit more, and the whole discussion / reorganising the tracklist did inspire me to go back and listen for the first time in a few years. Interesting that this was originally supposed to be just an EP accompanying a live release of the ADP tour, I don't know whether I missed that information at the time or just forgot, but in fact that's what I ended up doing with this album - just making an EP of the tracks I did like and forgetting the rest. So my version of this album is extremely cut down, but I played it again after listening to the podcast, and I'd forgotten how much I liked it: Flavour Abnormally Attracted To Sin Ophelia Give Welcome to England Starling Curtain Call There's an emotional/spiritual narrative there that resonates with me, and I'm glad to have that, so thank you for the discussion. 🙂

It’s so interesting to hear Kristen say she feels that for her, TBK lives in that time. Total opposite for me. I loathed the album when it came out. But back then, I was a frustrated and angry closeted teenager and I did not want songs about bees and butterflies and my little pony!! But as an adult, now, I relate to this album a lot more than I do others. It’s such a mature record. It’s clear that this is the same person who wrote Pele and Choirgirl only now she has a mortgage and a family. She can’t just let herself be nuts like she used to, she just can’t - people are depending on her to keep it together. So TBK is for me the sonic representation of gojng “this is fine, I am absolutely fine” when really you’re not, but you have to just be fine because the consequences of not being fine are far worse. Also interesting that Kristen kept most of the songs I’ve kicked off - Ireland, Hoochie Woman, Witness and Goodbye Pisces are all gone off my playlist

My opinions at the time differed from most. The much maligned Rolling Stone article actually got me to listen to FTCH. I am a heretic, I do not get into her solo shows, and I've never felt the personal connection with her lyrics that many do. When she talked about forming a band and the importance of the right drummer I was ready to give her another try after not getting into Boys For Pele. I went to my first Tori show because she got a band. To me that made a huge difference in her music, plus showed her incredible talent as an arranger. Those songs I didn't get on Under The Pink and Boys For Pele became brilliant live. As so many fans feel a very personal connection to her, it seems inevitable that the importance of Matt Chamberlain to her music is overlooked. Her music has always been about drama, and Chamberlains signature delayed beats were a perfect match for her delivery. To me the period (1998-2009) when she was playing regularly with Chamberlain and the excellent Jon Evans is the highlight of her career.

The thing about Tori Amos - She’s a very complex artist to follow if you haven’t be exposed to artists who are similar - like Kate Bush or Patti Smith for example. Also if you don’t understand literature to a certain extent, and the ways an artist can tell a story.. That can make it quite frustrating for the listener. So instead of some giving her a chance.. They say she’s “crazy” and they belittle her art all because they simply don’t understand it. It seems to be a common thing we see in society overall. At least that’s what I’ve observed and seen. The three of you are the only ones that listen to Tori Amos that I follow and discuss with. I’ve tried to put some people onto her, but it’s a journey you have to take on yourself. I had to take it on myself when I gave her a chance, and I’m so glad I did. She opened up another world of music & storytelling that I didn’t think was possible - That was until I listened to Kate Bush & Patti Smith for the first time (not saying they’re the same, there’s just connections and similarities).. I still think people have yet to give Tori Amos a proper chance, but I know the day will come when more people catch onto her. She’s an artist to the fullest. Everything she does and everything she’s put out has been well thought out and well intentioned. She’s been devoted to her craft, and that often means having quite a few less fans. Just because you have less fans doesn’t mean your discography isn’t incredible. Tori’s discography is whole conversation in itself and how brilliant and diverse it all is. I love watching y’all talk, and it always feels so nice listening to y’all and escaping for an hour to listen to you 3 talk about my favorite music. I know this is such a long comment - I’m extra AF lol. I can’t wait for the next two. I would be lying if I said I am not on the edge of my seat for Boys For Pele. I found it a chore to stay interested, and I wish I liked more from this record. Mind you, I have listened to all the albums in order. I actually have completed all of them and listened a few times to each. This album seems to be one of my least favorite Tori albums out of them all, but one that I still see as very necessary in her catalogue. I like to think of it as her transitional record - as I feel some of the production leads perfectly into Native Invader. My overall thoughts on ADP : this was actually such a fun Tori album to listen to and was sooooooo camp! it’s a good blend of pop, rock, & country. I liked a good chunk of the record - Bouncing off Clouds was such a fun song & perhaps a Tori fav within her discography. Smokey Joe is so moody and really just has so much darkness to it which I love. Big Wheel is so fun & the countdown is iconic. All of that being said, the album isn’t my favorite Tori album by any means, but it is very necessary. I’ve seen so many talk badly about this record, and I honestly didn’t see what’s so bad about it. There’s a handful of songs that will be making it on a playlist or two. ❤️

When I first listened to this record, I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did! I honestly think it was long awaited since Scarlet’s Walk (being her last amazing album to me - i still have yet to listen to the albums following this one). Of course, I wouldn’t call this album a 10/10 but I was really impressed by the overall production! It all sounds so fresh. It reminded me of Choir Girl’s older sister, but also had hints of ADP. For a debut album, this was setting the bar so so high! I make conceptual playlists on my Spotify where I take each album, and I curate a playlist centered around each album. When I was carefully selecting the songs that would fit, I was very particular on how I wanted to keep it female centered. I also keep each playlist centered around when that album was released, so that it feels very reminiscent of that time. It was very challenging to find many women in the alternative music space during that time. It was very male dominated. Tori definitely came roaring, and she had a successful run of album in the 90’s. This album truly embodies what it feels like to grow up and go through your 20’s as a woman. It covers all of the bases, and I will never forget the first time I heard Silent All These Years. I wasn’t ready for what was in store, and I definitely cried “1000 oceans” listening to this record. Just finished To Venus and Back… Listened to it twice back to back. Everything you guys have said is so spot on. Joey, you were so right about the songs being so similar to Cruel. The minute Juarez came on.. The production instantly felt familiar, yet also so experimental. That’s the perfect way to describe this record. It has the same amount of darkness that’s on From The Choir Girl, but the production is the most experimental I’ve heard Tori get! Kristen, I loved what you did with your playlist. I also agree with your comment about the album being such an experience with a good pair of headphones! I noticed it all throughout the record. From the subtle sound effects in the background, to the almost chopped up sounding reverb in Lust, and on Josephine there’s the piano playing in one ear bud and the drums in the other. For a 1999 album, this production is very fresh and ahead of the curb. I must say the piano work on Lust is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard. It slightly reminded me of the song, Clocks, that would be released by Coldplay in 2002. Also Datura???? That song is insane. They all were so good! Just things I’ve noticed, and I was cracking up at the beginning when y’all were giving Kristen shit! 😂 Y’all are the best.

I have my full complete thoughts on From the Choir Girl. The album feels so insanely personal, especially after diving into the lyrics & analyzing for myself what the songs are expressing. There were many times where I felt like I was reading her diary. The lovely thing about Tori is how she can write songs that are so specific to what she’s going through, but can be interpreted in many different ways. Her music can be very versatile, and that’s what is so special about her songwriting style. This album overall expresses the emotions & thoughts that we tuck deep inside. It’s the hard emotions you want to run away from, but instead of running.. she’s searching for answers. She’s “diving” in - reference to Liquid Diamonds & Pandora’s Aquarium. This album is also incredibly feminine - which I loveeeee. It’s also an album that requires your full attention. From the lyrics to the production to the way she’s singing the lyrics, It all plays a role in the storytelling. That’s true for Tori as whole, and I can’t wait to see how that will reflect on the many other albums I have to conquer. I remember when I first listened to this record and how epic it felt. I remember late last year when I was first discovering Tori, and I was searching through her expansive discography. I was pondering on where to start. I stumbled upon this record, and I pressed play. It was one of the darkest times in my life, and her music really was cracking me open. Jackie’s Strength played, and I remember feeling emotions I never knew I could feel. I still can’t describe what that song does for me. All I know is.. That’s what turned me away from Tori, until I started to revisit her again early this year. It was all about timing because now.. I am in the space where I am no longer running from those feelings and emotions that come up. I embrace them. As we all should. Our emotions are beautiful & demand to be felt. Matt had mentioned in one of these videos how he wasn’t ready for Tori when he had first heard her, and it didn’t all click until later on. That’s quite literally my experience with Tori. Tori makes you sit with those feelings and emotions you didn’t know you had and confront them. Her music is more than just music. It’s so special. I will admit the lyrics went over my head during the first listen, but once I pieced it all together.. My love for the album grew substantially. I think the way you guys describe the songs is so perfect. I loved hearing your stories, and where you guys were at when the album was released. It brought back so much nostalgia for times that felt just a little more simple. I’m on To Venus and Back now, and I can’t wait to see your guys’ input. 💗🎧

One last thing! I know… I’m annoying AF for this, but I must suggest one thing. Once you complete all of the record commentaries by Tori, I came up with a concept you guys could consider. Even if it’s in your own time. You can do it by albums or just take a set of songs by Tori that are your absolute favorite tracks and tie it to why it connects with you and what’s a personal life experience / feeling that’s tied to the song. Obviously not every song we listen to is going to have that personal connection. I did this with each track on Scarlet’s Walk because the album connects to my life in a lot of ways. It’s taken the course of listening to an album to greater heights. It’s inspired me to dig deeper. Whether it be digging deeper when it comes to my spiritual journey or researching more about my ancestry & the land we occupy. Scarlet’s Walk is, like Matt said, a coming of age story. You guys perfectly described it, as always. I just had to be annoying and share this idea. I adore you guys! 🤍

okay, I think To Mazur and Back is a great take on this record! Including 'Sugar' is a bit like how Joni Mitchell included 'Jericho' from her 'Miles of Aisles' live album onto the following release (Don Juan's Reckless Daughter). I'd also include Siren on my Venus playlist; I think it fits :) There are some versions of TVAB that are tagged as '2008 Remaster', so it does seem the album got a facelift at some point!

OK Rhys, you're totally right. I just went down a google rabbit hole and found a version on TVAB on Spotify that is tagged 2008 remaster. I DO NOT remember this. But I'm going to listen today and see if it sounds different. Crazy! (kk)
